Accessories I Found the Slimmest Car Mount for the Evo

they don't appear to sell just the air vent mount :/ but then you'd need the piece to clip the phone too.

i like the air vent mount too (since it's illegal in CA to mount it on the windshield and I don't want a silly looking beanbag). the air vent mount looks pretty secure, like there's a rubber/foam piece that'll secure it to the vent instead of having it slide around.

I picked one up at Fry's for $24.99 but does come with a PIA mail in rebate for an additional $10. But I think its worth the effort.

It works very well and my evo has one of those thin rubbery cases on it. I tried a thicker silicone case and it does not work as it makes the phone too large.

So i take it attaching it with an extended battery on the phone is out of the question?

I couldn't find a good picture of how the vent mount works, so can anyone let me know if they think it would mount securely onto a vent like this one? (Pontiac G6)

I received my Kensington mount yesterday from buy.com. The mount is very well made. I have the Evo in the Seidio Active case and at first, it didn't fit quite right. The clips didn't really wrap around the edges very well.

However, I noticed that there were sticky rubber pads on the inside of each clip. I removed them both to make more room for the phone + case. You don't need those protective pads anyway if your phone is in a case.

Well, it fits much better now. I wouldn't say it's perfect because you can quickly knock it out if you hit it from behind, but it's pretty snug. I've tested driving with the phone and it's secure. I'm using the vent clips in my 2002 impala...no problems. I don't think they will work with the vents that have deep grills like the previous pictures. You'll just have to use the windshield suction mount.

I love how you can rotate from portrait to landscape easily. I'm constantly switching from both modes and this option is critical.

Overall for $12.99AR from buy.com, you can't beat it!

the active case is thicker than the innocase right?

do you think the phone will stay in place if you go over bumps?

are the sticky pads something that i can get later on and put them back in, pretty much are they replaceable or did kensingston use some special material?

Yes, the Seidio Active case is thicker because it has a 2 layer case with a silicone inner shell and a hard outer shell

The pads are just thin rubber with some sticky adhesive on one side. The clips actually have a slight indentation where they go. I saved mine, but you could easily just buy any other rubber material and cut it to fit the clip.

I may post a youtube video with the evo in the active case inside the kensington mount... and shake it vigorously for everyone to gawk at. I would also record the phone mounted while driving over speed bumps in my neighborhood. Let me know if that would be helpful and how fast you want me to fly over the bumps!

Is 50 MPH asking too much?

Hahahah!!! Yeah, that might be pushing it.

I spent the afternoon ripping out the dash of my impala to rewire for my aux audio cable and micro usb cable charger. I ended up sticking the vent mount between the upper dash and stereo area... similar to what someone else did. It's very secure and I'm happy. I just wish my Seidio Active case wasn't falling apart...the rubber film is now peeling away at the corners...but that's for another thread.

Anyone know how to embed images into this thread? I've never done it before.

I'll post a youtube video tomorrow driving recklessly around town.

Mine showed up in the mail today - Killer piece, exactly as the OP described. The side arms have actual hinges and are spring loaded, so they shouldn't wear out for a long time.

I rock my phone naked, so it fits nice and snug. The vents on my Mazda aren't beefy enough for me, so I use the windshield mount, and have the arm resting on the dash. It's super sturdy this way, and the suction cup is very low also.

I'm going to use it with an app called Trackmate at an open track day, and I feel confident it will hold just fine at over 1.00G...

Thanks OP.

someone said he could use the active case with it after he gutted the foam pads inside the grippers. i myself bought the mount to try from Frys and it would not hold my Innocase II with the foam pads inside. I wasn't going to try and gut the foam pads, the fit did not seem comfortable to me. I'm glad because I'm using a cheaper DIY that works better for me. I posted a thread titled $3 DIY mount

i wanted to buy this but i dont think i can utilize the vent mounts with my car

the driver vent it too close to the steering wheel and the passenger vent is just too far.

windshield mount is not an option as i hate them. dashboard is preferable but cant find any. might have to resort to sticking it on the dashboard somehow.
