Locked and branded are two different things.

Locked refers to a network lock, i.e. you can't put any other network's SIM in there until the lock is removed. This is done on a lot of new phones and it'll cost you around

Very strange !!! My wife and me got each one a Desire (same provider) she got the new OS 2.2 to be downloaded under Settings-About phone- System software updates (which she did and its working perfectly fine). But on mine it just says "Your phone is up to date" but I still have version 2.1 (both phones are not locked) ... mystery ?????

Elwood42: nobody knows the asnwer.. I bought my phone couple days ago, and no OTA available for it. Not branded or sim locked. Mystery!

Same for me, bought mine unbranded online earlier this week, and not getting the update when I search for it.

Irritating!

Not sure about eastern europe I'm afraid.

AFAIK the real way to tell if you are unbranded is to check the software number in about phone. If its 1.21.405.2 then you should be unbranded.

After digging a bit deeper I found out the following.

IMEI is registered to British Board of Telecommunications, so UK handset.
Software version is 1.21.405.2
current firmware version 2.1-update1

When HTC say the update is available to non-branded European handsets, what does that actually mean in relation to European?

Is it based on:
- the IMEI?
- the geo location of the handset
- the ip address of the handset
- the network of the sim card
- the network you are connected to (I connected to Vodafone NZ)
- the software version

As suggested in other posts, and also by HTC support, I've tried setting the date 3 months ahead and rebooting the handset, but the handset keeps automatically setting it back to the correct date before I get a chance to reboot.

If indeed, HTC are rolling out the update in batches to prevent overloading of their servers, it would be nice to know when they estimate the update would be completed, and it would also be good if thay mentioned this on their support page.

Hi, Not sure if anyone can help but I have an unlocked, unbranded phone.
Last Monday when I heard the update had been released I did a manual check and lo and behold I had the option to download the 90Mb. It was not convenient at that time so I cancelled.
Next convenient time to do the update was Wednesday morning but everytime I check now it tells me my phone is already upto date.
I can confirm I am running Firmware 2.1-update1 and Software 1.21.405.2

Any thoughts? :(

i don't know why your phone is showing no update but you can manually update from 1.21.405.2 to FroYo.

try this: Manually install the official Froyo build on HTC Desire | Geekword

it did it this morning. it's simple, it worked for me and now i'm all 102.2% FroYo-ed up (can you see what i did there?)

Manually updated my Desire using the Geekword method yesterday morning. Worked straight away and took about 10 minutes on my unbranded, unlocked Desire on an Orange contract from Carphone warehouse.

I don't think anyone has been offered the OTA update for four or five days now. It's starting to look like HTC might have pulled it.

Personally, I'm not going down the manual install route in case HTC have indeed pulled it and are working on a new release which addresses some of the issues people have been reporting.

Let's hope this is really the case and we will be able to installed a 100% working 2.2 over the buggered one.

So ever since I updated to 2.2 my battery has been rubbish and I think Ive worked out why. I had beebplayer open this morning. Killed it with Advanced task killer but if I go back into task killer a minute later beebplayer is back. Same thing with the radio. I get why things like messaging and email etc reopen themselves as they are constantly updating but theres no reason for beebplayer and radio to be open. Im sure this didnt happen before I updated to 2.2

Right guys for those running the following firmware (1.21.405.2) on a VIRGIN MOBILE (possibly others) issued handset this is how you can get the update now without rooting (this is using a genuine HTC release THIS IS NOT a custom ROM):

1. Purchase a spare SD card. (A 2GB card can be picked up at ASDA or Tesco for around

Does manaully updating it update it with a HTC rom (with sense or the stock android (the one thats on the nexus one)

Also, if it true and htc have stopped sending out the updates and then they start sending them out again will i be able to get it?

thanks

I've still got Sense on my Desire if that's what you are asking.

Not sure what you mean in the second part of your question though. Do you mean that if you manually update to 2.2 using the .zip file on Geekword and HTC send out a new version of 2.2 OTA will you be able to update your old version of 2.2 with the new one?

No idea as to the answer to that but would be interested to know the answer if anyone knows...

Got the update available via OTA right now. Downloading. Going for FroYo, eventought I have some doubts about it..

ps. country: Estonia, not branded, not sim-locked.

Confirmed, I am now being offered the 2.2 OTA update every time I check for it.

Still really wary about doing it though, given how many issues seem to be reported on here.

I bought mine one from UK and now im in Bangladesh. I still got the OTA update nd i'm using froyo right now. If you cannot get OTA you can download the OTA from

http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip

rename the file as update.zip and put it on your SD card. Then shut down the phone. Press nd hold volume down key and press power. Go to recovery. When the screen with red icon appears, press and hold volume up key and then power key. Select update from sdcard. Your phone will be updated.. :). Hope this will work.
