Post-Update Awake Problems? Possible HTCMail Client???

I have been one of the many: Awake problems pre-/post-update. In resetting the phone, I would always set up hotmail as an additional email account, but never found the client to work very well. Of course, the awake time would appear fine for a while, but after receiving a hotmail email, I'd notice the awake time would spike. So, I'd reboot, and the phone would permanently stay in 100% awake mode.

I figured I'd experiment; I reset once again yesterday, but did NOT add hotmail as an additional account. The phone ran as expected, with awake time as it should be, quite low %. To press my luck, I rebooted to see if it went into 100% awake mode like every time before, and so far it is not--awake time is in low %.

If you've had the same problem as I, a few control questions, then: 1) Were you adding additional email accounts, thus using the HTC Mail client? 2) Did you notice the awake time running up after receiving an additional-account email? 3) Was the phone running at 100% awake after rebooting? 4) Would you consider resetting and trying NOT adding the additional email account, to see if it works for you, and post your results in reply? If we can narrow this down to the HTC Mail client, maybe we can get them to fix this continuing nagging problem...

And, I know it may not be the mail client ata all, but trial/error is our best asset these days. Obviously, they did not R&D this potentially awesome phone phone properly, and anything we can do to help them out, the better!!!

Thanks all!

P.S. I'm not running any additional apps, gps is on; who knows what will happen with Handcent/Chomp, Locale, etc. running... ;/

We have 2 Heros that we have had since they were released. Since the update one of them started not sleeping and running the battery down fast and making the phone very slow but it only started today. I finally downloaded Task Manager by houmiak so I could see what was using the CPU. The HTC Mail program was showing around 80% so I tried several things with it but couldn't make it stop using so much CPU. I then killed the task and then the phone started sleeping. I don't know why it just started being a problem today.

No matter what I do the HTC mail app still pegs the CPU and does not let the phone sleep. I finally deleted my gmail account from the HTC Mail app and now the phone sleeps and battery usage is great. I haven't tried adding it back yet, I have just been using the Gmail app for now.

So there is a problem with the HTC mail program.

Heimy,

Were you using the HTC Mail for your gmail, or the stock gmail app? Since I've stopped using the HTC Mail client, I've found no problems; keep in mind, I did factory reset the phone, and when it asked if I wanted to add more accounts, I skipped it. I've since re-charged/rebooted, and phone is running MUCH better.

I don't know if it is sequence-oriented or not; maybe you can just delete additional accounts from the HTC Mail client, and that'll stop it... That's why I've been looking for feedback, so maybe we can hone in on this problem! =)

After my last hard reset, I used stock gmail app for my gmail account, and didn't add that account to the HTC Mail app. The phone was sleeping for about a day or two, and was sleeping when I plugged it in to charge last night. When I woke up this morning and checked it, it looked like my phone was sleeping, but I believe it was after I unplugged it, the phone stayed awake again. I feel like it has something to do with the phone charging that is causing it to be awake. Seems to go to 100% after every hard reset I do when I take the phone off the charger.

I deleted my other email accounts from the mail app and its still at 100

A general question for everyone out there: Are any of you who are NOT having battery/awake issues using additional accounts through the HTC Mail client(the one with mailbox on the screen)?

I think I saw someone post somewhere that they weren't having problems with Exchange, but quite obviously we're all running into issues with hotmail/yahoo/etc...

Thanks for replying, Heimy.

I didn't have the 100% problem after my last charge, but that was yesterday, and I have been waiting to see how long it's going to last before I need to charge it. so far, phone's down to 17% awake time, and battery is at 57 %, with almost 26.5 hr since boot, according to Spare Parts.

Are you running any other apps?

I'll probably plug the phone in sometime during this coming night; I'll be sure to post results!

I had four pop3 accounts setup on my hero. Ever since the update, I get about 8-9 hours before the device starts doing its "100% awake" thing (seems to happen overnight while I'm sleeping).

Never had any of the accounts setup to check email auto, had them all manual. Decided to delete all four of them today, and reboot, and right now, I'm at 2% wake time. I had rebooted a few times prior, and it stuck at the 100% mark, so I'm not 100% sure IF removing the email fixed it, or if it was a fluke, but since the update, as far as the 100% wake (not the one due to SMS), I can't make it more than half a day before it starts "not sleeping" and runs the awake time back through the roof.

Hopefully, after removing these email accounts, it will sleep, then the question becomes whats the point of having a device that you can check email on, if you can't have the accounts there in the first place.

I use 7 accounts Gmail, AOL, YAHOO, VERIZON (lol, yeah, VerizOn) I have had no issues with my battery and its performance is slightly better post update. I did read 100% for a day or so but battery still was good. After soft-boot all was good on battery read too.

Just got done recharging; turned phone off and plugged it into the wall. Turned it on, put it on Phone Status screen, and it is indeed sleeping properly.

Recap: I did a factory reset, attached gmail account, but no other additional accounts, thus not using the HTC Mail client. The only other Market App I've got is Spare Parts, so I can monitor exact battery usage.

Boxermansr--nothing better after reset and no addt'l email accounts? Are you running other apps?

Coolone2--awesome that you're not having any battery/awake problems. Question: do you have the HTC Mail client set so you have to manually update your accounts, or is it auto? ItsDon mentioned on another thread that he attached his gmail account to the HTC Mail client so he could read it better, but does a manual update; here's a direct quote from the other thread:

" I don't have the HTC app check for mail at all, ever. I use the Gmail app to notify me and then I hit the HTC app and tell it to refresh. I don't know if that is why I'm not having problems but I'm not, phone sleeps like it's on Adivan."

Not a bad idea, but the shame of it is that we have to work so hard to make this phone work the way it should have straight out of the box. In addition, I can't update the content in my Hotmail account anyway through the phone, so losing it wasn't too painful. Hopefully they'll fix this client in the future.

Thanks for all of the input; keep it coming everyone!!! I'm going to collect as much info as I can, then contact HTC/Sprint and maybe get a ball or two rolling...

I use the mail app for checking my yahoo mail every couple of hours and my awake time is never above 10% but it usually hovers around 8%.

I have hotmail and aol in the htc mail app. i did 3factory resets, all 3 times it was sleeping properly for a while, but then started creeping up again. im getting frustrated. my battery life is ok, i can go 9 hours with moderate use and its only down to about 70%. should i ignore the awake issue? i hope they fix this with 2.0

also was having the issue with not recieving texts. reset seems to have fixed that for now.

I am having a 100% awake. After the MR, I did many hard resets and tests to see what is going on. I get the 100% awake time within 1 to 2 days. After the last hard reset, I didn't install any additional apps from the market. I logged into Gmail and HTC Mail (exchange server 2003). Both were set to push email. I synced mail and calender from Gmail, mail and contacts from my exchange. I am not sure if they are the cause of the problem. I have cleared both Gmail and HTC Mail, soft reset, but I still have the 100% awake time. I am also logged into Facebook. I may do another hard reset and just use Gmail for a few days to see if HTC Mail is causing the problem then vice versa with HTC Mail.

Ok so my new experiment has resulted in 100% Awake time after around 32 hours. I downloaded the Stock RUU, hard reset the phone, and then installed the Stock RUU. When The phone started back up I skipped all the setup and simply waited for the phone to boot and then updated the firmware. The phone then went through the upgrade and restarted. After the restart I Hard reset again and then went through the setup Logging into google (syncing my contacts), Facebook, and Twitter. I then installed some programs in blocks:
1) Facebook, MySpace, Flixter Movies. Ran all the programs and then let it sit for a few hours
2) Google Voice, Last.FM and Pandora. Ran all programs and then let it sit for a few hours
3) Shazam, ShopSavvy, Barcode Scanner and LightningBug. Ran all programs and then let sit for a few hours
At this point my phone had been Up for 13 hours and the awake time was 18% again with moderate use. I went to sleep and plugged it in to charge. At 20 hours my awake time was like 12% so it slept during the night. I went about my day and only used Text messages and a few calls. I did set my alarm but I doubt that did it. Then around 32 hours or so All my contacts went missing. Then the phone started slowing down drastically and the Sync icon was at the top and gradually my contacts started coming back from Google over the next 20 minutes or so. On a hunch I checked my time and then turned it off for 10 minutes and then checked again and the awake time had moved up 10 minutes. I decided to charge and hit the sack and when I woke up my awake time was now at 45% and the phone refuses to go back to sleep.
I wonder a few things: Does this phone have a bug breaks the awake counter at X hours in certain manufactured dates or something?
Does the Google Sync break and then keep the phone awake at all times?
I am frustrated because I like to know answers. ANybody not having the awake issue but using Google for contact sync?

The above apps are the only ones I have installed and I did not set up any Mail accounts this time around.
