I don't know if any of you are following this, but I sure have. If you haven't heard of PSFreedom, PSJailbreak, PSGroove, etc.. it is a hack that enables your PS3 to run homebrew software. It only works on the 3.41 firmware, but is a milestone in PS3 development, taking 4 years to get to this point.

Anyway, there has been a lot of work porting this function over to Android devices, and this morning they finally got the Droid done!

If you are interested in running homebrew apps, backing up your games, installing different OS (eventually), then check this out.

PSFreedom is Now Ported to the Motorola Droid Phone! - PS3 NEWS - PlayStation 3 News - PS3 Hacks

Edit:

The site doesn't specifically state what the PSJB method actually is, so if you don't know it is simply this:

1. Unplug your PS3 completely from a/c, either via a switch on your surge strip, or unplugging the cord from the back of the console.

2. Plug you phone into the far left USB port on the front of the PS3.

3. Start the psfreedom.ko script on your phone via a terminal emulator.

4. Plug the PS3 back in.

5. Hit the power button immediately, followed by the eject button on the console.

6. You should hear multiple beeps as the console attempts to load from the USB port.

7. On the XMB you should see a new option under Games to "Install Package File." Insert a secondary USB storage device into the PS3 to laod your backup manager/ftp app. The .pkg files must be on the root of the new USB device in order for them to be seen.

YOU WILL NEED A RETAIL DISC IN THE DRIVE TO LOAD ANY BACKED UP GAMES!

That's only if you updated to 3.42. Since it is not forced, a lot of people haven't installed it yet, like me. I could care less about PSN, so I just disabled DNS to completely kill it.

Besides, word is there's already a 3.42 version in the works.

Attached is a shot of my freshly hacked PS3... woot!

Ahh I got all happy, but I'm not gonna mess with my kernel. I'll just use the TI-84+ method.

All it is, is flashing a new boot image. If you do a nandroid backup prior, you can then go back in and do an advanced restore and only select the boot partition. If you make a backup of the PS3 modded boot image as well, you can easily switch back n forth in recovery.

Nothing on your actual ROM is modified in any way with the new boot image, aside from USB not functioning for charging or data transfer.

Does this allow playing backup games? I've heard a version was released that simply allowed 3rd party code to be loaded but didn't allow backup's to be played.

Correct, what I posted will simply allow you to run the unsigned code on the PS3. You will still need to install the patched backup manager to the console afterward via another USB thumb drive. The fixed manager isn't too hard to find with a quick google search.

There is also a FTP program already out that will let you send games/files via LAN to the PS3's internal hard drive as well.

My god, I may want to mess with my kernel then -.-;

rooting my droid is one thing. I don't know about rooting my PS3 until it seems fool proof. I JUST had to buy a PS3 slim b/c my original fatty decided to stop reading blu-ray after 4 yrs of daily use. AND I just updated both of them YESTERDAY to the 3.42 (SOB). I was gonna try it on the fatty since it can't read games now anyway BUT DAMN UPDATE! oh well here's to hoping they crack 3.42!

P.S. I believe you can still get online if you're on 3.41, as long as you use the proxy.

Yea, you can, I just don't really wanna mess with it or take the risk of getting completely banned before there's a way found to completely avoid it.

Well, word on the street is, the original PSJailbreak guys have already cracked 3.42, but it only works on their device (yea right). So I'd say within a few weeks the PSGroove/Freedom guys should have it cloned.

Still, seems a little annoying. Playing cat and mouse is fine if updates come out every few months, but Sony's been patching exploits within a few weeks of their release. Luckily, I was interested in buying a new gaming console right around when Sony removed Linux support, so I just gave them the finger and bought a 360. I may look into the PS3 again if Linux support is brought back. ;)

Again, the speed at which Sony is patching exploits is unnerving, though.

Hey Shadowtech

Have you getten this working on your droid? I've been trying and can't seem to get it to work. I think the most recent instruction on the psfreedom droid wiki may not be for my recovery console. I have bugless beast v.4 runnign and the clockwork mod recovery console. When I install droid-freedom.zip the loading screen goes by so fast I have doubts that its doing anything at all. Do I need a different recovery console for the zip file to install properly?

According to the WIKI, bugless beast .4 is supported. But it doesn't specify what recovery application needs to be installed or is suggested to be installed. I flashed clockwork mod on there because it seemed to be suggested by RomManager which was a pretty handy tool. I'm not sure where to go from here for good info. I cant even seem to find a specific person that's actually succeeded with this. But i may just be looking in the wrong places.. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Well, all that is installed, is a boot.img, so the screen going by rather quick shouldn't be too surprising. Aside from the confirmation in Recovery, there is really no visible way to see that it has been changed. The only difference you should notice is that your phone will no longer charge or mount via USB anymore. If yours won't charge after flashing, it has the jailbreak on it.

Then to hack the PS3 is nothing more than plugging your phone in, and typing in the psfreedom.ko command into a terminal emulator. You shouldn't even see any confirmation there either, it just does it. Once you run that command, you then do the physical booting sequence on the PS3 to activate.

Always make sure that after you are done with the exploit you reflash your original boot partition onto the phone. Otherwise you won't be able to charge the battery through the phone, and if it dies, you're SOL without an external battery charger.

Think of it as using your rooted phone to root your PS3. It grants "admin rights" to the system allowing you install community created software. This software will eventually allow you to do anything from manage your music and videos in a full featured media player app, to backing up your ps3 games to a large hard drive and playing those games directly off the hard drive without a need for a disc. You can argue about this going hand in hand with software piracy but that's a different discussion ;)

GOT IT! haha I feel so silly. For some strange reason, I was using the mirror download link for the droid-freedom.zip. The mirror link for the download is the original, non updated .zip file from before they updated the instructions to allow flashing right from the .zip file. The "official" link for download has the updated .zip file and this flashed fine. PS3 officially jailbroken with my Motorola Droid 1.:D

I have installed the so called "patched backup manager". However, the ps3 still freezes every time you try to load a backup. I think this is due to a unpatched psfreedom hex. Until this is available i'm not sure you can load backups.

i have found a backup manager also not sure if it the right one tho.. because it freezes here aswell when i try to load a backup

The psfreedom.hex is only for the USB boards. The psfreedom.ko in the first link is essentially the same thing that we load onto our Droids.

After you successfully hack the PS3, you should see 2 new options under the Game section of the XMB. One of them allows you to install package files. These must be on the root of another USB device. If you grabbed the right manager.pkg file and have it on the USB thumb drive, you can then install it.

Take note, you can still install pkg files without actually getting the exploit to work, but you will not be able to launch the programs. If that is the case, you need to try the PSJailbreak method of booting again until the apps launch. Once they do, you do not need your phone hooked up until the next time you manually reboot the PS3.

Hehe, I was waiting for this. Now my D1 has a use :)

I was looking at the TI-84+ method also, but it didn't seem to allow playing my backups.

I'll give this a shot when I get home, thanks for posting it!

Any updates Fab? Are you able to play back ups? Also, can someone please clue me in a bit more.

I get that the linked file "jailbreaks" your PS3, but then what is needed to play backups? Another program? Can it be loaded on a normal USB stick?

Thanks!

I have the manager installed and i've been able to make backups. When i try to load a backup it takes me back to the XMB. I can then look at the games section. You must have disc in the drive, which I do, which instead of showing the name of the actual disc shows the name of the backup which you attempted to load in the backup manager. I then try to launch this "disc", and it starts to load, but then freezes the entire system before loading.

Any idea what the problem is?
