Root New to this...

As mentioned there are several methods for rooting now..... they all pretty much achieve the same results.... and all go about it the same way....... the only difference between them is the amount and type of inputs you need to make.......

Good Luck and welcome to Root..... Im sure youll never look back

As far as Froyo goes...... theres no 'official' Froyo release for the Eris....... there are however several Froyo Roms available ........ KaosFroyo is one example of a Froyo Rom....... this one seems to be the most popular...... but there are others available as well

My suggestion is read everything you can about all the various roms available (both 2.1 and 2.2) and decide which one will best suit your needs....... of course you arent stuck with any particular rom so you can easily try a few different ones out until you find what you like

Would Universal Eric Root for Dummies be a good one to do? Are there any problems with this? Is kaosfroyo the same as froyo?? I know, alot of questions but I DO NOT want to screw this up!

I used the Universal Eris Root for Dummies method and it was extremely easy to do. I cannot speak for the others, but I hear the one click method is even easier. As for your second question, I will hopefully answer this correctly (still trying to get all my knowledge). kaosfroyo is the same as froyo. If I am thinking correctly, froyo is the name of the 2.2 firmware released to the other android phones. Any rom with froyo in the name should essentially tell you that it is a 2.2 rom. They just all come with different shiny names.

If any of this info is wrong, you guys are more than welcome to let me know. Like I said, I'm still relatively new to all this as a whole.

JXW, my guess is that when you are downloading a ROM it is going into your download folder, not the root (bottom) folder on your SD. This is assuming that you have already applied your chosen method of root and you have superuser permissions and a recovery partition (usually Amon-Ra) properly installed.

Either connect to your computer and move it with windows file manager, or install a utility such as Root Explorer or Astro File Manager and move it with that utility. Once the ROM is in the root folder, reboot into recovery and it should be listed. Please note, it is STRONGLY recommended to do a nand backup before installing a new ROM, as well as a triple wipe (system, dalvik, sd).

This. There's no telling how many times I've forgotten to move a rom from my download folder to my root directory. It really is annoying to find that out once you're in recovery.

Actually even from inside recovery you can mount the SD to the computer and move files that way. Of course that does no good if you aren't near a computer.

sorry sound like such a rookie, but i cant seem to move it to the sd card. i downloaded astro and i can not figure out how to move it to the sd card. can someone give me a better program to use or instructions?

thanks so much

In Astro, long press the file you want to move, select edit>move, then go to the folder you want to move the file to and select edit>paste from the toolbar on the top. And don't feel bad for asking questions. I found Astro to not be particularly easy to learn.

ok, so some reason i can not figure this out. my phone says it has 2.1 on it, can i maybe not root on that? i did all the steps on the easy root, and even used the 1 click root and still nothing. can you tell me how to download straight to the sd card? i can find the folder in astro.

ugh! so frustrating i was expecting this to be so easy

It is late for me tonight, but I can sure try to be here tomorrow night sometime between 6 and 10 PST. Play a bit with Astro and become more familiar with it. Most likely your ROM is in a folder called download, but it could be anywhere. If you did the one step root to completion you should have Amon-Ra recovery available to you. Turn off your phone, then while holding the volume up button turn it back on. If it boots to a screen with a bunch of green text, that is Amon-Ra's recovery, which is where you need to be to flash a new ROM, do nand backups, do wipes and many more things. If you do not get that screen, you probably are not rooted. Experiment with that for tonight, and I will try to help you more tomorrow, if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
