Root new to forum and need some help

just wanna say hello to everyone first off.

now to business...

i have a rooted moto droid (easyroot app) running 2.2 update one and a macintosh computer. used setcpu to overclock to 800mhz.

now, here is what i would like to do. back up my phone in its current state and overclock it to 1ghz-1.2ghz if possible. maybe extend my battery life because pre-2.2 update i had 20-26 hours between charges and now i'm down to 6-12 hours.

here is the problem, this is all pretty new to me and i dont want to destroy my phone or brick it. im a pretty fast learner but im not gonna lie, i follow simply worded instructions the best

. i searched the forums but its all reading like jiberish to me and everything seems really spread out with alot of BS in between actual answers.

if anyone could help me, aim me towards the proper thread, write me some step by step instructions, tell me to #$%@ off, anything lol.

Welcome to the forums!
Well, it sounds like you're ambitious enough... so here's my recommendation:

Download ROM Manager from the market and flash ClockworkMod Recovery. It has a habit of not sticking on the first install, so then scroll down ROM Manager and flash alternate recovery (SPRecovery). THEN go back up and flash ClockworkMod Recovery AGAIN.

Turn off the phone and then power it back on while holding down the x button on the keyboard. You SHOULD go into ClockworkMod Recovery. If you see a big triangle and exclamation point, reboot and repeat the whole flashing process.

From the Recovery console you can do a nandroid backup of your phone's current state. VERY important to backup before flashing ROMs or kernels.
Let us know when you're done with that and then we'll see what your ultimate goal is.

let me rephrase that. is nandroid a stand alone app for computers or is it on the phone and you just store the backup on the computer? this is where i get lost.

Nandroid backs up ON YOUR PHONE, not to the Mac. It will create a ClockworkMod folder on your SD Card. It's all built in

If you want, you can always connect the USB cable and copy the files to your computer as a failsafe.

ok, followed your instructions and after a few attempts got it all straight.

now, about overclocking this thing. whats with kernels? what are they? which one should i use? where do i get it and how do i install it? hahahahaha sorry im full of questions today.

A kernel is basically the foundation on which the ROM operates. It controls basic functions, as well as (of course) clock speed.

ChevyNo1 has kernels available, P3Droid has them, a number of kernels exist but here's the thing: no two Droids are alike in how they respond to the same kernel. What works great on my Droid may throw yours into a bootloop (which is NOT a cereal

).

I would recommend loading several Froyo kernels on your SD Card, then start experimenting as to which one works best. I have found that the P3 250-1000 Low Voltage MHz kernel is stable and has great battery life. Your mileage may vary.

BEFORE you flash a kernel, make SURE you can access recovery through x+power, not ROM Manager! It will be the only way to recover your phone if something goes wrong!

NOTE: I have never tried to load an overclock kernel with the stock 2.2 and am not sure how that will work... anyone else want to chime in?

used the chevyno1 1.1ghz ulv kernel on my stock 2.2 update 1 and my phone seems to be running alot faster then it was. it used to take a second or 2 for the gallery to load, now its up almost instantly.

im gonna run it for the day and see if its stable and how the battery life works out. thanks for all the help and i will let you know how it all works out.

next question, quick and easy. i just got the notification for the ota 2.2 update 2. should i install it? will i have to reroot and do all this over again? can i even use easyroot with it?

You will lose root and.... no you can not use easyroot.

ok, all is working well on my droid now.

i think im ready to try a custom rom, i like the looks of chevyno1's ss 4.7 but every time i try to download it though rom manger it fails. is there a way to download it via computer and slap it on the SD card?

just download your rom of choice to PC and the transfer to you phones SD card. Then in rom manager choose install from SD.
