Google navigation...

does it not use google maps? which is on the phone

so to check - i have to have mobile internet turned ON to use navigation?

You can download your route using wifi, at home for example, but if you deviate from the route you will need mobile internet turned on in order to re-route.

In other words yes you do need either wifi or mobile internet turned on, at least initially.

I have the same limit. 500mb is about 15mb per day and I use Google nav every weekday to got work (110 mile round trip) and I don't go over even with some lunchtime browsing too. Download 3g watchdog to keep an eye onhow much data u use and u shud b fine

i have 3g watchdog

is there a cradle for the desire that keeps it charged while using navigation

i keep borrowing my dad's sat nav but would prefer something of my own

Yes there are loads - do a search on Amazon or mobile fun.

Be careful with the car charger you get though - some don't provide enough charge to keep pace with the amount of juice navigation uses so the Desire will actually discharge even though it's plugged in.

After the second or third day shouldn't you remember the way to work ;)

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this question, as I am new to the forums, but I hope someone here can help.

I have an htc Desire with a contract from Orange. I don't have roaming turned on as I don't go abroad often.
However, I am going on holiday to Greece in October for two weeks and I would like to use the GPS navigation functions of the phone. However, if I turn roaming on I will get charged a huge amount for downloading data (the maps) while abroad - won't I?

Therefore, I wondered if it is possible to download the google maps for Greece on to my phone before I travel and therefore not have to use roaming data charges when in Greece?

Does that make sense? Any thoughts?

Not sure about Google but an app called MapDroyd allows you to download the maps you want when at home and store them on your SD card. Not sure if it has a nav option though but I just used it like a map when I was walking around a French town.

I have just checked and there is no nav option on MapDroyd but you get maps of the whole world for free and you just download the area you want thus no data needed just GPS.

Get NavDroid

It's based on the same map system as MapDroyd but gives you navigation. I can't imagine it's hugely accurate though given the maps it has to work with so it might send you the wrong way round one way systems or something but it should work as a basic nav package.

Alternatively one of the commercial sat nav packages have different maps although for a single holiday they probably aren't cheap.
