USB Device Not Recognized

That's the error win 7 gives me when I plug in my Hero (cdma, not sprint, running zen-EXP-0.9.6.2 update 2) it won't let me do anything with the phone via the computer.

I've tried changing sd cards to no avail, tried changing roms, but the phone wouldn't finish booting with any other rom that I have, (or even a reinstall of the currently used rom) I don't have any previous nandroid backups. (I swear I made them! but they weren't found!)

Anybody have any ideas? I'm at a loss as to what even happened here unless it was a malicious program.

Thanks for any help you might have.

Fixed it! turns out it was a faulty USB cable (2 actually as the one I used to see if it was the cable before was faulty.) Thanks again for the help!

Oddly enough, I just began receiving the very same error message today. This is despite the fact that for all of the past nine months, including heavy drive use this past week, it all worked flawlessly. I use Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

EDIT: Ha, what do you know? I jammed the loose end of the USB wire insulation cover back into the mini-USB end, and it all suddenly began working.
