Update: 2.1 OS upgrade for Rogers HTC Magic+

Well, #1, it hasn't happened yet. Wait for it becoming reality before going FACK!

#2. You can always do it yourself by starting here: Truth Seeker: Trying Cyanogen Mod android on my HTC Magic

Then go here: HTC Magic - CyanogenMod Wiki

If the carrier announce it i call it a fact. It may just be vaporware until it's delivered but does not mean it won't happen. In any way the carrier is just branding the update and not the one actually making it. He just contact the supplier ask for a update and the price tag, offer some cash, supplier says yeay or nay then carrier announce it's on the way when a deal is reach. I don't see any carrier announcing a update that won't see the light of day.

They may not be out in a timely fashion but they are coming out none the less. Does not excuse the tardyness but still is a fact when it's advertise.

I contacted RogersElise to have a look at SFR claim (she is french european) and report back to RogersMary so that she can contact HTC and ask why a 2.2 is coming in EU and not in NA.

RogersMary said she would have an announcement for us this morning, but a follower on Twitter informs me the update is already available if you manually check for it from your phone.

Can anyone confirm?

i see the update on my phone when i click 'check now' on system updates.

Android 2.1 Platform Upgrade 3.54.631.3 (80.81 MB) This update will require a data connection, Rogers customers will not be charged for this update. Please back up your data first before upgrading your phone. Any questions? Contact HTC @ 1-866-449-8358.
- You will be unable to use your phone or make emergency calls during the upgrade.

but i'm not updating till it's known what this update does to the phone. xD I learned from the 911 update fiasco last time.

I see you've already found it :) Still, I'm happy to confirm that HTC Magic+ Customers should expect HTC to start rolling out 2.1 OS today, OTA.

Enjoy! I'll be reading this thread periodically over the day.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the update!! We'll make sure to post back with any bugs that people are reporting. Hopefully with the testing that was done this time, there won't be any :)

If I don't have a data plan, can I turn it on and download the update and not be charged for the download?

yes, it gives you the option to choose to connect via WIFI and download it that way too, but it states even if you download it OTA on a Rogers data connection, you wont be billed for the 80+ megs it is.

Anyone know what would happen if you lost data half way through? Auto resume function?

Also, did i read Mary say somewhere earlier this would not delete any data on your phone so long as you already had Sense UI and the e911 update on it already?

Can't believe i yammered so long to get this damn update and now im being so cautious about downloading it

yes, im one of those crazy people.

A user on Twitter reports the following: WoodlawnTech @IWMOPS @RogersMary currently having problems with upgrade. Triangle with ! in it and phone next to it on screen..... what does this mean?

Anyone else having any problems?

I didn't have any issues downloading. From what I can tell, all my apps are still there but I did lose some of my numbers in my contacts but that's not a big issue for me.

Well, here we go... good luck to all. :)

I am probably not going to update now... OS 2.1 b/c it doesn't store apps on SD (OS 2.2 allows that). No point in downloading an OS that will only take away more memory and further prevent me from installing all my preferred apps.

I said it before, and I will say it again... it truly is a pity that there is so much OS fragmentation and that it is now likely that some Magic owners on other carriers will have OS 2.2 but we at forever stuck with OS 2.1.

It really begs the question...
Mary, if HTC is actually releasing OS 2.2 for the Magic (and variants), why is it unavailable to all Magic owners, regardless of carrier?

BTW, it now appears that the French carrier SFR AND T-Mobile in the U.S. will offer OS 2.2 for the Magic (or MyTouch): http://www.phonenews.com/htc-droid-eris-will-not-updated-to-android-2-2-froyo-12451/
