I need help. Today my Evo's screen crapped out. It literally faded to black in the middle of me answering an alarm. The backlight is on but the screen is completely black. I was going to take it to a repair center today then i remembered that the phone is rooted. I know they'll put me down for a replacement phone, but when it comes time to send it back, how can I get it back to stock so they don't see that I've voided my warranty?

How can they know it's rooted if they can't see the screen?

I'm referring to when I exchange the phone out for my replacement. I assume they are not going to take the phone back and toss it in the trash. They are going to fix it and discover it at that point. I've never returned a rooted/jailbroken device before so i don't know if they even check for that but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yes, its LEGAL to do it now, but that doesnt negate the fact that rooting still voids the warranty.

Yep. If you are paying the $7 A MONTH insurance just say it was stolen. If you don't want to lie just go to a bad part of town and leave it sittting somewhere. Someone will steal it.

That's insurance fraud, and IS illegal.

If I lose the phone, then I have to pay $100. And I'm not paying that for an issue I didn't create. I'm going to see if my pc recognizes the phone and see if i can flash from there. I took it to the sprint repair store yesterday and they put me down for a replacement. Said it might take 4 days because the phone is on backorder.

I would bet that they would simply replace the screen and flash the phone to stock. I doubt they would look or care. If it happens to me, I am not even removing the extra wires I soldered to it, I will just snip them off where they are hidden.

Yes, and then file a police report, etc. More of a PITA than I would do to break the law myself.

The mods here take a very unkind view of anyone who uses this forum to promote fraud.

The rest of us are just adults who find it offensive.

Don't get your panties all bunched up.

He pay's his $7/month for insurance. Insurance covers anything defective for free, anything your fault you pay $100 deductible.

If I go outside a Sprint store and intentionally drop my phone in the parking lot, then go back in and say I just dropped my phone...they'd give me a replacement minus my $100 deductible.

I don't see what the problem is.....

People need to get over themselves. Saying your phone was lost of stolen and keeping it or profiting from it while making a claim would be insurance fraud. Leaving it somewhere that it gets stolen or lost would NOT be insurance fraud. Look at your policy. It does NOT specify HOW your phone was stolen it lost, just that it was.

As far as the mods here frowning on illegality; until recently, rooting a phone was considered illegal and that didn't stop them explaining how to do it here.

Losing a phone and filing a claim for it is not insurance fraud. You are no longer in possession of the device and have not sold it or given it to a friend to use for free. If you threw your phone against the wall because it dropped an important call filing a claim would not be insurance fraud.

The real question we should be asking is why rooting a phone whose os is based upon an open source language should void ones warranty. That's like sending someone a phone covered in chocalote and voiding their warranty if they taste it.

Now that right there is funny.

"Yes, I burned my house down. What do you mean it isn't covered??? I am insured against fire, dammit!"

Burning down your house is ARSON. There is no law against losing something. I also have a pretty good feeling that your fire insurance policy has wording that says you cannot claim in case of arson. You cell phone insurance does not specify how the phone was lost or what you mindset was when it was lost, only that it was lost.

If they start trying to read minds they could claim that every lost phone was done so intentionally and deny all claims. However, intentional arson is much easier to prove based upon physical evidence.

I do.not purport to be a legal expert, this is just my opinion. YMMV.

Franky, comparing losing a phone to burning down ones house is kind of silly.
