Leaving Bberry for Droid ... staying on Verizon

Got suckered into buying the Tour 9630, shortly after which the 9650 came out (less than a month), and seems that it's now obsolete and won't even be eligible for OS6. So ... I've had it with BBerry and I'm ready to move on ....

I want to stay on Verizon, but I can't make up my mind about which Droid to go with.

I've read some harsh stories about the Droid 2, even though I really like the option of a keyboard coming from a BBerry.

Need some advice on what direction I should take?

Droid Incredible?
Droid X?
Droid 2?

Or should I stick it out for a few months, and see what comes out by year end and pull the trigger on a new Droid then?

Firstly, if you're upset about buying a 1-year old phone that isn't eligible for an OS upgrade, you'll be just as disappointed with Android. It's highly unlikely that any device will receive OS updates after 1 year. The Droid itself just now got it's last update (will not get 3.0) a mere 10 months after release. The Eris got it's last update about 6 months after release. Also, if you're within your first month, you could just trade in the 9630 + $30 restocking, and then buy a 9650 at contract price instead.

With that out of the way, if you're still thinking Android, here are your options. Answer these questions;

1. Do you want a big screen? If Yes, get the Droid X. If no, read on.

2. Do you want/need a keyboard? If yes, get a Droid 2, Droid, or Ally. Droid and Ally will likely stop at Android 2.2. Droid 2 will likely get 3.0 and maybe another update. So if you want higher end, get the Droid 2. If you don't want the keyboard, keep reading.

3. Do you just want something with a form factor similar to an Iphone? If yes, get either the Droid Incredible (high end, similar size), the Droid Eris (smaller, 2.1 was last update, less powerful, but competent, and $30 or less on contract), or, wait for the Samsung Fascinate (will be the most powerful of all of these devices).

If none of the above suit you, that's pretty much it for Android-based phones out now or soon to be released on Verizon.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I'm leaning towards a Moto Droid, so my options seem to be the Droid X or the Droid 2.

Coming from a Bberry .. not sure how well i'll adapt to the touch keyboard, so I'm thinking having the physical keyboard will be nice, and give me time to get with technology.

Assuming I can get over not having the physical keyboard ..... The X looks to me like its a better phone, HDMI output, better camera. They only downside would be not being able to get 3.0 on it, and i haven't been able to find any confirmation that the X would be eligible for the new OS.

Other than the physical keyboard on the Droid 2, and it being eligible to get the new OS, what makes Droid 2 better than Droid X? Is there some improvement that I'm not seeing, or is it just that Droid 2 is an improvement on the original Droid, but not necessarily on the X?

Thanks all!

^Its like u said, its more of an improvement on the orig Droid, not really on the X. The 2 does come with Froyo out the box. And by it having a smaller screen it could have a lil better battery life than the X.

I still havent been able to find out if the 2 has Diversity Antennas like the X. If it doesnt, thats just one more pro the X has over the 2.

Like you, I came from a blackberry tour to the Droid X. I love everything about the X, except that fact that it is sooo big. I thought I'd get used to it, but clearly I have not. I'm considering trading it in for the Incredible instead once I finish reading up on the forums about both of them. Going from a physical keyboard to a touch was not that hard a transition for me. I love it! However, I'm a small person with small hands, so I think the big screen on the X is affecting my use of the touch keyboard. By now I'd be used to it but still make several mistakes. I went to Verizon the other day just to type on the Incredible and had no problems with minimal errors. By like I said, my hands are small so it's a little awkward holding and typing on the X. I'm trying out swype now...that I have to get used to. But I think I'm a faster typer than I am with swype.
I'm going to give it another few days before I make a firm decision.
