Motorola clamps down on Droid X's leaked Android 2.2 upgrade with cease and desist scare

Why don't we have any business doing it? It's not unlike flashing a custom ROM...

Also, why would there be 5000 bricked droids? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to flash back to stock using sbf... In addition, I haven't run into one problem with Froyo and I am glad that I did it.

Here is the problem with your thought.

I have done tech support for over 5 years of my life (and counting). There are people out there that cannot understand how to copy and paste. A heavy majority of users that do not know what web browser or operating systems they use.

I am currently working tech support for a private company who manages colleges. I have seen students that have been academically dismissed because they failed their Computer Literacy class 3 times in a row.

Granted in your mind, it does not take a rocket scientist to do it. But again there are tons of users out there that really have no business in the world doing that. The news of this update has hit many websites and thus when those users accidentally stumble on the news, they may try this.

The official motorola forums under droid X are starting to see the morons flock to there talking about this unofficial update.

(Note: to even join their forums, you need to enter the IMEI from your phone.)

I have to agree with this, I was in tech support for 3 years with different companies and now a Systems Analyst at my company....half of our end users call their Monitor the computer, and the computer the hard drive. I really never knew people were so stupid until I started in tech support...

i work for verizon, and while i work in a corporate office, i know that much of the stores' resources go toward troubleshooting issues that could easily be solved by a simple google search.
the fact is, people just dont want to figure things out on their own. they want their hand held.
so, people hear about the update, they learn just enough to figure out how to do it, and they'll go into the store when they cant connect via usb, or one of the many other bugs that exist.
when you're paying a sales person $50k a year, and they spend half of their day troubleshooting stupid little issues, it's a big deal when they get flooded with issues like this that could be avoided by stopping them from doing it in the first place.

I have no problem waiting for an official release of 2.2 but I have a real problem with Motorola taking so long to issue a fix for important things like the terrible implementation of WiFi on this phone. WiFi worked fine on my Droid yet with the Droid X I can't stay connected long enough to run a speed test. It will not download an app without disconnecting and reconnecting 4 or 5 times, web browsing is a miserable experience.

If this is a softare issue they should be able to come up with a fix within hours and send it to everyone within days. There is no excuse for leaving us with a useless feature for so long.

Look folks, we are talking about the average Joe out there bricking their phones with this leak and then inundating tech support with their issues, but that doesn't make sense. Why?

1) Nobody is bricking their phones with this leak. Look through the forums here and there aren't threads proclaiming that their phone is ruined from trying to install the update.

2) These "average joes" who are bound to screw something up and brick their phones aren't even going to know about the release in the first place, much less how to copy that file over to the SD card and then reboot into a special mode where they can install it.

I understand if you want to wait for the official release, but it is not like this leak has caused all types of issues and instabilities within our Droid X phones, and for the most part everyone seems to be very happy that they went ahead and installed it. I am glad I won't have to wait until September.

1) a ton of people got their phones stuck in a boot loop. it just so happened that thru a lot of posting, people were able to get out of it. but the people who use forums to fix their problems are actually a very small subset of android users.

2) the very first Droid X facebook page i joined even announced it. it's everywhere.
and yes, this leak has caused all kinds of bugs that a lot of people are likely to go to their local verizon store with. (usb issues, music player issues, camera flash issues, etc.) it has been great for me (after i reloaded it 3 times after flashing back with the .sbf).

Same here. Lol. They flipped out when they got a flat screen. Wanted to know if the "new computer" would run as fast, since it was so thin. Lol!

The leaked 2.2 breaks the Android Market since Google hasn't updated the market to know what "Motorola Shadow 2.2" is yet. That seems like a good reason to try to stop this leak if you ask me. Plus the other bugs people are reporting. This is not a release-quality ROM, and I expect the final release ROM in September will be a newer build than this one.

People really are stupid.

If you can't follow the simple instructions to install the update you should be waiting for the OTA. It is only causing problems on phones that were rooted and themed for the most part, and if you are an average person and have no clue what you are doing you shouldn't be rooting and theming anyways. I bricked my phone but that had nothing to do with the update, it had to do with messing with system files and it was my fault. I had some problems with sbf, but eventually i got it figured out and i am rooted again running froyo just fine.

One of many "2.2 screwed up my phone threads". Not that the phone was bricked during the install, but that this issue happened after the fact. Point being, phone is bricked after installing a unofficial release. Also take note that another member told the guy to take his phone back to VZW to get a new phone.

This is what angers me the most. People jack up their phones, send them to VZW, who the sends those back to Moto. And people wonder why the boot loader is encoded on these phones.

As far as number 2 is concerned. You surely don't think android forums is the only android based forum right? there are lots of other android forums out there with probably less knowledgeable people.

The market works great for me. The new design isn't quite as nice as I was hoping.

I upgraded to the leaked 2.2 Froyo. I can't be happier...it's tasty!

From what I understand this is the revision that Motorola is submitting to VZN for official release. Motorola has already done all the software testing with the DroidX. All that VZN does with the Motorola submitted revision is, if needed, make any marketing/proprietary tweaks to it. Usually, they take away functionality, rather than add to it. So I would rather update my phone with this version than the upcoming OTA update.

Much thanks for that Motorola employee for leaking this....I hope he/she still has a job there. ;)

I agree! I have rooted phones and updated to several different unofficial ROMs. HOWEVER, each time that I have ever performed an operation like this I fully accepted that I was doing so at my own risk. If something would have gone wrong that would cause my phone to be inoperable (which would take talent as it's pretty well fool proof) then that would have been my fault and ultimately my loss.

What ever happened to people being held accountable for their actions? If you mod your xbox to play non approved software and mess it up in the process do you turn around and ask Bill Gates to replace it for you? Come on.

People pretty much did do that with xbox's. The old xbox people would goof up and brick the xbox trying the solder/TSOP flash method and either bring the xbox back to the store. OR buy a new xbox and put the bricked one back in the box and bring it back to the store.

Since places like walmart were not trained on things like this, they would get their refunds.

*Ahem* people reading Engadget and Boy Genius are NOT your typical Verizon users. They are geeks, and if they brick their phone with some weird music player bug then they should be able to figure out how to fix it. If I tell my sister or buddy about Engadget, they are going to wonder WTF I am talking about! They also will have no clue what the hell Froyo even means. This is because they are regular users who enjoy their phones but don't search out and install leaked OSs before the come OTA.
