Help Froyo 3G problems

Mine updated to 2.2 early this morning, and after the update it had no data connection thru VW. I didn't pay much attention to it at all. I just now noticed this afternoon...no email notifications which I thought was odd. Upon checking nothing else was getting updates either/syncing. I turned the mobile connection OFF then ON, and it said it was trying to connect but that's it. It doesn't seem to be able to connect to the network. So I decided to try the airplane mode ON then OFF, and this got the mobile data connection working again.

I just did a reboot and it did it again. It says under Mobile Network..."Turning On...." but is never turing itself on. I did the airplane mode ON and OFF again, and this again got the data connection working.

It appears to be a software issue turning the data radio on or something.

Started happening to my phone today, 2 days after the update.... Restarted and it seems to be fine, for now

hi, its vince with the slap chop.

make sure to give airplane mode enough time to kick in. sometimes it takes my phone anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute to go into airplane mode. you'll know because the signal bars turn into a little plan in the upper bar.

THEN try turning it back off.

works like magic for me.
i was trying to rush it at first, thats when it didnt work for me.
gave it a bit of time to kick in and it worked.

This didn't work on my phone. I turned on airplane mode. Stared at it for a minute. Went off and took a dump. Answered some emails. Talked to some of my co-workers. Came back and the mobile network was still stuck at "turning on". VZW shipped me a replacement that seems to have the exact same issue once I upgraded it to Froyo. On this one, toggling airplane mode appears to work. I may just set up Tasker to toggle airplane mode every time I turn the phone on rather than have VZW ship me yet another phone that will have the same issue.

I think I might have fixed it. I did another factory reset and I had to activate my phone again. So far so good. And for swype I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but whenever I turn my phone off then on I have to redo the process

The Swype thing is a known issue. I think they said you can just change the keyboard, then switch back the swype keyboard to get working so you don't have to uninstall-reinstall. I doubt this fixes the issue with the reboot part. They should be working on a fix I would imagine.

I sent VW support an email yesterday on this, and the reply I got back today was to first try soft reboot, then a hard reboot if that didn't work. So they really aren't much help.

I don't want to do a hard reboot if it's not going to work like the original poster mentioned in his case.

The airplane mode on and off is my current solution, which I was first to point out yesterday thank you.:D

UPDATE: I just updated the PRL with the *228. After it rebooted it was connected to the mobile network with no issues. I did another power cycle to check things and it it was not connecting again. Did another power cycle and removed the battery, and the mobile data was connected. Did one more power cycle to check, and it was not working again.

I got a reply back from VW support and their reply was to first try a soft reboot, then a hard reboot if that didn't work. So far I believe in this thread and another, that two people have reported that the hard reset doesn't resolve this issue. I don't want to do this if it doesn't work.

This is the exact same issue I was having. On the last phone toggling airplane mode didn't work. On this one it seems to. Unfortunately Tasker is tied to my other phone so I need to figure out how to get it untied so I can toggle airplane mode on boot up. It's a frustrating work around.

Edit: Airplane mode sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It's frustrating.

I had the same issue. Try *228 option 2 update roaming network. It worked for me.

Hey mutantcheese....have you attempted to restart your phone several times AFTER doing the PRL update? Please reboot your phone a few times and let me know. The PRL update worked upon the initial reboot for me, but if I restart the phone again, the mobile data doesn't work again...it repeats this cycle of working and not working with each phone reboot.

My problems started a week ago. Verizon sent me a replacement phone which I got today with 2.1 on it. I activated it and no-go - same problem. So I called Verizon and the CSR and I waited while my new, replacement phone downloaded the OTA, installed it and still no go. So he submitted a trouble ticket and told me someone would be in touch within 48 hours.

I think my experience rules out hardware and 2.2 and points to a network issue.

I'm on the phone with VZW right now. Did you have the issue before you put on 2.2? My issue only started after 2.2.

Last night my roommate had this issue on her stock 2.2
Tried all of the above except updating the tower info.
In the morning my stock 2.1 also had the issue.
After leaving for work and getting away from the towers near my home both of our phones returned to normal.
We are directly between two towers and Google maps will show my location bounce between the two.

Just FYI, I have had this problem for quite some time now. I've tried every trick in the book, which includes all of the above. It all started when I flashed to Froyo and the 2.X radio back when Froyo first became available for the DI in SkyRaider's 2.0 ROM, sometime in July if I remember correctly.

What is so frustrating is that Verizon won't acknowledge there's a problem, and I've never seen "ihtfp69" (SkyRaider's developer) acknowledge that there is a problem. Apparently nobody wants to deal with it. What I find interesting is that not everyone is having this problem.

Anyway, switching in and out of airplane mode is the ONLY thing that gets my 3G to return when it goes out.

I updated to 2.2 this morning and now i can only have 3g or wifi but not both. Is this normal? My 3g will not work until i disable or have no wifi, which is all and good i suppose. I was thinking, it may be a way to make sure you use wifi b/w when available instead of their (vzw)bandwidth. just a thought.

I have the disappearing 3g problem since receiving the OTA update yesterday.

I think this is what as been FCing Trapster for me since the update.

One additional "feature" of the loss of 3g is that if I try to use voice recognition to add text to a SMS, I immediately get a popup message that there is a problem with the network. Very strange.

For me turning the phone off and on has always fixed the problem.

Are you effing kidding me?

I am seriously at a loss. Do i just return this POS and go buy another phone?

I went through this shit with the BB Storm, issues NEVER got fixed, they just released a new phone to replace it and expected us to pay for it.

Personally, I'm willing to give VZW the benefit of the doubt at first as it would seem to be either a software issue or an issue with their towers. In either case, a fix would be possible it would seem. I don't know what other phone to buy myself. To me the DX is way too big and I don't like the external keyboard on a phone so the Droid would seem to be out of the question as well. If this doesn't get fixed I may look into rooting/downgrading.

I'm on the phone with VZW right now. Did you have the issue before you put on 2.2? My issue only started after 2.2.

My problem with my original DINC started after I applied the RUU last Friday. However, Thursday of this week (yesterday) I recieved a replacement DINC and it had 2.1 on it. The problem existed with this replacemnt 2.1 phone right out of the gate. While on the phone with Verizon the OTA update was applied and the problem persisted.

So, at least in my experience, it doesn't seem to be phone, Android version (2.1 vs 2.2) nor method of applying 2.2 (i.e. OTA vs. RUU) specific.

I have accepted OTA, and not experienced loss of data.

What can i do to see if i am experiencing what yall are?

You'll see that you have no 3g. If you open a browser, pages won't display. Basically anything depending on data doesn't work. Typically if your phone has the problem, you can turn it off and turn it on again and the problem will go away. If you turn it off and turn it on again, the problem returns. Toggling airplane mode fixes it. Personally, I think I'm going to look into how to downgrade and spend my three day weekend downgrading to 2.1. 2.1 just works for me. 2.2 has been incredibly buggy.
