Root Why I don't Like Root

This is not meant to be me complaining, whining, or anything of that sort, just my opinion of root, I keep reading "OMG I love root, it's the best" so I'm offering the other side.

1) I have to re-download all my apps and everytime I load a new rom- I know they're SUPPOSED to sync, and maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, but even with astro backing everything up I still have to reset up everything on the apps i download
2) the new Gallery- takes so long to load, and crashes
3) my Camera now crashes my phone after about a minute of picture taking
4) No in browser flash support- yes, I can watch videos on youtube, but that doesn't help when I'm browsing the internet
5) Videos in text: I can no longer watch video or listen to sound clips my friends text me. this is by-far, my biggest problem with rooting my phone.

Yup, I know, I rooted at my own risk; it's my own fault. Looking at my phone now though, I really don't see any benefit to rooting it in the first place. Yes, it runs a little bit faster, and with setcpu, my battery life lasts a little longer, but those two things are heavily out weighed by the problems I'm having. Looking back now, I would have much rather not rooted and kept my phone stock. In conclusion; think strongly about rooting before doing so. I thought I did my fair share of research before rooting, but had I known about the text, camera, and gallery, I would have not even thought about rooting.

will it set everythin back to the way it was when i first got the phone, including stock apps and all?

I am not going to argue with you about the values of rooting your phone - I do think that people really should understand that there are risks to rooting the phone and, of course, it is your phone. However, there are root ROMs that do not have any of the problems that you list - Ivan's Official 1.0 ROM and Plain Jane T2 are both stock HTC Eris builds with root functions and some rather unimportant default features turned off or removed (all easily readded).

I'm not sure which ROM you are running, but there is no reason why you have to lose root, have a better phone that stock, and have absolutely none of the problems that you list.

And, for number 1, there is an app called Titanium Backup which can very easily backup and then restore your apps, with your data and the market links intact (so they will continue to update after new updates are added to the market). It's a good idea not to restore system data, so you may have to change your defaults, but, once you have a ROM set up the way that you like, you can start the phone in recovery, create a Nandroid backup, and go back to that ROM exactly as it was set up if you want to switch back.

Kaos Froyo is still in development. I think it's pretty stable for what I need, but I think that the Eris camera is junk anyway, so I rarely use it, and I am not all that interested on Flash content or YouTube on a phone. If I was, though, I'd want one of those above. (I'd start with xtrROM if you like Kaos Froyo otherwise, as it loses the Sense launcher.)

Or, of course, unroot and go back to stock.

I argued against rooting for a long time to my other friends with android phones until I decided to try it out. Here are the benefits I've noticed in rooting:

- Massive increase in speed. I did not even want to make a phone call because I was never sure if it would actually dial the dam number.
- Wireless tether. This is just awesome.
- To restore apps back the way they were just use titanium backup. It saves apps and settings so everything is back the way it was after you've updated your rom. I must have flashed a new rom every hour the first weekend I rooted my phone. Now I use the donate version of titanium which is way faster than the free version.

While you certainly aren't REQUIRED to like root, before going back to stock I too would recommend trying a different ROM. I believe you'll find that you like your phone much better with the 'proper' ROM, some of the problems you reported are known issues with the Kaos ROM (not knocking Kaos, he's doing great work with his ROM - it's my second favorite). Doogald gave some fine suggestions for alternate ROMS, I personally am a fan of the xtrROM for a nice stable problem free phone.

I agree completely with this. I know a lot of people here are fans of froyo but when I decided to root my wife's eris I wanted something that would just work. Now I'm not saying that froyo doesn't but with my wife not being tech savvy I needed something with as few bugs as possible. With that said IMO any ROM that uses the Eris' base as a start is going to be the most stable and from reading has always appeared that way to me. Now it may not have the best features or the fastest ROM but they work. All the Roms listed above are Eris based and not hero based.

Seriously though, how great is it that we get to talk about options and different methods and choices of rooting? It really wasn't that long ago that you only had one way to root and there were only a very few custom ROMs (and Froyo was a pipedream).

Now, there are so many ROMs out there (and how many Froyo ROMs exists? lots). And now, even though some sites are saying that VZW will not release 2.2 for the Eris, we've already got it if we want it.

And who'll stop the devs from creating a Gingerbread ROM? No one.

Root FTW. My two-cents.

I'll add one more comment - the other posters are aware of this, but didn't mention it front and center.

xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1 has Flash (10.1 iirc), and it works with the browser. Given that you mentioned videos, that's the one I would recommend to you. It's a Android 2.1 ROM, but very fast, and with most of the Sense UI that is familiar to you from using a Stock Phone.

If you were happy with a stock 2.1 phone, there is no doubt in my mind you will be happier with xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1

FWIW, I do believe that xtrROM 4.0.6.1 has Flash 10.1 in the browser as well.

I feel like such a moron for not knowing this. I used the one click method for rooting a week or so ago, and im currently running kaos froyo v30. I'm looking at running xtrROM4.0.6.1 and it says in the installation instructions that "YOU MUST HAVE A ROOTED PHONE WITH THE AMON_RA RECOVERY PARTITION"

Not a clue if I have that or what it means

for some reason my facebook contacts won't sync. I go to settings, and click sync now, the icon shows up for about a second, then disapears...and nothing happens

Seems like ever ROM I read about some says it's great but this or that doesn't work right. So I just rooted and flashed the engtools3., the overclock kernel, OC'd to 710. Got Superuser access, SetCPU, Wireless Teether and Titanium Backup. OC, Teether and delete stock apps while still on Sense UI. Works for me and don't worry about the ROMs.

chaos - if you use your Talk app, holla at me at es0tericha0s@gmail.com and I'll see if I can't help you set up your phone where you can realize the pleasures of being rooted. I run kaosfroyo and it's way faster and has less bugs in it than when I was stock. Not saying it will work that way for you, but sometimes the bugs are more dependent on the phone than the rom. Anyway, I've been rooted for a while now and have tried pretty much 4 out of every 5 roms out there and have a lot of experience with setting stuff up. Including resetting of your apps and stuff. If not, no skin off my back, just throwing it out there for you. Sometimes you just have to give things a try before you give up on them.

It all depends on the rom you use. Only Froyo Roms reinstall your apps, but it doesn't have flash. Ivan's has flash but you have to reinstall your apps. But you complaints about root aren't really about root, but the roms you are using. I suggest trying Ivan's 1.0 before unrooting and I guarantee you will like it. It is just like stock, but with the benefits of root. If you stick with Ivan's, you will have flash and everything stock has, plus it runs much faster. You will also be able to delete the stock apps that you don't want, saving you space for more apps that you want.
