Another big question is this: Are the phones being processed through a Verizon warehouse, before going to FedEx, or are they dropshipped directly from the factory to FedEx?

I know that during iPhone 4's initial launch period, phones were coming straight UPS's warehouse in Louisville to customers, having previously gone directly from Shanghai to Louisville.

Who has the faulty shipping principles here? Verizon or FedEx?

Also, my phone is shipping from Memphis to South Dakota. I've been sitting on "Shipment information sent to FedEx" since 4:12AM on the 16th. Come tomorrow morning (estimated date of delivery) if it hasn't changed I'm calling FedEx.

verizon is such a tease... i go on my account to check order status and my phone beeps with a new email.

it's an email from verizon!!! but not my shipping notification :(
it's an email saying i can get an additional $100 off the droid x (and also the additional $100 online discount) so with my ne2 i could have gotten the darn thing for free!

I had $50 discount for the NE2, as well as the instant rebate. I then used promo code WEBCH10 to receive (supposed to be 10%) but $15.00 off my order.
Then taxes and (I think) insurance.

I wish I had know about the promo code since I ordered a droid X and two Blackberrys. Overall I did OK though 99 dollars for the X and 149 for the Blackberries which were buy 1 get 1 free. Then the price on those dropped to 99 dollars so the adjusted they price. I doubt they would do a further adjustment if I call about the promo code. Come to think of it, I think I did use a code but it was for free next day shipping, which I could have lived with out.

that was almost cruel lancedriskell lol

i was hoping to get my before friday...... this weekend we'll be screwing around with our accounts (my mom and i are hopping over to my brother's because he gets a corporate discount) and i'll be 10 hours away from my phone if it doesn't come before friday. i'm worried that something will go all funky when i try to activate it when i get back tuesday.

Why? I think that both FedEx and UPS start showing information when the shipping is first entered into their system and not when they actually get handed the package. All FedEx can probably do is tell you they were told there would be a shipment but they have not actually been given the package associated with it. The question may really be why FedEx has apparently not yet received the package from Verizon?

Perhaps you didn't understand the way I phrased things.

Situation 1: Phone travels from factory to Verizon to FedEx to customer.

Situation 2: Phone travels from factory to FedEx to customer.

Which situation is happening tells us who is responsible for wonky shipping practices. If it's situation 1, it's Verizon that needs to learn to ship things properly, if it's situation 2, FedEx needs to learn to ship things properly.

I fully understand the idea that tracking information can seem inaccurate if a package is not yet actually in the hands of the courier. What I'm really curious about is why Verizon would bother to process phones through their own warehouses prior to shipment, rather than dropship them.

Ive been calling CS once a day. Last night I found out that my phone will be here tomorrow.
When did you order?

I would say it seems average waiting time is 7-10 days. Mine is suppose to arrive Wed. and I ordered in store last Friday.
This is what irks me. I get that people live in other locations and warehouse availability varies, but this just pisses me off. It's one thing to not get some random care package because of where we live, but to get poor service because of it too? I'm not hating on you in the slightest markbb. I'm happy that you got your phone and I wouldn't wish it any other way. I'm just annoyed at Verizon. They give us these long-ass ship-by dates so that customers can't bitch at them when other people get their phones earlier. They're totally covering their asses at the expense of the customers' experience. All this really does in the long run is make sure that Verizon doesn't have to pay any extra fees because they can't properly manage their stock. I would rather not receive a, "ship-by," date at all if it's only there to allow them to play it safe. I don't want a, "ship-by," date. I want an actual ETA. Either tell us when you expect our device to be shipped, or come out and say that you have no idea because you can't properly do what you're expected to do with our money.

You ordered your device five days after I did, and you already have shipping information and will receive it tomorrow. I ordered last Sunday, (not this week's Sunday, but the one before that) and I haven't received any real information in any way. It's simply unfair and it shouldn't be happening. Even if they can't properly spread out shipments evenly, they could at least be letting us know when they expect our property to be sent out. Uneven shipping distribution is one thing, and is actually somewhat expected, but to leave us in the dark like this while it happens is totally not okay.

I'm going to call VZW CS in a couple hours, (I haven't yet today) and I really hope I'm going to be getting some good news. I could seriously use the pick-me-up, what with the week that I've been having.

Thank you. I know I'm probably being annoying and just overreacting a little bit. I don't usually get this riled up about something like this, but I'm starting to get really irritated and worried that something isn't right.

Now that I think about it, if Verizon doesn't manage to ship by the date they gave me, what will happen? I realize there's some sort of crediting that occurs, but what are the specifics?

try not to worry so much. the time it is taking for your phone to ship is COMPLETELY normal. all these people getting their phones so quickly is totally abnormal. you still have a week or so til your "ship-by" date, right? i'm almost certain nothing is wrong. if they dont ship by that date, they will give you a credit on youre account in the neighborhood of $25. although, i dont think i have heard of a single instance of that happening yet (although, it happened with the Dinc a lot).

let me ask you, when you ordered the phone, did they give you a ship by date? what was it? i dont think it's very fair to get pissed at them when you full well knew what that ship by date was. they fully disclosed a date they agreed to ship it by, and you still ordered the phone anyway. dont get mad at them until they dont come thru on their word.

Exactly.

Everyone can sit there all high and mighty just knowing that they would run things differently, and it'd be so much better, and Verizon are clearly a bunch of idiots... but the reality is we have no idea how and why things are running the way they are. What if Motorola refuses to drop ship? What if they have pre-set orders for various warehouses, and their system is set up to ship immediately whatever phone comes up next? What if it's more efficient to ship further than it is to implement a new national inventory management system?

There are so many complexities to this that I'm sure very few of the people complaining appreciate.

The fact is, you knew when Verizon expected to send the phone to you. They told you a date when you ordered, and you accepted it. By all accounts, they are soundly beating those dates. That's to be praised, not complained about.

I know this. However, for once, I actually want to be a part of the abnormal crowd. :(

Yes, but that doesn't actually relate much to my point. Read my statement after next quote.

I ordered in-store and was not given this date until I called up their CS on the phone and asked when it was supposed to arrive. I had a feeling it would take a while since I read about the back-orders, but I did not have an exact date of any kind. Even if I did know the date ahead of time, I would still be aggravated at this point. My true frustration isn't a result of a simple long wait. I'm not annoyed that it's taking a nice chunk of time for it to be shipped. Sure, it's irritating, but no more irritating than I would come to expect and nothing out of the ordinary. I'm annoyed because people who have ordered later than I have already have their phone. I'm wanting fairness, not simply a quicker delivery.

Imagine going to a nearby Burger King and standing in line. There is one person in front of you who is ordering. They finish ordering and paying and go stand to the side to wait for their food. You order the same meal, and go do the same. While the next two people are placing the exact same order, the first person receives their food in a timely manner. The two who ordered after you are now waiting next to you. Their food is brought up to the counter and they go sit down to start eating. More and more people order and receive their meal, while you're left waiting. You've done nothing wrong or different, yet you get treated with slower service.

I fully understand that there are probably a ton of other variables and things to consider when it comes to shipping these devices to every corner of an entire country. I don't need some college degree in business management to understand that there's more to it than simple orders at a fast food chain. I'm not even necessarily asking Verizon or Motorola to try and do better at getting these things out to people. I'm simply asking for better service in general. I want them to let us know why these things are happening, instead of leaving us sitting here with our thumbs up our asses wondering what the hell is going on.

I want them to ****ing clue us in.

i couldnt have said it better myself. verizon wireless is broken up in to 4 areas, and 21 regions. and thousands of phones get ordered every day. there isnt just one queue of people waiting for phones. there are many warehouses that ship to many people. we are talking about a company with 95 MILLION customers. lets not forget, that some people love going to forums and telling little white lies to get people riled up. also, lets not forget that there are an abundance of indirect dealers who dont get the phones from verizon, but from the manufacturer or other distributors. try not to worry about everyone else, and try to give verizon time to ship until the date they quoted you when you ordered the phone. if you werent okay with waiting that long, you shouldnt have ordered the phone in the first place.

they have clued you in!!! they gave you a ship by date. if they havent, let me know, and i will.

i would equate it a little more like this....

you went to burger king in houston texas. you went at 3 in the afternoon, but it was busy. you waited for 5 minutes to get your food. but, then you got home and got on the burger king forum, and found out someone in salt lake city utah only waited 1 minute at the same time in the afternoon. would you really get upset at burger king because the wait times in houston are longer than those in a different part of the country? like i said, there are 21 different regions, and they all do things just a little differently. verizon services 95 million customers. unfortunately, they simply cant have one direct fulfill warehouse servicing one single queue of people.

When I said I want them to clue us in, I didn't mean that at all. I already pointed out that I don't give a damn about their, "ship-by," date as it's only there to serve their own purposes. It only calms those who don't think into things more and wonder what's really going on. I'm unfortunately not one of those people. You apparently didn't read my last posting closely enough because I already stated that I received a ship-by date. I stated how, when, and under what circumstances.

I want them to tell me when they think the device will actually ship. I don't want them to go, "Uhh... I don't know, but it shouldn't be any worse than this! *holds up date and gives cheesy smile*" It just shows that they have no idea and it looks pretty bad from a customer's standpoint.

I could care less as to the latest that my phone will arrive. I want to know when it is actually supposed to be processed for shipping. The fact that they don't know this makes them look incompetent, whether they are or not.

EDIT: I do agree with your version of the fast food analogy, by the way. Like I already said, I understand that there's more to it than what some of us may immediately assume. I just wish they would give us something to mill over while we wait. I'm tired of not knowing what the hell is going on.

Example:

Phones available in the east but not the west.
Customer A from the east orders on the 10th and receives on the 16th.
Customer B from the west orders on the 9th but receives nothing (so far).

Is that how it works? Because this is what I've been seeing happening and it seems rather unfair. Why can't you just ship Customer B his/her phone from the east because he/she ordered earlier? If the phones to Customer A and B are shipped from the east on the same day (due to a large stock or something) and Customer A gets his/her phone first, that makes sense. But Customer B isn't even getting a shipping notification or anything so that isn't what's occurring, right?

From what I can tell, certain warehouses appear to be literally, "reserved," for their corresponding locations. The people in the area of the warehouse end up being higher priority than those halfway across the country, even if those people ordered earlier. I don't necessarily agree with this method, but I do understand the reasoning behind it.

well, i understand your frustration. but, no matter how many times you call customer service, they wont have an answer for you, because they have no way of finding out. verizon has an internal page that says "if the phone was ordered on x date, it will ship by y date." that's it. it's not a perfect system, but they're keeping their promises, and shipping to customers by the dates they've promised. that's better than nothing.

and like i said before, 1.) you dont know that everything you've read on this thread is true. and 2.) you dont know that they ordered from verizon direct. some indirects are shipping sooner. for the most part, people who ordered later, are not getting their phones before people who ordered first. there may be some out of the norm, but it isnt as common as you might think because of the few things you've read on this thread.
