AT&T "subtlety" punches back

I'd have to say the new ads from AT&T are a stroke of genius.

Verizon: "We have more 3G coverage, a better network, and finally a smartphone that can compete with smartphones on other networks."

AT&T: "We have iPhones, Luke Wilson, and rollover minutes that have zero value and expire at the end of the year! Buy a higher priced plan with more minutes and SAVE!!!"

Smart consumer: "You are paying a carrier for their network coverage... right?"

Stupid consumer: "iPhone and Luke Wilson!!!!! Rollover minutes save money!!! Yay!!!"

Since stupid consumers > smart consumers, AT&T has clearly concocted a winning strategy.

best. post. ever.

couldn't agree with you more...:D

that being said...my parents and I all used to work for verizon prior to them selling their shares in hawaii...only thing left in hawaii is verizon wireless and no more land services...

but reason being that finally apple and at&t are fighting back is they know they suck...AT&T can't compete with verizon at all...did you guys know that every other month verizon puts over $1billion back into their networking to provide service coverage and availability. that's over $6 billion in 1 year...and they do this every other month...Also verizon wasn't willing to bend over backwards and let Apple take 80% of the profits...now that the Droids out and both apple and AT&T have scene what it can do and how much more functional it is compared to the iPhone they have to start throwing jabs to keep up with sales.

let AT&T and Apple take their jabs...that's what losers do...VERIZON EATS EM FOR BREAKFAST...rofl

There are times in which surfing the web while talking is helpful (they gave great examples) but for the most part I don't feel a lack not having that capability. Besides, on a crappy network it doesn't really matter.

I'm sure people might **think** they will be holding an iphone to their ear AND navigating the web at the same time. I mean do you really use speakerphone 100% of the time....

....oh wait, if the iphone doesn't even ring, it's all a moot point :D

Like said above, I'll take much faster data speeds over those ads anyday. You know that Apple is on a downhill run when they have to vehemently defend their crappy products. Most of their iphone fanbois will be coming out of contract next summer from the THREEG, I'll bet most of them will be happy to jump ship from ATT.

ATT can DIAFJB!!!!!

Yup, anyone in telco knows what Verizon is doing!! Building the best network, which is not only cell towers but also the physical network that is required to connect all these cell towers together.

Other providers are not building up their backhauls, and it's showing!

not only cell towers but satellites as well...:D for better GPS coverage...but I completely agree with you bro...its definitely showing...

but glad to see and hear that others know what I'm talking about...

I've been called out by AT&T employees saying I don't know what I'm talking about...when my dad at 1 time was running the Engineering department for Verizon in hawaii and my mom was running the billings department also in hawaii...

the hotel I work at now as an audio visual technician...verizon every november comes down for a 2 day seminar/meeting for the sales coordinators and regional managers. I've spoken to the CEO and Vice President on several occasion especially when the iPhone battle between verizon and AT&T were going down...they have confirmed many questions and issues...that's how I am able to keep up with the industry now that my parents no longer work for verizon...

I don't know any of the technical aspects involved in the backhaul part of a network, but a good friend of mine does that for a living and he ALWAYS tells me how crappy AT&T's is. He will go on and on complaining about how old the equipment they use is and that he can't believe they can get away with having such a outdated network. He says they have more trouble then the other big 3 combined when it comes to equipment failure and error. I'm surprised they haven't upgraded everything considering they make so much $$ from the iPhone data plans, hell T-Mobile has better equipment then them and they are small in size compared to AT&T.

I first saw the New ATT commercial with Luke Wilson 2 nights ago around 11:00 p.m. central. It had the Verizon map colored orange, same areas.

Later the next day11/22 I went for a cut and next door was a ATT store,New,very nice looking and empty as it could be, with one lonely employee coming to the front plate glass window and looking out at people driving by like a puppy dog.

Was funny as heck. Its good to see a fight every now and again!

thats the thing bro...AT&T isn't making money on the iPhones...its APPLE that's making most of the money...actually 80% to be more accurate...

the data plans are 1 thing but Apple controls the activation through iTunes. It also controls the downloading content and purchasing of applications, music, videos, etc...because of this very same reason that's why VERIZON opted not to take the iPhone under its wing. Although Apple wanted VERIZON's network, coverage, and speed Verizon wasn't willing to give up the profit margin that APPLE demanded from them.

It was only a matter of time till Verizon teamed up with a cell phone manufacturer and a internet mogul like GOOGLE...now that we have literally the best phone out on the market AT&T and Apple are now scrambling to upgrade software and hardware...but upgrading software will only take you so far...your hardware is going to need updating eventually and like your friend stated...AT&T is using technology that is so old VERIZON outdated that stuff over 10 years ago...

The fact is, the best thing about the iphone is the apps. With android hitting the main stream and showing up on all the carriers in force with a lot of phones, the apps will flow like there is no tomorrow. Just look at all the new stuff that has come out just in response to the droid. The ATT ads are funny. Thousands of apps. But only one phone that has them.

Actually I asked how I can access these "thousands of apps" on a HTC winmo device, since that was not in the highlight box

Saying something is fact, when it's not a fact is purely speculation. Having "thousands of crap apps in itunes is just great". I think the droid hits most of the popular ones already, and it also delivers popular apps that the itunes store doesn't have.

iPhone doesn't need to have simultaneous web browsing and call. They drop so many calls you just wait till the call is dropped, get your movie time, then call back and shout it in the 8 seconds before the second call is dropped. No big deal.

You know the feature you're touting is not a big deal when I didn't even realize my phone couldn't do it because I have never tried it.
OMG Quote of the year, that's goin in my sig! That's hilarious!! :D

So on the ATT edge network and no data when on a call, confirmed by many people.

What's funny, is that I don't see a disclaimer on the new ads about that! Maybe the mention it at the beginning and I didn't notice it. Either way, ATT 3G required, and their 3G map is TINY compared to VZ's. Not to mention all the other issues discussed already in this thread!
