Update: 2.1 OS upgrade for Rogers HTC Magic+

so no talk to text installed - this was one of the features I was looking forward to. I note from above that it is possible to find a solution but disappointed it's not on the 2.1 update.

Here, try this keyboard.

BTW, imo speech to text is highly over rated. I prefer using the swype keyboard even though it doesn't allow for speech input. You also need a data connection for the speech to text to work so unless you're on wifi, each time you use it, it's eating up your data.

For all users with update errors

It seems there are two common errors, the triangle-! error, and the Insufficient Storage error.

1. In most cases users with the triangle-! error have been able to get the update to work but simply retrying the OTA update until it works. According to HTC the update is set up to continue DLing/installing from the last spot, so theoretically retrying will eventually have the update pick up where it left off. Possibly this error is due to network congestion from people doing the update?

2. as for the Insufficient Storage error, the majority of users who have done a Factory Reset have found that it works after.

So, if you encounter these errors, try the following:

1. Retry the OTA repeatedly until it works.

2. Turn off phone, remove battery, wait 10 seconds or so, replace battery, reboot, try OTA again.

3. Factory Reset (MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR STUFFS!) then OTA.

Also, there is manual download you can try (not OTA). Details are on my blog.

You can add text to speech easily enough, just download vlingo. You can also still add things like 3d galleries too.

I have an issue ... Pinching does nothing. It used to zoom in on web pages, not anymore. Italso doesnt work to zoom out on the home screen like its supposed to. Any ideas or anyone else having these issues?

please correct me if I'm wrong, but does the Magic hardware support pinch-to-zoom?

Pinch works in the browser for me...not on home screen

Quick impressions - no data missing, faster performance, reorients (portrait to landscape) much faster, much more memory available (system seems to use less). All good so far...

Installed - voice recognition works to the point where I am in the message - it tells me I need google voice search (using Swiftkey) and when it prompts to download it does not find it.

Is there a work around? Does it work with Sense keyboard?

EDIT: Noted that one has to use the Vlingo keyboard - installed and works... not sure it picks up my messed up Scot's Canadian accent though!?!?!

I was curious, so I decided to update one of our test lab HTC Magic phones. FYI, this Magic is far from stock as it has been played with quiet a bit, and has a number of apps installed on it. The total available memory, as reported by settings shows 66MB, SD memory free is about 180MB.

For those who have not done the update, this is what you can expect in an ideal situation. At least, I hope your experience was as smooth as mine.

1. OTA OS 2.1 download = ~ 40 minutes
2. Select Install now
3. The phone will immediately reboot
4. Time to install OS 2.1 = ~ 10 minutes
5. After OS is installed, phone will reboot (the waiving droids are gone!)
6. Another 8 minutes or so is required for first time installation scripts to run.

Once completed, you will note that you lost your custom app folders (if you had them), apps/widgets on screen, and contacts. You will have to rebuild your folders, apps, and widgets. Contacts will need to be re-synced under Settings/Accounts & Sync (nice and simple).

I haven't done much else yet... but so far it actually seems a little faster than OS 1.5.

I am unsure if I will update my personal HTC Magic... I will experiment with this phone a little more before deciding.

Yes...um sort of.. I hesitate b/c in Maps it seems very unruly. It seems confused unless you give it only the lightest touch pinch/pull... otherwise it seems to always zoom out. Anyone else experiencing this?

The browser pinch to zoom works as well as it did in OS 1.5 (w/Sense UI). Wait, but simple Flash animations no longer seem to work.

I actually installed the text-to-speech thing through google maps when it asked me to install it to use navigation so try doing it that way. It did have trouble finding it though so give it some time and you may have to try once or twice.

As for the keyboard thing, Vlingo comes with its own keyboard that has the speech button. Bit of an issue for me though because I use Swype so I have to change back and forth if I want to use it (but apparently the Swype people are looking into adding a mic button in their next update, whenever that is).

And I've got pinch working now...turns out I needed to reboot again, now it works wonderfully.

I'd rather use the Swiftkey keyboard with voice button then the Vlingo keyboard as well - found it hard to use.

I gave it a try. Disclosure: this is on a Magic that has been on various 2.x roms including Froyo for months. I updated via recovery so that I keep root and can go back to 2.2. I flashed to the new radio combo, wiped clean, and flashed the rom.

I let things sync for a while and the Market showed most of my previous apps to install. The backup let me restore everything else I wanted.

I'm still not a Sense fan so that takes some getting used to again, I could install ADW but I want to see this rom as designed. It feels a lot better than the 1.5 but not as fast as the 2.1 and 2.2 roms I've been using. The Navigation works the same as before with the re-routing function working better. Other newish apps such as Buzz work as they should, I hope to see lots of new Buzz users soon.

The keyboard takes time to get used to after using a different one so I put Swype back on and that works as before.

Data and WiFI work fine, camera is better than before. The gallery actually works now which is a big deal. Just give it time to rebuild the thumbnails one time.

WiFI tethering didn't work nearly as well as it did before so I'm going to dig into that later. I don't use it much but it is a critical function for me.

The R apps as always are useless to me but I won't worry about them.

Well, I think I now have a reason to update my personal Magic.

The GMAIL app now allows for multiple email accounts. Even better, finally business GMAIL calendar synchronization.

But if you have a business GMAIL account, like I do, there is a little twist to getting it to work.

When I first tried to install my business account (as a second email account), I was seeing the error, "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server"

After doing a little searching, I discovered that this is a bug in OS 2.1. However, the solution is weird but fast and easy.

Believe it or not, to add a business account, you need to do the following:
1. Start up the You Tube app
2. Select log in (log out of any account you are in already)
3. Enter your GMAIL business account address and password. It will fail if you don't already have a You Tube account with those credentials. Don't worry!
4. After it fails, exit from the You Tube app
5. Start the GMAIL app, Press MENU, and select Accounts
6. You will now see your business GMAIL account (as unsynced)

:)

The solution was derived from here: Android: "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" - Gmail Help

I did the update to google maps and have the google nav icon as well - was not asked to install voice search - how annoying.

I see that in the setup section at text-to-speech the install voice data is darkened and not accessible. Is everyones magic like this?

That's because the speech data is already installed, the sample should work. A few posts above talks about how to get the voice search.

I installed the 6.35.16.19 radio and that is working great, got almost 5M/1M speed on it.

I was asked to install it when I selected "navigation" within Google maps, then it took me right to the market and downloaded something. I don't know if it's the same thing or not but that's the only extra thing that I needed to download.
