Root Tired of laggy stock Droid - Is rooting for me?

I'm close to jumping the gun on rooting my phone for the first time because I can't stand how slow and laggy my Droid has become. So to those that overclock, is there a noticeable difference? Is rooting worth it if I plan to use this as the primary benefit? Also, if I understand correctly, I should be able to use the stock froyo ROM and have access to SetCpu through rooting, correct?

Many thanks.

Go for it, take the rooting plunge. I held off from rooting for months and when I finally rooted my Droid I found that doing it wasn't that big of a deal and the benefits of rooting made themselves apparent immediately.

If/when you do root and you feel like trying out a custom ROM, I recommend Ultimate Droid 8. It's new, and it's amazing. By default it runs on the stock Froyo kernel but runs way faster than the stock ROM.

I get a kick out of showing my D1 to my friends that have Galaxies and Dx's. They always say how they heard the D1 is laggy and how much better their phone is. First I show them my quadrant score (averages over 1600) compared to their phones stock speed. Then I let them play with my phone. After the oohs and ahs the first thing they ask me is if they can root their phones too :D

It will drain your battery faster, but with setCPU it gives you the option to underclock it when it's not in use so that pretty much negates the added drain. Most people set it to 800MHz when in use and 250MHz when idle. The sadness is unescapeable though. :p They're always trying to take your root.

Yep. I am trying a slayher 800 kernel right now just for those reasons. It idles with the screen off at 125 but zips right up to 800/250 when it is in use. Setcpu is THE battery saver for rooted phones. The fact is for most of us the phone is idle most of the time. Why should you be using all that battery when the phone is just sitting in your pocket? That is the beauty of rooting, you can set the phone up to fit how YOU use it. Once you are rooted changing roms, kernels, basebands is as simple as pressing a few buttons.

PS My phone is still pretty snappy running the 800 kernel. It may not produce the same quadrant scores but I am not really noticing a difference from the 1000 kernel.

Here is how you get rid of the OTA (thanks to GirLuvsDroid):

1. In Root Explorer, go to /system/
2. Tap Mount R/W at the top, then long-press on build.prop and scroll down to Open in Text Editor
3. Once the file is open as a text file, scroll down until you see the line that says: "ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG01B/45394:user/release-keys" and change it to read as follows:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG22D/50454:user/release-keys
4. Tap the back key and say "Yes" when it asks you to save (it will automatically back up the original file for you)
5. Tap Mount R/O at the top
6. Reboot

You will no longer get the OTA update notifications, because Verizon will believe you already have it.

If you don't want to do that you can wait for Pete to get his latest Rom up. I am sure he will take care of the OTA with it. There may be other roms out there that automatically block it but I have not really looked into it.

I am all for rooting, but you may try installing Launcher Pro as it makes home screen scrolling much much smoother as well as giving you a great launcher bar at the bottom of the screen(icons on the bar can also be swiped for a completely different action), more homescreens, the ability to add an extra row of normal icons, and much more.
