Why can't these phone companies be more like Apple, stick to one design that works and just upgrade the inner hardware and screen every few years. I love my Eris now that I rooted it, and I don't want to switch phones becuase I like it's form factor, the design is great, I want the same phone 2 years from now, just better hardware/camera +flash.

^^ there is a certain merit to that approach, but luckily we're to the point now where almost every phone is so powerful and useable that you actually can choose between different phones with different features/form factors that *don't* suck.

I save 15 minutes a day by using instapaper/google mobilizers/mobile web because even on 3g the full web is just a waste of time. I'm with Jobs on this one. Flash can go right to hell. I only use it for youtube and everything else (ads) is blocked on all my devices.

Seriously, I don't even browse the "full" web on my PC.

I haven't been on the forums in a while, but I stopped by to check out the Eris thread.

I got the Eris as my first Android phone, and I loved it. I loaded the leak v1 (not by any means a programmers accomplishment, but something new for me) and it was exciting. I recommended the Eris to a few people at work, and they loved it too. The pics were great, and the video was good as well.

I upgraded to the X in July, and as my second Android phone, I love it as well. It's a powerhouse, and is speeder than the Eris in almost every way.

But...

The Eris will always be my favorite Android phone, even when a 4.5" beast with 3.3 (Jujubee?) and a quad core processor comes out. Not just because of something as simple as nostalgia, but because the phone WORKED. Silent call bug be dammed, the Eris is awesome.

That's my story. :)

Correct. You see, the Eris take three to four times as long to render pages and has no flash 10.1 support. Google has no content on its webpage so anythin will load it fast. Try loading androidforums on an eris. It so slow. The Incredbile easily saves me 10 seconds. Plus navigating webpages is so frustrating with the eris.

You know, I hate the Eris as much as you do, but wow, I think you exaggerate a bit too much.

Well, you are banned, so not much to say now. But these guys seem fine with it. I think I've put up with enough crap with the phone that I can still help out. But yeah, it's definitely a time of my life I want to forget, owning the Eris. And not just because of the phone. :(

Hmm i think hes just mad his wife got a Droid X and is actually comparing an eris to a Droid X and saying their both fast and that his Eris is better looking because he doesnt have a Droid X.

Am I mad that she has the X and I don't? Not in the least. I could easily try to upgrade a month or two early or add another line just as she did in order to get one.

But wait until he actually gets a Droid X he will probably be shooting his Eris down with a shotgun saying that he cant believe he stayed with that slow piece of junk. Past owner of Eris here. Can't believe i had that phone.

As far as this comment is concerned: My wife and I just drove over 600 miles one-way to visit a family member over the Labor Day weekend. We were on the road for over 11 hours each way, including stopping once each way to eat, gas stops, and a small detour to a house we once owned. I drove half the time, she drove the other half. I also compared the speed of the two every night after she went to bed while both were plugged into the same electrical outlet.

I had plenty of time to test the X against the Eris yet again side-by-side, running the EXACT SAME APPS. Again, I am 100% satisfied that I have my Eris. While the X has the "Gee Whiz" effect, I am quite pleased that the right Eris can still hold its own against just about any phone released, new or old. I could not tell a difference when I went to launch an app, get directions, send or receive texts, or just about any other test I ran.

Yes, I am aware that the X has a much faster processor. Yes, I am aware that the X has greater memory.

My initial comparison was just meant to relay my experiences with both phones over the course of one evening. Over the course of the trip, my initial feeling about these phones are the same. I realize that some people think I may be out of my mind, jealous, or a little of both, but nothing could be further from the truth. While I am glad that my wife has a phone that makes her happy, I continue to be happy with my phone. Isn't that what's it's all about anyway, being happy with the phone you have?

Motorola's "anti-ROM DRM" is enough for me to swear off anything they put out. I don't care if it can be rooted eventually, the fact that they put forth the extra effort to force me into using it the way THEY intended is enough for me to add them to my "Do not buy from this company list".

I'd rather go back to my old w810i.

That's the way to stick it to em.

"Screw your superior chipset. I'll suffer with my lag rather than give you money."

Get over it. eFuse has been cracked and there are custom ROMs running around now.

You want a whore of a phone that'll let you have your way with it? Get a Samsung.

I don't have much lag but, I will not buy a Motorola no matter how good the rest of the phone is. Same reason I don't buy games from Ubisoft; I don't support anti-consumer DRM.

I apologize that my principles get in the way of me buying a phone that you like.

wow...who knew that the eris owners were so feisty :)

Former Eris owner and now on a Captivate and quite possibly, Iphone 4

it is incredibly difficult for me to believe i had this phone(eris)

Before touching the droid(1st gen), i loved it

It was sexy, it was nice, it worked well...so i thought

playing with the droid quickly marred my time with the eris

I dont believe the Eris V X debate will truly favor the Eris except in looks/form factor which at the end of the day is just subjective

Let's not get on the fact its HTC

It doesn't bother me much. There are plenty of good phones out there, but your reason for not buying a Motorola phone is a bit flawed. If there are other reasons, then it's ok. But, like I said, eFuse has been cracked and custom ROMs are out there.

If it's the principle that they had the software in place in the first place, then don't forget your Eris was updated multiple times to patch exploits needed for rooting. So...Motorola isn't the only one guilty of doing this.

eFuse is not the same as a locked bootloader. And it doesn't matter if's been cracked. It's the fact that Motorola saw fit to take the "protection" one step further than other manufacturers.

To go back to the software DRM comparison. I can accept some DRM, such as Steam, when it gives additional features. Ubisoft took it to the extreme with their DRM and Activision removed features from MW2 in order to implement their DRM. I will not give money to a company that implements DRM beyond what I consider reasonable.

i've got an eris, d2 and evo 4g in the house. I love my d2. The eris with kaosfroyo v30 is a great phone, however it just doesnt have the processor power that the d2 and the evo do. The evo is great, stupid fast, BUT the battery life is nothing next to the d2.

Vs. the X, if HDMI is a big deal to you, or higher res video/picture than you would probably want the x. Short of that and a few other things, I prefer my d2. The x is a little too big IMO.

Rooting does take care of the motoblur bloatware hell, which will wipe out the battery on the d2/x quickly, but at this point there isnt a way to flash in a custom kernel to overclock....yet.

There are a few roms out now and more are coming out for the d2, i believe the x has a small handfull as well.

Either way, its definatley a nice upgrade from the eris, which is still a good phone post root/rom :)

I'm not bashing the Eris. I loved mine. its even built better than the Inc. If we could have the Inc processor in the Eris body. best phone made to date... but no why would htye do that, lets drop a top selling phone and make a new one. look at the iphone, you have a great idea, build from it...

scary alien, I changed my name used to be HTCthebestdroid... what ever happened to eris official 1,1,,,?

Dude, missed you around here...how did you change your name? Did you have to re-signup? I noticed Droider13 over on the Droid X threads is now "D13"...maybe mods/guides can do this or at your request...

I keep checking the threads over on XDA to see if 1.1 is coming... I almost figure Ivan has moved on to ther things. A new version w/the 17-July OTA update and his other tweaks would have been sweet! I also think that PlainJaneT2 is pretty-much what Ivan's full 1.1 would have been, so maybe he's abandoned things since it was already pretty-much done.

BTW, I do agree with you re. the Incredible...I almost pulled the trigger on that phone, but the timing of upgrades, etc. led me to wait for the X.

I pull-out the ole Eris every once in a while...my son is starting to show some interest in Android app development...I helped him setup the SDK and Eclipse the other day with an Android Virtual Device to start playing with building apps. I think he's got an eye on my Eris .

Cheers and good to hear from you again!
