Help How to fix Froyo or Gingerbread (or any rom update)

And still you lost prefs???

Checkout this link to Sprite Mobile - Android Backup - SMS, Bookmarks, System Settings, Application Settings, Call Logs, MMS, Contacts, Photos, Video, Music and much more...

If MyBackup Pro failed to do the right job for you where Sprite would have, I'm going to pull it from the recommended procedures, depending upon other feedback.

It was my clear understanding that MyBackup Pro would have protected you from losing that stuff.

PS - Go quadruplicate - ensure stuff gets to your PC. ;)

Hey EarlyMon, first lets NOT JUMP TO PULLING MyBackup Pro as a suggestion based upon my VERY LIMITED experience using it. Let's get some other opinions on MyBackup Pro first...anyone have comments?? Look above at my (scudder's) comment in this thread where MyBackup Pro did NOT save settings of apps like Jorte or K-9 Mail or ChompSMS. It saved the SMS MESSAGES but not the color and text size and prefs settings.

That being said, I looked at the Sprite Mobile link and the FAQs at their website. MY belief is that Sprite would NOT have helped me the way I needed. The Sprite site lists "3rd party applications" where settings WILL be saved and they include a VERY limited set of apps;

Currently we support the following application settings.

  • HTC Twitter
  • HTC Footprints (including photo and audio)
  • HTC Plurks
  • aTrackDog
  • StreamFurious
  • aHome
  • Note Everything

So, it appears, from this information and thread here (and other threads I have have read) that you CANNOT save settings/prefs of 3rd party apps that I had issues with UNLESS you root the phone and use something like Titanium Backup.

Can someone CONFIRM MY FINDINGS PLEASE??

THANKS!!

Also of note:

To anyone that decides to use sprite, keep in mind that since your going from one rom to another that your settings will not stick. Meaning if you have a ringtone set it will not keep it setup that way. This is because sprite is really for situations where you have to hard reset because of a problem program or personal reasons.

What it is good for in this situation is saving bookmarks, calendar entries, contacts, music, photos, video files, call logs, text messages, mms, and things like that. Just a FYI

Ok...so I did some searching for everyone and found some information about Sprite vs. MyBackup Pro. Here are the various links (to specific comments...you can, from there, read the rest of the threads)

Commenting about "better compressed archives" with MyBackup Pro: http://androidforums.com/android-applications/41045-mybackup-sprite.html#post312180

A SPRITE employee/developer commenting about their capabilities (albeit from October 2009, and might be updated since then): http://androidforums.com/android-applications/11640-backup-program-faceoff.html#post66328

There are other threads you can search for (search the forums here or google.com for "mybackup pro vs sprite backup") but some I found were OLD.

One PERSONAL comment I have is with regard to the online backup option. BOTH have online or "cloud" backup options as well as backing up to SD card, however, MyBackup Pro's FREE online backup is CAPPED at 50MB. I had 74MB in my 90+ application backup last night so I HAD TO back up to SD card since I didn't want to pay There is an option to PURCHASE extra space for MyBackup Pro online...250MB for $1/PER MONTH and $2/PER MONTH for 1GB of space. These prices are RECURRING obviously :-/

Sprite has the option to backup to your DROPBOX "cloud" account for FREE which is very interesting!!

I want to do a side-by-side comparison of WHAT EXACTLY EACH APP DOES to compare each and every item they back up. I will post when/if I find info...

I want to do a side-by-side comparison of WHAT EXACTLY EACH APP DOES to compare each and every item they back up. I will post when/if I find info...

Ok, here is what I found from the FOLLOWING sites:

Sprite: Sprite Mobile - Android Backup - SMS, Bookmarks, System Settings, Application Settings, Call Logs, MMS, Contacts, Photos, Video, Music and much more...

MyBackup Pro (RerWare): RerWare Android&#8482 Products: MyBackup Pro (backup Android, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, G1, Hero, MyTouch, etc...), MyBookmarks (Userguide and FAQ)

The ISSUE with backing up 3rd party apps appears to be SECURITY SETTINGS with the Android OS which "protects" apps from "offering" their settings information to just anyone who wants it. This finding MAKES SENSE considering that only ROOTED phones, with the use of Titanium Backup, allows prefs and settings of 3rd Party apps to be backed up and reinstalled.

That being said, both MyBackup Pro and Sprite invite 3rd party developers to "integrate" and allow their settings to be saved and backed up with the respective company's software. At the moment, the most recent information (from the links above) suggests that MyBackup Pro has MORE 3RD APPS integrated into their backup than Sprite.

Here are Sprites 3rd Party App List from their website:

Currently we support the following application settings.

* HTC Twitter
* HTC Footprints (including photo and audio)
* HTC Plurks
* aTrackDog
* StreamFurious
* aHome
* Note Everything

Here are MyBackup Pro's 3rd Party App list from their website:

aHome
AK Notepad
Apps Organizer
aTrackDog
Car Locator
Car Locator TRIAL
EboBirthday
GDocs
Meridian Player Noble
Missed Call for Android 2.0
More Icons Free Widget
More Icons Widget
Note Everything
Note Everything Pro
OI NotePad
OI Safe
OI Shopping list
Version 1.15 - RerWare, LLC - 6
RerWare, LLC 00538
Power Manager
Power Manager Pro
Quick Profiles
Smart Keyboard PRO
StreamFurious
StreamFurious Pro

BOTH sites indicate "more on the way with subsequent builds" but integration seems SLOW when considering the THOUSANDS OF APPS that are available for backup.

Beside that, when contemplating which backup to use, one would also consider the System Settings and other items such as Dictionary, Alarms, Music Playlists, Calendar settings, etc. I have NOT HAD A CHANCE to do a "side by side" summary ("...this app DOES back up this but this one does NOT") but here is the relevant information for you all to peruse. Perhaps you will see one difference between the two apps which makes your decision.

Also note in my previous comment that MyBackup Pro "cloud" online account backup is LIMITED to 50MB with a PER MONTH COST for 250MB or 1GB options. Sprite allows you to backup to your free DROPBOX account (and another free cloud account that I forget) for FREE. And BOTH allow you to backup to your SD card.

Here are the "system settings" and other non-app back summaries for the two apps:

SPRITE SYSTEM AND OTHER NON-APP SETTINGS:

* HTC Home Screens (Scenes)
* HTC Stocks widget settings
* Wallpaper
* Home screen icons and widgets locations
* Ringer Volume
* Ringtone sound selection
* Ringer Mode
* Notification Volume
* Notification sound selection
* Notification to use ring volume setting
* Music Volume
* Call Volume
* User Dictionaries
* Airplane Mode
* Alarms (HTC Magic and greater only)
* Time Format
* Use network to set time
* Date Format
* Bluetooth Discoverability
* Lock Pattern (enabled, tactile feedback, pattern visible)
* Use accelerometer rotation for screen changing orientation
* Screen Timeout
* Screen Brightness
* Stay on while plugged in
* Static IP settings for Wifi
* APN settings

MYBACKUP PRO SYSTEM AND OTHER NON-APP SETTINGS:

3.1 Contacts
All contact information (name, number, icon, organizations, notes, emails, etc

I appoligize if i am repeating anything...i was on a seperate thread after the offical 2.2 release.
I had Unrooted(Unrevoked3), had the OTA update (best buy did it for me), backed up throught titanium/busy box...and then added the new 2.2. I can not flash/recover anything.....It can't find busy box or says' i need to update....titanium wont work....realized my new driver was missing...reinstalled that.....but I CON NOT get to recovery....Someone said I have to wait until someone comes up with a root for 2.2...and that i am stuck for now. The big problem, besides not being able to get to recoverey mode...is the flash websites as mentioned above, so i wanted to see if anyone here knew of anything to help...and should i do the factory setting....I understand I will loose everything, contact are backed up....but I would reather start OVER, then wait....any advice would be great!!!!

Oooh - I think you're stuck for the time being on root and your Titanium use. :( Major bummer - the 2.2 ota was also available as a rooted version, for those already rooted and able to load custom roms.

Your options to get as close as possible are to study scudder's comparisons, choose between MyBackup Pro vs. Sprite for 5 smackers, and couple whichever with ASTRO File Manager.

Or - at least get your apps with ASTRO and your contacts via google and then re-do your settings and setup by hand.

The procedures in the 1st post will get you there.

Keep us all posted.

EarlyMon,

Thanks for the write up. I followed everything you said but my problem is not fixed.

Primary account (personal) works just fine. The secondary gmail account (work) does not sync automatically. Both accounts are gmail.com accounts not apps. Gmail push was working just perfectly till last night on android 2.1. The sync on secondary gmail stopped working after I upgraded it to 2.2 last night. Infact I didnt even notice the problem till I missed my meeting this morning becase the email never arrived on the phone.

Earlier the gmail push was working *without* talk.. with ATK installed and autokilling apps... Now with 2.2 I have no autokiller.. I also tried factory reset and tried it without installing any apps and the problem still existed... I cant believe more people are not plauged with this problem...

Here is a summary from what I have read about this issue so far.

1) This is not isolated to HTC EVO
2) The secondary gmail not syncing seems to be a froyo problem (there are a few threads about this for android 2.1 but they refer to all gmail not syncing. Froyo does not have the option for "gmail storage" to clear data)
3) Factory reset does not help
4) Adding and removing accounts does not help
5) Same problem with any secondary account I add
6) Its not related to a particular gmail account because they dont work the other EVO as the secondary email either.

I currently have a workaround. I have forwarded my secondary gmail to [mysprintnumber]@messaging.sprintpcs.com

that way I receive an SMS when email arrives in my gmail and then I manually sync in the gmail app. Works for now, but I dont want this to be a permanent solution. This is android... the least Google could do is make gmail (and its other services) work on this perfectly.

Someone at Google, HTC or Sprint please take notice..

Device: HTC EVO
Carrier: Sprint
Country: US
OS: Android 2.2 (/w HTC Sense) - Official froyo update from sprint

Personally, I don't use the gmail account application. I have disabled sync. I have about 5 email accounts, two of which are gmail configured with the stock email application. They're all syncing as expected and it's nice to have all email in one place i.e. Hotmail, yahoo, gmail etc. Give it a try.

I have been reading through a lot of this, and I am willing to try OP method, but only if I have to. What problems exactly are we talking about that this fixes? I got my phone yesterday and dloaded/installed the official froyo update. The only true problem I have had is with battery life. However, i really haven't downloaded many apps at all, and i haven't had the phone long. Will doing the things OP suggest actually help? (battery life especially)

Yes, it helps and it helps a lot.

Some of us now believe that most of the advice in the battery-tips thread are really summed up with this procedure.

The bottom line is that poor battery performance is a sure-fire sign that something's out of whack with your phone.

The OP is the first required step - for many people, that's all it takes.

To the last one of us, we all started out with a new EVO that just needed some battery tweaking....

Believe me - we've been in your shoes, have seen it all and done it all.

Collectively, we know this works.

That said - sometimes getting set up correctly can be confusing.

Pay close attention to the stuff mentioned in the browser and et cetera sections.

And watch out for the new Facebook revision - everyone's reporting issues with that.

OMG, I have been debating this guy all week. He's suggesting that the HTC Sense functionality of overwriting contact photos with whatever photo used on facebook when linked is expected functionality... then why is there navigation on the phone that expresses and implies I have a choice by selection contact, link, clicking the photo, then four options are presented i.e. phone, facebook, gallery, camera.

Subject: Regarding your message (10USCW32ENA000904)

Dear A Dubb,

Hi, A. Dubb. Thank you for your response. Again, there is no further information that we can provide regarding the issue. If contacts are syncronizing with Facebook, their profile picture will over write any previous pictures used. This will happen each time Facebook syncs to the phone and cannot be changed. Again, this is a function of the sync and is not a bug of any sort. You can try the steps the previously provided to resolve the issue with a contact not syncing but is not guaranteed to fix due to a communication issue with Facebook servers due to security update by Facebook itself. You concerns will be documented for review of future information but there is further assistance we can provide regarding your current issues. If you have other concerns, feel free to contact Technical Support directly at 1-866-44+9-8358, 6 am to 1 am, 7 days a week.

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 10USCW32ENA000904.

Sincerely,

Dayton

JEEEZ! The unmitigated gall!

<cursing> <extreme cursing>

This is the down side of Sense - its brain-dead approach that all social networking is good for you.

Here's a suggestion by another AF member as a workaround:

Here is an idea to make life a little easier, you can edit the names of your facebook contacts (I know it will take forever). But for my "just facebook" contacts, I added Z-Facebook to the name and it stuck all my facebook contacts to the bottom of my address book. I know it is not much, but every little bit helps.

Weak.

To make matters worse - many people are asking for more Facebook control of the Android experience:

Facebook contact info not syncing to Google contacts? | Facebook

Lame.

This however looks like the fix for your problem:

syncmypix - Project Hosting on Google Code

  • 'Skip existing pictures' option to prevent overwriting manually set contact pictures

Please try it and let us know if 1) it works and 2) does it improve your phone's performance?

I've noticed that as well - and also - your first boot after factory reset took a little longer, if you noticed.

Now that everything is clean, you'll notice (if you're running stock or the stock odexed rooted rom) that your subsequent bootups are now MUCH faster than with 2.1.

I suspect that HTC streamlined the entire process and that the factory reset - as proctored by Sprint - might just "fix" some of that streamlining at startup.

I write it off as one of those things. :)

I'll check into this - maybe there's a little something we can do so it drops the Sprint babbling.

I don't know if I mentioned but I downloaded the app "Silent Boot" which shut OFF the startup tone if anyone is interested...

Geez, don't everybody talk at once! :D

I think that's at least decent.

The other day I talked for a couple of hours, did a bit of web browsing and newsreading and some light texting and was still above 60%.

I don't know how our background tasks differ - I do zero social networking for example - so our mileages are going to vary a little.
