Droid X in one hand, Evo in the other...

...which to choose? I've had them for about a week (gonna return one of them before 30 days...). I'm trying to like the Droid X, I really am. I like the way it feels in my hand, I like the buttons, the display is superior to my untrained eye, battery life is somewhat better than Evo...Overall, I like the way the X feels and, for the most part, the less "glitzy" UI than the Evo. BUT, it "stumbles" frequently in the form of unresponsive "login" screens and home screens. Might this be addressed in 2.2? If the Droid X weren't so "jerky" in the UI, it would be my choice. I've tried the hard reset option.

In (on) the other hand, It feels like I am able to do and get to things quicker on the Evo, and compared to X's UI, I like the dark feel of the Sense UI and widgets. Apps seem more "integrated". I've conditioned the battery (in both) and the Evo is lasting much longer than the first day or two. I've never experienced any "hiccups" in the responsiveness of the UI (running 2.2). I'm nitpicking, but I like the black Notification Bar on the Evo and how it hides when in the browser app. I also like the little notification area on the Evo "login" screen.

But I like the way the X feels

Stock motoblur out of the box loaded up w widgets on 7 screens runs glitchy. Do like someone above said and get adw (i like launcherpro better) and beautifull clock/weather widgets for 1.50 + the 2.99 paypal widget stretcher upgrade it will run alot smoother. Everyone who thinks their htc sense UI is superior is a crack smoker/jealous teeth gritter on the droid x subject. Lovin my X after trying some launcher options. I have the cute 'sense ui' pinch home screens w lp or adw...,x is smooth w eiter for FREE

Dude, I happen to think that the Droid X is a wonderful device. But calling someone (which includes me) a crack smoker and jealous teeth gritter because I happen to think that Sense is a better UI makes you exactly the type of person you claim I am. No need for insults buddy.

Besides, I'm not the only one who feels this way about Sense. Almost every tech reviewer on the net (Engadget, CNet, Gizmoodo and others) all Believe HTC's Sense to be the best OEM Android UI on the market. I have played with the MyTouch, G1, Cliq, Captivate and yes, the Droid X. The Droid X, I believe has the potential to be the best Android device available at this point, but even as the Original Poster pointed out, Sense on the Evo (Just like Sense on the Desire and Incredible) runs as smooth as butter. In Engagdet's final remarks in its review of the HTC Incredible, they were so impressed with the Sense UI, they wondered why Google does not work with HTC on a more formal basis for OS and UI development.

Like I said, I'm sure Motorola will get these issues resolved. Its a new hardware and a new UI, Whereas HTC has been making tweaks to Sense for almost a year now with each new device, from the Droid Eris and Hero to the Incredible and Evo, making it better.

I appreciate the replies!

@ ari-free - that's a great point...my Evo "seemed" to spiff up a bit after the 2.2 update...but may have been the placebo effect...

@CriticalCritic - thx for the reply -
Are you sure that you will be paying the same for both plans? pretty much, decent employer discounts, about a $10 difference between the plans w/taxes & fees, Verizon has a pilot talk plan (their description not mine) they are testing here with unl. mob to mob, 450 "landline" mins, unl. texts...

Are you in a 4G area? Yes with strong signal at home, around town is spotty

Do you use the phone for visual media? Yes, vids & stills of family, students, friends, etc.

Do you have a use for a front facing camera? Will you have a use for one? I want to say yes b/c it's a cool feature, but probably not...

Do you make lots of calls to other mobile phones? Yes, and texts...

@PurePursuit - I'll give that a go...are they in the app store?

I'm activating the Mobile Hotspot service on each one today to see how that works out.

My idea was to use one of them as my primary Internet connection at home (son just moved out so he doesn't need access anymore) and give my cable company the boot.

A friend (that chose his home based on proximity to a 4G tower, no kidding) said heat generation in the Evo & DroidX may be an issue...

1- awesome! That sounds like a pretty sweet deal! Keep in mind that Sprint will also be charging you a $10 monthly '4G' fee for the Evo.

2- if you are seriously planning on kicking your cable and using it as a hotspot, then this is something to keep in mind when making your decision.

3- So do you think that, when considering the built in kickstand, it translates into a very notable increase in convenience? Or do you just consider the Evo kickstand just a novelty?

4- No big deal then... Though you should also consider how long you are planning on keeping this phone.

5- Keep in mind that Sprint has an option for completely unlimited calling to any mobile phone on any network free.

Thx for your reply 3devious,

I'm going through each carrier to activate the services...

just found out from Verizon that their Mobile Hotspot plan has a 2 GB/month limit...but activated it anyway to test it out...

...getting about 100-150 Kbs download from sites like Apple, Avira, Download.com...

...Speedtest.net rated at 1.1 Mbs for downloads...

...DroidX warmer than usual...

On Friday night, I had the evo in one hand and the x in another. I loved the feel and look of the evo. I love sense ui.

The negatives for the evo for me were:

Sprint service. You can't pull down 3g when you're roaming on Verizon's towers.

The X is lighter although a bit longer.

Even with Froyo, the X felt snappier shifting screens and I was using Launcher Pro Plus to boot.

So, for me, it came down to service. Sprint was going to offer me the sun moon and starts to come over from VZW. I told my daughter that I would get her the evo to replace her BB. She said that Sprint had lousy service in Lexington, KY (her college town). That closed the deal.

Bottom line? They're both great phones. So, how's the service.

VZW won for me.

Ok, if you really want to use the phone as a wifi hotspot, the Evo is the way to go. It will cost you an extra $30/month but you get "true" unlimited data. No other company has a plan that gives you true unlimited with no cap. Plus with 4G its a snap.

But if you want overall network coverage and reliability, go with the Verizon phone. Verizon plans are costlier but, you get the bang for your buck, Unlike with AT&T. Sprint's network, while reliable, just isn't up to par with Verizon, though their 4G network is sweet. Today, I got 7.2 Mb/s down in Atlanta. That was a record for me.

Well...things have a way of working out.

I finally ended up with the Epic mostly because of the keyboard. I'm done freakin' over the perfect phone (until the next one comes out of course...LOL).

The Evo and Droid X are awesome devices, but I found out I prefer a keyboard.

THANK YOU to everyone who replied, great community, too bad there's not more of this out there in the world!

I know that this is a stretch but I can only compare my Incredible to the Droidx that I just picked up three weeks ago. My wife wanted to use a smart phone, so I picked up a Dx and let her use my Incredible. While the Dx is a nice phone, the Moto interface is a bit cumbersome to me after using the DInc for several months. It is a bit more usable after adding beautiful widgets, but the whole experience is smoother and faster on the Dinc. I say this because I would expect the Evo to be similar.

The Droidx is going back in a couple of days and I will pick up another Dinc.

I hear that the new Merge is coming out soon if you can wait for that. It is supposed to be a Verizon Evo with some additional features.
