PDANet is good, I've been using it for a few days. After the trial they will restrict your access to HTTPS sites and you can pay for the full version. There are some others out there now that are cheaper than PDANet, just search for 'tether' in the Market.
Alternately if you root your phone check out Barnacle Wifi Legacy, it's free, and let's you turn the phone into a hotspot without the Froyo update and works very well.
you can tether the phone to ubuntu, without software on the vibrant, by creating a mobile broadband connection within network manager. there's a preset for t-mobile.
I think t-mobile should include some free tethering minutes with its data plan. Having like 2 hrs of tethering a month would be useful for those emergency situations when you cant get internet on your computer.
pdanet is not a good app at all. Cause you get a free trial then after that free trial you can continue to use it but you cant go to any websites that are secured (facebook, email) and all that. The best one I have her is called kies and its already programmed in your phone.

I called and asked and they told me tethering was included with the android data plan. I use it quite a bit when traveling no extra charges. Thanks T-Mobile.
