[How-To] Force the Official Android 2.2 Froyo Update for the Motrola Droid (FRG01B | Update 1 of 2)

I d/l and installed android 2.2 (froyo) last night. The installation ran smoothly. The first reboot of the system took about a minute, maybe longer. The first use of the phone with froyo- it was working very well, but became slow and started to lock up on a black screen. I had to take the battery out in order to turn the phone off. Upon restart, the phone has been working fine since then. I believe I was running too many programs in the background (?) and will turn them off when finished with advanced task killer.

Quadrant Standard Benchmark: 799 (slightly slower than the galaxy)

I put off forcing the update (frg01b) hoping that the OTA would show up. finally said what the heck and did it. It worked flawlessly, my Linpack scores went from 4.3XX to 9.6XX. Downloaded the Adobe Flash and it works as well (a little choppy at times but it works). I had no issues with anything missing or changed settings and there is a noticeable difference in speed. I have not had any battery issues at all. I must say I am pleased with the results.

SPRecovery and ClockWork Mod are recoveries not ROM Managers. More specifically, they are alternate recoveries, as in alternate to the one that comes with stock ROMs. The one with the Stock ROM (FRG01B) should work to flash the FRG22 released files, but if they are not doing it, I would not worry about it - I (and other users) was pushed the 'full update' that works regardless of which pre-2.2 OS is on your phone to upgrade you to FRG01B.

This question has been asked before here, but I haven't seen a clear answer, so I'll ask it again: "Is there any way to update to the latest FroYo build (FRG22 or FRG01B-update1) without rooting or flashing?"

Background: I manually updated to FRG01B last Tuesday afternoon (following the steps found here) before Trident posted that Verizon was halting the OTA because of bugs in the build. Now I have a semi-buggy build of FroYo, but do not want to do a factory reset, root, or flash anything onto my phone. Is there an update.zip I can just copy to the SDCard directory of my SD card, boot into recovery mode, and install like I did last Tuesday for FRG01B?

I installed. Yea there are some bugs for sure. My Droid does not run faster, seems to freeze a lot now. Ill swipe the screen to move left of right and the response stinks to say the least.
Is anyone else having issues with the gallery?
My videos that worked perfect on 2.1 now do not work. Some do not play at all. Others show the thumbnail of the video but its looks like a VCR tape being fast forwarded. Is this happening to anyone else. I tried removing them and putting them back on but that does not work. Did they change the format or something?
Any advice?

I did a system wipe/reset to defaults and it seems to be running much better. I was getting the lag-time or frozen home screen when trying to switch and then would have to wait. This has not happened since I did the restore to factory defaults. Follow this link with instructions-

How to hard reset the Motorola DROID - Know Your Cell

I suppose because I had the option set for my settings to be backed up on Google servers, I first noticed apps that I had previously loaded started popping back up in my app tray. I then opened up "Market" and 78 apps were downloading themselves, the same exact apps (paid or not) that I had before doing the wipe. About all I've had to do is re-activate the phone, which you are prompted to do immediately when you restart the phone and re-login to Google (which it prompts you for) and I'm back in business. I had to log-on to Facebook again and other things. My SD card was not affected at all by the factory reset. Even my WiFi network was remembered. I turned on WiFi and I didn't even have to type my password in. I still backed up what I could to my computer before starting. Google Voice voice-mails are still there.

My text message history got wiped (no problem for me). I had to use Astro Manager to install Adobe Flash Player 10.1 again (no problem)- It seems to be working a whole lot smoother now!!!

I followed and completed these steps. There is now a ninja icon named superuser permission in app screen that does nothing. Also it says my Build Number is FRG22 by Pete.

Am I now rooted? I do not want to be...

Yes - are you sure you picked the Odexed and not the Deodexed file?

Go to my post and get that file and use it instead.

In order to use an alternate recovery, you ahve to be roooted, or else do some hokey stuff.

however, if you just want a stock (non-rooted) version of 2.2 you can put it on your SDCard, rename it to update.zip, and then reboot into the stock recovery and use install update.zip to do so - no root required.

Thanks for clearing that part up, but I'm still confused as to which file to use for the update.zip. There are 2 from Peter Alfonso's website that are "Stock System Files" labeled as FRG01B and FRG22 (Odexed and DeOdexed), and there are 2 listed under OTA updates labeled as FRG01B (from ESE81 and Master OTA). Which one should I use?

Thanks again!

Which post number? You have a bunch on this thread and I want to find the right one.

I really appreciate it. I'm dying for some froyo. Can't keep hitting system update and seeing the God awful Your system is currently up to date. Lying ass phone.

I used to instructions for the phone, and it works! The only thing, is it still takes a moment to load the icons on the home screens. Also, pretty much everything is slow, or unresponsive. Almost everything has had to force close so far. I'm hoping another soft reset, or battery pull will help.

After two soft resets, and a battery pull, things are a bit better, but almost all my ringtones, and notification tones are gone. Or at least, not selectable for ringtone, or notification tone...

Ok, after letting my antivirus/spyware run, things are going much faster on my Droid. I received several updates for apps, and some are working better and faster. I got rid of my alternate home app, as the new stock one is great and does not crash or force close for no apparent reason. I was able to install flash, which works great in the stock browser bit not so well in any others. I am glad to free up space by moving some apps to my SD card and wish more could be moved.
I just wish there was wifi tethering, and that the stock browser wasn't so insistent on opening only the mobile version of sites.
Thanks for all the help!

On an unrelated note does anyone know much about dialer storage??

I have seen this question posed, but do not remember seeing an answer. If the manual update is the official, will we receive notification of any updates if we did the manual installation? Great instructions by the way. I have had few problems to speak of that a battery pull early on did not rectify. I would agree that Pandora is lacking in quality now. Also had a problem first time I used the camera that mucked up the entire phone until I did a battery pull. Otherwise seems pretty good. Thanks to anyone who can answer my question on this. Personally I love chrome to phone. Do not like the stock dock and went back to Launcher Pro.

I thought I had this all figured out and now after reading the past couple of pages I am totally confused.

I thought that if we downloaded the DEODEXED version FRG22 we could install it the same way as FRG01B as long as we are not rooted???

I have downloaded the 74.7MB file, but have yet to install...better to wait for a better version?

I'm beginning to think that forcing FRG01B was not a good idea. Anyone that has FRG22 running into issues?

I'm sorry guys, but I am completely at a loss as to what to do. I returned my Droid to the 2.1 update-1 stock image via RSDLite, and I've downloaded the 2.2 file mirrored here more than 4 different times as requested in the original post, and I still get the error that everyone is saying should simply require a redownload of the original file. Unless it requires 5+ downloads to get the 'good' version of the .zip file, then it ain't the file that's the problem.
