Accessories Review of Arkon Mega Grip car mount w/DX

I take it the tubing helps hold the unit in place? I have a similar mount for GPS and found it to be too loose allowing the GPS to move around. Were did you get the tubing?

Yeah, the tubing makes it really grippy. It does not move at all.

I used what I could find at work in a pinch, an electrical cord with the wires pulled out. But fuel line from the auto parts store, shrink tube from the electronics store, or air line from the fish/pet store should work as well. All of which I had at home, but I wanted to try it while I was thinking about it and the extension cord was all I could find at work.

PS...I now own page 2 :D

Got mine Saturday as I was about to take an hour drive. So I sat by the mailbox for 20 minutes trying to figure out how the vent clips work cuz I was too lazy to read the instructions. So I stuck it on my windshield. Nice grip. Works very nice, I just need to figure out a better way to get the wires to/from the phone without them tangling over my steering wheel. In CA, we can't stick it anywhere besides the bottom left or right corners of the WS. I might use the disk on the dash or the vent clips...but I have to say this, $20 well spent.

I think what you are asking for is if it is sold only as a cradle, to which the answer is no. However, you can always email Arkon and ask if they do. It takes them about 2-3 days to respond though. The balls socket is dependent upon whether you want a gooseneck, windshield, or vent mount. For the money and reliability, id buy from amazon directly(not the 3rd party sellers on Amazon) from this link
Amazon.com: Arkon Universal Windshield with Dashboard and Vent Mount for Smartphones and PDAs (Black): Cell Phones & Service
You can always sell the parts you dont use on ebay, etc.

Just a quick question there is no option to buy the holder and just the ball socket correct (so I can use with my garmin stand)??

Amazon.com: Arkon Mega Grip car mount+

I have to buy Arkon Universal Windshield with Dashboard and Vent Mount for Smartphones and PDAs (Black) 14.95?

I have a Garmin windshield mount and figured there MUST be a cradle/dock that can just pop onto the ball socket. The closest I found was this and I figure it was $10, so for $5 more, why not get the whole set and have options (like the vent mount, which I have found immensley useful).

I took the mount apart to see if I could do this and I don't think there is enough room to do this. As you can see from the pic, there are 4 "troughs"(for lack of a better word) on the one side of the cover. One of those troughs is needed for the mechanism that quick releases the grip. However, since you orient your phone with the feet on the mount up top, one of the spring mechanisms would get in the way. The only other option is to glue a magnet on the other side but the Arkon logo makes the surface area not level. It works but its not pretty and to me, its just an odd fix. My suggestion would be to use Dock Simulator instead as this would eliminate the need to alter the mount in any way.

What is a dock simulator? Also, why can't I use the Car Dock App on the phone instead of worrying about a magnet? Is Car Dock App the simulator you are referring to?

Yeah Dock Simulator is an app. The only reason why I installed it was that you can choose Home, Car, and Undock all in one screen. Also, correct me if i'm wrong guys, but I dont think there is a HomeDock app from the app drawer(the only way you can access it is by putting it in a dock that triggers to HomeDock or using a magnet) so that app helps in that regard. So in short, it's not necessary, just covenient to have.

Is the purpose of the dock simulator just to enable car dock app that comes preinstalled?

Contact Arkon. MegaGrip by itself is $10. All you need is T-Tab connector plate with a ball joint mount which they might be able to sell separately.

Or better yet, get http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Universal-Windshield-Dashboard-Smartphones/dp/B003ELOOZO/ref=pd_cp_cps_1 which is $5 more (a total for everything is $15) and comes with that T-Tab, suction mount, and air-vent mount. That is a best deal!!!

It's currently 19.99 with free shipping. As an alternative you can pay 14.95 with free super saver shipping if you spend 25 dollars

I just order the Arkon mount on Amazon. I also ordered the bike mount. Amazing that you can get the Arkon kit with 3 types of mounts for 15 dollars and the bike mount by itself is about 13 dollars. For seven dollars more I ordered it with a weather proof case which will work with my Garmin GPS. Not sure I will use the Garmin instead of the phone on the bike but for 7 dollars more what the hell.

I don't see anyone with the hard screw down mount.Does the suction cup mount stick to the disc that tight that I wouldn't have to worry about it. I want to run screws down for security.

What off road rally race are you competing in? ;)

The screw mount is overkill. A beanbag mount is more than secure enough, and won't serve as permanent reminder to anyone walking by that you might have something worth stealing.

I just wanted to make sure it doesn't move.My work truck is a fire truck/utility pickup. I have a flat spot that I am dieing to put a mount on but didn't know if the suction cup mount would be stong enough sticking to flat metal. It does come with a suction cup disk right?;) Running lights and siren to a call and having my phone come off the dash or center console wouldn't be good. I will get a pic of the spot I am talking to show you before I order. I also have room where I could do the goose neck seat mount but I don't know how tall the goose neck mount is?

I believe Arkon also has a bean bag with a safety anchor hook that you can stick on to the dashboard. If you choose to use dashboard to mount DX instead of windshield/suction than bean bag is a better and cleaner option. That safety anchor hook will add more security and if sticking it to the dashboard is not enough you can probably drive a screw through it :) Doesn't get any more secure than that!
