Help Earpiece speaker blown, or just dirty?

So I've noticed a lot of discussion happening about this buzzing/rattling earpiece problem that's happening with the Droid X. I would just like to get this clarified for myself, and hopefully it will answer others' questions as well.

I've had my Droid X for about a week now. The first thing I noticed when I made my first call with it was the earpiece buzzing when it was at the top two volume levels. I didn't think anything of it at first until it became a bit too intrusive and I saw online that others were having this problem. The two most popular theories I've read about thus far was A) it is because of a blown/loose speaker within the earpiece, or B) there are particles of dust (or whatever) on the speaker cone. The former problem could only be fixed with a phone replacement, while the latter can be fixed with blasting the earpiece with a a compressed air duster.

Obviously I wanted to try the compressed air option before I up and replaced my highly customized phone. I went to the store and blasted the speakers a bit myself and it definitely helped, but not all the way. I then went to the Verizon store and told them about the problem. They said they had a few customers come in with that problem and they fixed them all the same way. He took my phone and thoroughly blasted it with air, and then dialed a test call with #85. He gave it back to me and my phone has sounded great for four days.

My only concern is that this may be a temporary fix to broken hardware. I'd like to think if they are blasting the phones at the Verizon stores themselves, that it isn't broken hardware. Also, I've been reading on threads that customers are continuously getting replacements that do the same buzzing thing. This makes me think that it is just a matter of dust particles because would this phone come out with so many defective speakers and there not be a recall? Dust sounds more plausible to me. I just don't wanna be walking around with busted hardware that had a temporary fix done to it before my 30-day replacement period expires. PLEASE LEND YOUR INPUT! Peace!

there's two schools of thought to this one, i'm not going to say which is better or worse. one, get a replacement. I did with my original and I got a great working one back. I figure, i spent so much on the thing it should just work out of the box, I shouldn't have to blow air into it.

Now the second thought, is the compressed air like you said. The rattle can be a loose speaker or a stuck speaker. If it's a loose speaker, the air can be temporary since the speaker more than likely will come loose again from normal use. If it is really a stuck speaker, it's more than possible the compressed air is releasing it and truly fixing it.

For me, I didn't want to take that chance and just got it replaced. Obviously it's your choice, just wanted to give my .02

I had this problem on my second droid X. This was to replace my first that was doing weird screen timeout things and had a dead red pixel. My first phone sounded great all the way up to the highest volume. The second phone was HORRIBLE right from the call to activate. I now have a third one and the speaker is perfectly fine. I would get a replacement if I was you.
