Fix for silencing phone via volume rocker in 2.2

RingGuard now has a "2.2 silence fix only" option, for those who don't want RingGuard's main function. With this option checked, a volume change causes RingGuard to pop up a window whose only purpose is to catch volume rocker presses. The window goes away after a configured time, or when you touch "Dismiss".

When the phone is already on vibrate, pushing volume-down won't cause a volume change, so RingGuard won't pop up the window. Push volume-up to get the window, and then volume-down to silence. It's easier than it sounds, and easier than using a widget.

"High priority" (foreground) option gets the window up faster, without impairing overall phone performance as far as I can tell. Downside is that it does create an ongoing notification.

RingGuard needs camera permission to check if the camera is in use, so it doesn't interfere with it. Checking camera status on some phones (e.g. Moto Droid) causes audible soft clicking. There's an option to suppress the camera status check.

I liked Silent and would like it back, but not sure why vibrate is such an issue for so many.

anyway, this seems like way more "effort" and potential battery use and notifications then I am willing to tolerate. but thanks for the tip.

There is also two Apps that might help. They are called something like "flip to silent" and "Flip to vibrate" or something like that.

If you place the phone face down it will either silence the phone or switch it to vibrate.
That doesn't work for every situation too well but it works for a lot of work related situations.

If no one had come up with a better fix that was my solution to Verizon/Motorolla helping us screw up a perfectly good volume rocker situation.

I'm living with the 'new' 2.2 way of silent vs. vibe but I think the reason this is so stupid and people are annoyed is because every single phone I've had since I got my first motorola (way back in 199? from some Bell that became Verizon) had a volume rocker/button that did volume up/down >>> vibe >>>> silent. Perhaps I make a bold assumption that not all other phones I never owned were the same way, but I bet most were. I've seen no 'reason' for the change so why change this now?

Get a widget to do it for you, this is the best one: Ring Toggle. Search for "ring toggle" in the market. Very simple app, press it, it comes up with a menu of sound choices, select what you want (Vibrate, Ring & Vibrate, Vibrate Only, or Silent) and it sets it and closes itself. -droidosis-

btw, it is an app, not a widget

AGIAN.. this just begs the question as to why the feature is not exploitable in a root or rom function since "silent" is clearly still capable.

I made a cooler background image, but dont have a way to sign an apk on my mac to convert it back from a zip to an apk to install my version of the app

Agree with Lock-N-Load. Sometimes I need to be able to quickly silence my phone when I am going into a meeting (vibrate is not an option) and other times I don't need it silent just on vibrate. This feature needs to be brought back.

I agree it is completely stupid to have removed that functionality from the rocker switch...
Just what we all wanted, less capability from a single external control...

But am I the only one who thinks that the flip to silent/flip to vibrate thing is a great stop-gap solution?

At the office I can have it set to "flip to silent" and every time my phone is face-down it will be silent, face up, and it is back to ringing. That plus the current rocker-switch function seems to handle everything I think...at least for work.
Until someone brings back the full-function of the rocker switch which seems superior and inevitable.

No app. Needed to silence. Toto to settings / sound/vibrate. Select not to vibrate when silenced. Works with the volume rocker and on the unlock slide screen..

Don't forget, it's also on the power button... Just press and hold for a second, tap on silent and voila -- it's silent...

yes, sometimes vibrate isn't an option, like in a courtroom with a judge that is just waiting to unload on an attorney with a wayward cell phone.

found out my time/weather app already has a vol/silence/vibe widget...solved.

That doesn't work on mine. The problem isn't getting to silent mode, the problem is silent mode is either all silent or all vib.

"Silent Mode" from the press-and-hold-power menu gives me vibrate, not silent. From the other discussions I know there's some combination of deeply buried settings that'll change this, but anything (app, widget, whatever) is better than that. It was trivial to add this function to plain RingGuard, and I figured I'd spend a little extra time to make it available to people who don't want RingGuard functionality.

Me too. I have thought since day one of my life w/Droid that they took too much "phone" out of the phone!

Actually, it is a widget. You're talking about Ring Toggle (which is an app). Ringer Toggle Widget is what the other people are talking about.

I use the SilentMode OnOff widget on my home screen. One click goes to vibrate, second click to silent, third click back to set volume.

I've had this a long time, but assume it is still on the Market.

I never use the volume button except to change the volume, vibrate/silent is handled by the widget.
