I can help you out a bunch, here.
I also came from a Blackberry Storm 2 and I spent two straight days trying to get my Droid X to do the great things that the S2 did so well. I went non-stop downloading, testing, and uninstalling tons of apps to find what works.
Here is what I discovered and what works the best:
1.) Handcent SMS - It is the closest thing to using the Blackberry, allowing you to customize everything. I spent hours tweaking this program and now have it set up to give me custom notifications and LED colors for all of my contacts, just like the Storm. It even allows you to get rid of the childish bubbles and have a list view. You can even customize the colors. The other SMS apps are good, but this one works the best for me.
NOTE - LED color on the Droid X are a little weird. Even though the menus on several apps allow you to customize colors, you are severely limited to the actual colors you can actually use. For instance, you pretty much have to stick to primary colors. Try to set it "pink" and you'll either get "Red" or nothing at all. Orange doesn;t work either.
Through tons of experimentation, these are the colors I've found that are actually available:
Red
Green
Yellow
Blue
Purple
Cyan
Magenta
That's it.
SECOND NOTE - You cannot customize the blinking. "Slow Blink" or "Solid on" are your only options.
2.) Profile - this allows you to set up custom profiles for your sounds/vibrations, just like every Blackberry does. Put the widget on the home screen and with two clicks you can mute everything but the ringer or have any combination of sounds turned on or off.
NOTE - The reason I went with this program is because it allows you to separate the ringer sound from the notification sound. By default, these two sounds are linked together with the same adjustment (volume). It takes a special setting to allow one to have alert sounds muted, but keep the ringer on. Why Motorola did this is a complete mystery to me.
3.) E-MAIL - This has been a frustrating battle for me. I have several email accounts and would like the ability to have a separate alert for each account when mail arrives. I have yet to find anything that does this.
K-9 mail came close, but became a pain to use after trying to compose/linking addresses from different apps. Unless you start your composition from K-9, you're going to have a frustrating battle as well.
In the end, I've simply set up Gmail to do everything and downloaded widgets to notify me of new mail. It has been the easiest and most-streamlined, so far.
If somebody knows of an app that will allow custom notifications and LED colors for more than one account, I'd like to hear about it.
