Update: 2.1 OS upgrade for Rogers HTC Magic+

Hi Folks - I see some of you have done a factory reset and that work but I also received the following advice that could perhaps help with the insufficient memory issue. These are HTC's recommendations for memory allocation for FOTA to be successful.

1. Ensure that there is at least 30MB+ of free device memory
2. Ensure that there is at least 250MB+ of free SD card memory

The Insufficient memory issue has more to do with the SD card memory than with the device memory.

I hope this helps. Please let me know.

Mary, where is the change log you promised us? Surely a company such as HTC is capable of tracking what changes they make.

I just tested the Google Buzz integration and happy to say it works fine. This is my invitation for people to try Buzz. It is something similar but rather different than twitter. It has the location services of 4SQ and the others. It is more about discussion that just blasting noise into the wind like so many others.

The best way to get started is from a pc browser go into the same gmail account you use on your phone and set things up. Setup your profile and any settings you like. (While there you can also clean up your contacts and it will all sync back to the phone). Now you'll want the Google Buzz Widget from the Market. From there you can post Buzzes, post pictures from the camera or gallery, etc. Lots of interesting people out there. Also, from maps you can enable the Buzz layer and find Buzz posts from the map. I like viewing places far away and seeing who is talking. Found some interesting people that way.

You folks have been missing a lot being stuck on 1.5 for so long.

I actually installed the text-to-speech thing through google maps when it asked me to install it to use navigation so try doing it that way. It did have trouble finding it though so give it some time and you may have to try once or twice.

As for the keyboard thing, Vlingo comes with its own keyboard that has the speech button. Bit of an issue for me though because I use Swype so I have to change back and forth if I want to use it (but apparently the Swype people are looking into adding a mic button in their next update, whenever that is).

And I've got pinch working now...turns out I needed to reboot again, now it works wonderfully.

My Swype didn't work at first with the update. I tried Vlingo and it seemed like the speech to txt response time was really slow...although I was trying it from home where reception seems to be lousy.

For anyone else that has problems with Swype, I uninstalled it, logged in on their website and sent myself the link again to download. Now it seems to be working okay. If they add a mic button that would be cool.

Hey.....

I tried taking my battery out, resetting my phone and running the manual update! I keep getting errors. When I try and update OTA it doesn't pick up an update?

I'm getting that signature error 132....

Aaah!!

Any suggestions?

@huch

1. Just keep retrying update to see if it will go through. If retrying a few times doesn't work, you might have to try...

2. Factory Reset phone (backup first) and then update.

I've tried about 5x now and it always gives me this 132 error after its "updating signatures".

I have factory reset my phone already..

If I try and check for an update through the phone, it just hands at "checking".

ugh..

A Twitter follower asked me to post the list of apps that were installed on my phone after the 2.1 update (which I finished just about an hour ago). My Magic was complete stock, PRE-911 Android, and I did a factory reset before updating, so there was NOTHING else on my phone.

So.... here is a list of what is installed on the Magic after a factory reset, then the e911 1.5 update followed by the 2.1 update:

YES! It's horrible! Oh, the humanity.....

Can you help me get my Magic working again? As I detailed in my other thread on this forum -- basically I have a Rogers Magic, which I rooted using GBD's method to CM6. Then I found I had problems with losing data connection intermittently, likely due to radio issues (?). So when Rogers rolled out the 2.1 update, I decided that it would be a bright idea to download it and install it over USB to replace the CM6. To all the techie wizards around here, I'm sure this is quite a laughably idiotic thing to do. :)

Oh well..... any ideas, anyone? I didn't make a "goldcard" or anything like that.

NO! I tried that very same stunt with my Rogers Magic that I had rooted just two days earlier (with CM6), and now it's a brick. I don't think it's fixable. None of the buttons work.

People like me really shouldn't be playing around with rooting! :(

That really sucks. I guess I'm stuck on 1.5 then because I don't think 2.x is officially coming to Australia. You Canadian's are a lucky bunch!

I wonder why it bricks the phone, something is obviously not compatible.

To all of you hanging on a Signature 132 error, XBrav and Puleen are working on it right now. One of us will update here as soon as we have something. I'm out of my league on this one, I defer to them...

We've not gone any solution around this. Essentially this means that something in the boot loader or the partition is messed up from what XBrav is telling me. Something unique to do with my (errr... our) device configuration that's resulting in this.

I'll speak to Mary about this tomorrow and see if there are others who are having this happen and what options there are.

See, this update was a real... odd update. The core error is with the boot partition. That's where it fails.

It seems in the logs, everything flashes fine until the end, when it draws the partition layouts. I personally don't develop updates, so I'm not sure why it looks at the partition table to begin with.

It seems the initial error occurs during writing of the userdata partition. It mucks up either the partition table layout, or just the boot sector.

Now, RUU mode is an interesting mode. Unlike standard fastboot mode, you can actually execute "fastboot flash" commands. However, (THANKS AS USUAL HTC), everything you can flash HAS to be signed by HTC. So you can't just go flashing even extracted img files to fix it. As well, some nice person at HTC decided to disable the ability to erase partitions from RUU mode.

Now, with "fastboot oem" commands, we were unable to boot into regular, HBOOT, or fastboot modes. There was a "too many links" error when trying to do a standard boot, compared to your regular one describing the model number and such.

So, here's where it sucks. Unless HTC actually becomes helpful, the only way to fix this is either JTAG or send to HTC.

Puleen and I went through everything, including trying the zip files from the e911 update. The only way to fix, I repeat again, is to reflash the flash ROM, which you cannot do via software at this time.

I'll post as I hear things. This really sucks for you guys :(
