Root Unrevoked Forever

I understand that after rooting w/ unrecoved, I can then apply unrevoked for ever if I don't want to worry about getting it unrooted again correct?

Also what is the radio all about? I see people drooling over it but no threads i've came across explain what it does so I can figure why everyone is so excited.

Correct.

And

We get excited about everything. New radio seems the same, but maybe a better signal...?

read the faq and the instructions twice... its all there

perhaps you missed me saying it in my post the exact thing you referenced :)

my concern is if something random goes bonkers on my phone (i.e. the screen magically dies). that would be something covered under the 1 year warranty you get for free. so basically you'd be shit out of luck if you had this done to your phone and that happened.
and not all of us have insurance to make fraudulent claims with ;)

i don't think the vzw tech is going to check if you have s-off but i suppose if they did you would be sol.

If you have the ota froyo on your evo i don't think you can root correct?
unrevoked is NOT going to change that. if you can root then yes... run s-off and then any ota in the future can be removed if it tries to lock you down.

All these threads are getting me confused. Novice like myself when it comes to rooting are either asking the wrong question or just don't know what to ask and the experts explaining in some threads as "you should already know" from what i've been reading.

here's my question
my phone: EVO
running: the new OTA froyo update that updated those of us who did the pre-release of froyo

unrevoked: can I know root with unrevoked 3 "I understand that after rooting w/ unrecoved, I can then apply unrevoked for ever if I don't want to worry about getting it unrooted again correct?"

Also what is the radio all about? I see people drooling over it but no threads i've came across explain what it does so I can figure why everyone is so excited.

i would put money down a tech would never check.. but say my phone is fubar'd and i need a new phone.. i'm curious if when the refurb dept gets my broken phone how thoroughly they check it.

it's really more speculation/curiosity on my side than actually thinking it's gonna happen. i don't plan on doing this for a while, anyways

With this is it possible to downgrade radios easily? I have the same warranty problem, and my rationale guess is that they may check the readio/kernel/OS version, but not the S setting. Thus, I would like to be able to make the radio stock easily before I upgrade. Will this let me do that?

Yes, it will.

I mean your warranty is void, but if your moral compass spins....go for it :D

Dryn, what order would you recommend using to get back to full stock from any 2.2 with 2+ base and unrevoked forever installed at the time? I'm trying to get a feel for the order of steps while downgrading the radio in particular.

Well mine is done, i set my phone free! Thanks guys for the hard work.

All i need now is a fix for low space icon. ;)

Dumb question: I know there is guides on here showing how to install custom roms and such, i am not running a custom rom yet HOWEVER, is the process going to be the same since i am S-OFF now??

yes s-off really only has to do with flashing your radio and splash screen for now and will allow you to update to the official ota without losing root... roms are all done through clockwork recovery which is still the same as its always been

Nah, I would never cheat Verizon. I would send it back, but if they catch it I would happily (well..begrudgingly) pay the cost, as I do adhere to contracts I sign. However, if they do not catch it no one really did anything wrong. Because when you send it back, they evaluate it to make sure you did not cause the damage (water, etc). If they do not catch s-off, clearly they do not care.

ok, quick question...ran forever, much faster and easier than i expected. rebooted into the bootloader and verified s-off...

however, isn't one of the things this should allow us to do is update clockworkmod from rom manager? i am still on 2.0.1.3 (or something like that), and tried pressing "flash clockwork recovery" in rom manager to update to the newest one...and it didn't work. i rebooted into recovery and i'm still at the old version...

Ok, the noob here has been reading through this stuff for the last few hours now. My head is spinning.

Please correct (or confirm) for me:

- Unrevoked Forever is not Root,

- I need to root with unrevoked3 before i can do unrevoked forever.

- if i don't change the OS after unrevoked forever, i should still get offered the official OTA (whenever it comes).

- Forever will preserve Root when i take the official 2.2 OTA

- or i'll be able to reroot when 2.2 OTA finally comes without the troubles that normally comes with rooting new software updates?

I've read up on some of the custom roms, but can't really get my head around it. Some have broken camcorders, some don't, others need fixes, some have broken GPS, some dont, deoxidized, deodorized, delaminated this and that.. i'll start with root and go from there.

thanks for your help.

Lol. it is all a bit confusing.
You have it close but some details are a little off if I understand the process correctly.

To accept the ota you will probably need to revert back to stock recovery (rooted). this is because the ota will use this to determine weather or not you can upgrade.

After ota you should be able to flash the clockwork recovery (rooted) and be on your merry way HOWEVER since the ota isn't here yet nobody knows for sure.

most of the problems with custom roms have been eliminated since the 8/1 leaked 2.2 build came out.
just make sure you are flashing a recent rom build and you should be good.

Oh so what people are hoping, is that once you have the S-off, we will be able to reinstall the clockwork recovery (and thus gain root) when the new OTA comes out. Or when any new OTA comes out for that matter, without issue.

Whereas before Forever, the assumption was that the OTA would wipe out the custom Clockwork Recovery and the xda folk would have to start from scratch with a new custom recovery... or at least alter the old one to work with the new stock software.

That sound about right?
