returning phone due to Froyo

How about how os4 slowed down iPhone 3g and 3gs' down to a crawl? Apple messes up updates too. Maybe you should just get an iPhone and complain about it on macrumors. Verizon will fix their mistakes in due time just like apple.

a new OS slowing down 2 year old hardware is completely different than Froyo breaking hardware only months old

yeah god forbid a company I hand $100 every month actually communicates with me.

god forbid you spend 20 minutes a day learning how to get the most out of your $200 investment that you pay $100/month to maintain

you know what, "being about choice and control" is fine as an option. but at a very basic level an update shouldn't ****ing break my phone. you can't just handwave that away and say "well android is great b/c you can spend a couple hours figuring out how to fix it". that's not a feature!! that's putting out a shitty product under the guise of openness.

The update didn't break your phone, something YOU did to it (whether it was an app you had installed or something to do with how you applied the update) affected the outcome of the OTA update.

The OS is not a shitty product. The phone is not a shitty product. All smart phones require you to invest time and effort. You get out of it what you put in. You did something to the phone, and now it doesn't work right.

I already told you that the best option for you is to get a replacement with 2.1 and root it. Once you do that, you can put whatever OS build you want on the thing. Also, it will let you wipe things the factory reset wont.

2.2 did not kill my phone, it made it 10 times better. I like working on tech things. If every Joe-6-pack could use Android I doubt I would want it. The iphone feels super dumbed down for me. Its like living in a small studio apartment, you are trapped in one room. I like a lot of rooms and even a few hidden passageways behind the book shelves.

I've been in the tech industry for a long time and I know that there is nothing man made that works correctly 100% of the time. If you want a powerful mobile OS like android you need to be prepared to fix the little issues that come up.

I love how people are saying 2.2 is causing everyone so many problems. Only a few reported problems have occurred here, and that's just because most people are only going to post when they have a problem. I think we'd all get pissed if thread after thread was "GOT ME SOME FROYO AND IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!"

This all ignores the fact that it's an OS update. It's 2010. Technology runs our lives, but it is by no means perfect. I challenge you to find me one, just ONE, OS update on any computer, phone, tablet, etc. that worked flawlessly for every single person who upgraded. I already know how that one will go...

Now man up!

You know what's great? People screamed and cried and moaned for months "I want 2.2!! I want 2.2!! Where the hell is my 2.2!?!?"

Now we have it and people are still bitching.

I am seriously about to just give up on andoid forums. Not because of anything on this specific forum, just people on forums in general. Never happy, always whinning.

His frustrations are understandable, IMO.

Actually i felt the exact same way. I told my wife of the bugs that some people were having, and i explained that i will be accepting the OTA, as will she, and if there are any of these bugs im walking into the store. Let them do a factory reset, if the bugs are still there i will be walking out with a new phone.

I refuse to troubleshoot the issues if they are caused by an update from a company so large.

ESPECIALLY since it took so long to roll it out, you think the QA dept would have weeded out every last bug. Instead they were figuring out how best to integrate more crapware and how to stop us from killing it lol.

Luckily, my OTA went smooth and im having a good experience. But Had it not, i would have made this exact same thread.

There are some pretty serious bugs being reported. I am as techie as they come, and its not stuff i would want to tinker with, especially as its on my phone which is in my hands literally 20 hours a day.

Granted not everyone has the bugs, but the people who do have them must feel like shit about their purchase. Its not like they rooted and it went abd now they have a brick. They got told by VZW an update was available, they hit OK, next thing no 3G, or no speaker, or 3hr battery life, etc.

Not cool

I think it's horrible that Verizon would push out an update that effed up my (and so many other phones).

Customers should not be forced to due a factory reset to get things working right. And, after doing a factory reset, my phone still isn't working right!

I shouldn't have to spend hours on forums figuring out whats wrong, why, and how to fix it. this stuff should just work, and why in the world Verizon would push out an update that caused so many problems is incomprehensible

anyways, I think Im going to the store this afternoon to at least try getting a replacement, and if not a different phone

You should have done the hard re-set before you flashed the update. You probably had an app or something on your phone that wasn't compatible with 2.2 , thus the problems. I wiped my phone before I updated and do not have a single problem with my phone. Most custom roms and upgrades to smartphones usually suggest wiping your phone before you flash an upgrade. It is always best to start with a clean slate. I've been doing that for ten years and never had a problem. If you don't wipe your phone, you are dumping one OS on top of another any just asking for problems. :)

And I laugh at how people will go through all the effort of pitching a bitch fit but they won't exercise a little self help. Why not cut the umbilical cord to Verizon and learn to fix something on your own? And even end up with a superior product when all is said and done?

No, it's not for everyone, but just that someone is here on the forums indicates that they can handle it. I may be biased as I always do my own computer work, do my own car work, fix my own appliances, and write my own software so I'm dependent on no one. But this is really an easy fix...

The frustrations are understandable. Anytime I buy something that doesn't work perfectly, I get annoyed.

That said, it is part of our world. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is perfect. Every product out there has units on the shelves that don't work as they're supposed to. That is why there are warranties.

Being frustrated is one thing, but to say the entire update is a failure because a select group of people are experiencing issues is going too far, IMO.

I feel bad OP is dealing with these issues, but that's life. My HP laptop died on me minutes before a very important exam. My wife's Macbook crashed on her during an even more important exam. My phone since being updated to 2.2 has, for the most part, been awesome, but froze and rebooted while streaming audio earlier.

If we are going to use technology, we need to learn to deal with these issues rather than simply blame the company that provides it. Every piece of software ever written contains bugs, no matter how much QA is performed. That is why there are updates. If we waited for software to be 100% perfect, we'd never get it. That's too big of a price to pay if you ask me when the alternative is not so bad. Learn to troubleshoot and if after you feel you've given it a fair shot it still doesn't work, see what customer/technical service can do.

... but at a very basic level an update shouldn't break my phone.....

I see the issue here. VZ just needs to come over and test on your phone to make sure it works for you. yea..right.

I get that you are frustrated, but you just drew the short straw is all. I have never seen a software update for anything, in any way shape or form in 20 years of using electronics, that did not mess things up for someone. Every single game patch, software patch, os patch, update, upgrade, tweak, fix, and change. Something always happens to someone. In fact, thanks to the large availability of such things, it happens to quite a lot of people ( though only a small percentage. )

You think you got shafted because you have a problem with a $500 phone? 1 in 20 of the new $230,000 ferrari 458s are catching fire!

Call tech support, get your phone replaced, log your complaint in a proper manner, and move on. There's no need for the crusade.

well that is what I said I was going to do in my OP.

I don't see where it says this:

CPU running full scream ahead, I did a factory reset, didnt install a thing besides a battery meter and systempanel lite, and my CPU is running between 500 and 850, mostly in the 700's
If you're using System Panel to tell you how fast your CPU is running, I think it's system panel that's causing it to run that fast. Download Temp+CPU v2 and add as a widget to your home screen. When I did that, it showed that the CPU slowed down just like it's supposed to.

I'm just wondering where along the way we lost the sense of personal responsibility.

When did it become normal to just accept what big brother tells you without doing your own fact checking and prep work? When the first rumors of 2.2 came, I started researching what course of action I wanted to take. I don't see how smart phones are any different from managing finances or deciding how to proceed in a relationship. If you don't do your prep work and research, you are taking big risks.

Quick question to the OP...

What exactly are your problems? Almost everyone has stated that if you did the OTA and you allowed the 2.2 OS to install on top of the 2.1 OS than it has been known to cause problems (due to the stacking of files and some apps & such not being properly updated). Most people have advised to download the zip and wipe your phone then install so that it is a clean install.

In any event, no you shouldnt have to do anything...especially buy an Android. This is open-source software, bugs have and will always exists, but all bugs also will eventually be fixed (even if new ones are then added). If you think Apple or any other OS/Phone/Manufacturer doesn't have problems, your kidding yourself. Apple has had many software issues, Spring has also botched a lot of OTAs (remember the Evo Brick OTA?)

I dunno, it doesnt seem like your phone really has fatal errors, it seems like it just isnt what you expected or isn't what your used to.

what does personal responsibility have to do with this?

let's recap:

1) I have a fully functional phone that is working fine
2) Verizon tells me that it needs to be updated. it keeps telling me this every half hour until I accept it
3) after the update my phone battery drains much faster and charges slower

and somehow this is my fault? I didn't go out of my way to root some rom. I didn't step out of line and use the RUU. I just did exactly what Verizon told/forced me to do.

and now my phone is worse for it and I have to spend time trying to fix it. this has nothing to do with personal responsibility, it has to do with releasing and forcing out a flawed update to thousands of people

How do you know the people who complained about it being so slow to release are the same ones complaining about it being released and "sucking"? I personally have been excited to get it (have not yet), but have not said anything on this forum about "WAAAAAAAAH WHERE IS IT?!?!" but I can guarantee i'll probably be like the OP if I do get it and it causes more problems than it solves. Speaking of whining, why whine about people whining...that seems counter-productive.
