Accessories Case Mate Tough Case review w/ pics

I ordered one last Wednesday via BzB's review(thank you), and I received it today, I was holding out for an Otterbox, but last week I launched my Incredible off my lap when getting out of the car, it survived with just a scuff, but that incident motivated me to stop waiting around for Otterbox, I'm totally happy with Case-Mate, fit and finish tolerances are good, accessibility and function of hard keys is just fine, I'm not noticing any difference. I don't use the D-pad much it doesn't look like a considerable issue, but I could see the polymer part of the case getting in the way a little, if it is an issue I will just shave down a little concave groove there. With the little time I've had it, I think I will be completely happy with the case.

Case-Mate should add some different polymer case colors options, if they do, I would pick something up in a red tone.

I think slipping the phone in and out of your pocket should be better/easier than just a polymer case cover, the harder plastic creates less friction, its a non issue for me, just thought I would make the comment because someone mentioned this as a concern of theirs.

How does this case compare to the Seidio Active?

from the original post...

Recently picked up the case mate tough case for the incredible. First thing I'll say is this is an excellent case. It comes with a silicon sleeve with a hard plastic shell that fits over it, basically the exact same setup as the seidio active case. I currently have the black seidio active case and comparing the two I'd say this case is definitely the better of the two. It's the details that make it better. Both the sleeve and the hard shell have a smooth satin like feel and doesn't feel as rubbery as the seidio sleeve. The power and volume buttons are more recessed than the seidio case yet the buttons are more responsive and don't take as much effort to register a press, especially the power button. The headphone plug has a better cut-out. The hard shell has raised texturing that make it feels good and also gives a more confident feeling of grip. Honestly the only reason to choose the seidio case over this one would be if you really want a color other than black. If case mate offers theirs in different color then seidio might as well stop making theirs, the case mate case is that much better and it's the same price. Any questions let me know. On with the pics...

if you have any specific questions not answered above then shoot.

Just got mine today and so far i'm liking it.Anyone found a good way of putting a screen protector on without getting bubbles?

When I first put the soft case into the shell I had some issues with the volume buttons being pressed but a little wiggling the soft rubber around made everything fine.

Nice case and quick ship.:)

I came here just to thank the OP. I'll quote myself from the "Verizon Red Gradient" phone case thread.

I just switched from this case to the case-mate tough case.

I didn't like that the parts of the phone that snapped together didn't seem to line up. Other than that, it's a good case. Very smooth and nice feel to it. I had it on my phone at work (unloading trucks) and I don't know how many times I flinched when my phone cracked on a metal bar leading up the stairs to the compactor. Each time, the case took the blow. It only snapped open once and I caught it on break and pushed it back together. :) Phone uninjured.

The tough case, however, has an even silkier feel, hugs the phone tighter, gives better access to the 3.5mm jack. The buttons are protected by the inner silicon case. I feel so much more confident about my phone just having it in this case.

It really is awesome.

Any issues hitting the edge keys when typing in portrait mode on the keyboard? My wife has the Body Glove case and it seems to make it hard to hit the 'P' key due to the raised edge of the case around the screen. Love the protection the Body Glove offers but not wild about how it sort of blocks the keys.

Not really. The inner silicon case is very very thin and really only comes far enough over the edge of the phone to cover half of the black between the screen and the edge of the phone. My thumb DOES touch the case when hitting "P" in portrait, but it's got a very silky smooth feel so my thumb just glides against the case and isn't restricted.

This video is the best I can do. Sadly my Incredible is the best camera I own. :p

Curious how the phone is without the outer shell? Does it offer enough protection, raising the screen and camera lens from surfaces? How is the grip on the silicone cover?

I ask because I may just want to use the inner cover and exclude the outer to make it more thin.

The inner case is very silky feeling and very flexible. the buttons for the power and volume rocker are on the inner case. If you want the protection offered by this case I would definitely recommend using the outer case. Otherwise check out the "barely there" cases. The added bulk from the outer case really isn't that much. The screen is raised enough but the camera is not.

The silicone layer is molded to fit the outer shell, so the outer doesn't really add any bulk. They are designed to fit together, if you don't want the outer hard shell I would recommend getting something else.

Per my caliper:

Incredible- .486"
Inc w/silicone case- .575"
Inc w/silicone & ABS casing- .648"

I wouldn't recommend just using the silicone casing by itself, it was designed to be used with the ABS casing, when used together the silicone case upper lip that encompasses the screen is flush with the ABS casing, using the silicone casing by itself, you end up with a flimsy lip that would be bothersome and probably not effective for protection by itself. But the silicone case Does have a ridge around the screen and the camera lens.

Why spend $20-$30 on the Tough Case if you don't want to use the outer ABS casing? I'd just go buy a stand alone silicone case for half the price.
