Exchange Sync Comparison

I've been using Touchdown and really like it. I chose it over Dataviz because it does Tasks as well as Calendar, E-mail, and Contacts. So far it doesn't do Task reminders, but I think they recently added Tasks and are still developing it. The developer seems very responsive to user suggestions. They have a link to their google group on the home page where users make suggestions or report bugs and the developer responds.

Also, with dataviz I couldn't see my sent items folder or my helpdesk folder...don't remember which. In td you can also configure it to show messages from all of your monitored folders in the same view. This allows me to see all messages in all folders, including sent items, a la blackberry which was something I was REALLY missing with the default client....switching folders on a handheld is too cumbersome for my taste. TD also has better notification options, allowing to even control whether you want the LED to flash or not! It was really no contest for me.

Built in exchange function works well... but.. no signature, can't move between folders.

Have tried RoadSync by DataViz- horrible- uses way too much memory and brings computer to halt, and totally lacks any support as it is a beta- unstable and freezes Droid a lot. Used Touchdown- OK, but looks like something from Windows mobile 5 years ago.

The best so far and I really like is Moxier Mail. It really works great. Can move between folders, syncs very fast, integrated in, much more current looking than Touchdown.

Try them all and find the one you like.

I need some serious help please!!!! I'm not that dumb (until now) but if someone could help me out in a child like direction.

I am trying to sync my droid with a non-exchange account, Outlook, yahoo address on Vista.

I've been reading all the threads but can't seem to figure this out. 1. Can the Droid sync with Outlook and a yahoo account? 2. Do I need an exchange and then an additional 3rd party app to configure this?

I have tried many things but I think I am missing a step somewhere. I tried 1and1 exchange but they said I couldn't use my yahoo account through Outlook. I tried the Missing Sync but I can't get my phone to work with my laptop (my understanding through the threads that bluetooth connection is enabled for the Droid to connect to my laptop). I used gsync (sp) and it kept losing contacts. I tried some many apps and configuring but I can't figure this out.

I know that android isn't BB but I need this to sync like a BB to my Outlook with out doing part Google sync (contacts and calendar) and then something else for email and so on. I did get my yahoo account to come to my phone but because I still need it on my Outlook I can never delete anything because I leave it on server. I have my contacts but no sync and Google screws up my contacts every time. The Google calendar isn't the worst think in the world but I can't see how this has to be so difficult to acheive.

If I am in the wrong thread can someone please move me!!!! My 30 days is up on Dec. 6th and I'm at the point of frustration that if I can't figure this out in 30 days I guess the phone is smarter than I and I should just go back to my BB. Any and all help old be much appreciated!

You can't "sync" over the air with Outlook I don't think without access to an exchange server account. All you can do is get email. However, as soon as MarkSpace (markspace.com) comes out shortly with their Missing Sync for Android that supports Android 2.0 you'll be able to sync with your Outlook contacts and calendar on your PC via USB. Go to the site and you'll see a discussion of the Android version they expect to have out soon. They have a beta now, but it is not for Android 2 on the Droid. I wouldn't return your Droid.

I have a personal exchange account and pay about $80 a year for it, but it is worth it- full syncing. You could sync your outlook to a gmail account, then have gmail sync to your computer. How you do this I don't know, but I have heard it is easy to do.

My Outlook calendar synced with gmail. I didn't want my contacts to sync because they are all work related and I'm six months away from no longer being with this job. The accounts that I had set up in Outlook I set up in K9 mail and they work great! Oh, and tasks also synced with gmail tasks. It seems to work pretty darn good for me.

Thanks for the comments. I haven't yet got access to the sync server in order to test, but that should happen this week -- I'll let you know what I come across.

I'd got the impression from reading various threads that the built-in exchange support was severely lacking, but it sounds like it's actually almost there.

I'm using the built in Exchange functionality with no issues. I had to download Corporate Directory though, which is a cool app that allows you access to your Exchange's Global Address List.
So, no access to the Corp Directory without yet another piece of software? Can anyone else confirm this?

I'd also concluded that Touchdown was one of the more popular -- interesting to hear it's UI is lacking. If the functionality is there though, that's enough for now.

Not heard of this one -- I'll do some research.

Good point. Are there any nasty side effects from switching clients? Do events get duplicated, etc? I didn't want to switch in case things got screwed up -- that used to happen on the Palm platform with annoying regularity.

The biggest problem with exchange support is that it is not compatible with exchange servers that require password locking. Any big corporation probably requieres password locking. My company does so I had to buy Touchdown because it allowed for this. I hope google adds this much needed functionality!

Would that explain why i cannot get my exchange to work with my college email ?

Carmen,

Outlook is a mail client. You can configure a mail client to recieve/send from many different sources of e-mail.

Exchange is more corporate in that the mail server is Microsoft Exchange.

If you have personal e-mail your Outlook is likely to get it via POP3 or IMAP. Yahoo mail is usually POP3 as are most other internet mail providers. Some are IMAP in that the mail stored on a mail server can be syncronized with several mail clients (be it Outlook or phone). Meaning if you delete on one its gone on the other or if the messages is downloaded on one its still seen on the other...

Its probably best to search on your mail provider site for the settings you will need to setup your phone...
