Root rmk [OP] - [ROM] Virtuous v2.5 (9/1/10): Stock Sense/Froyo v3.21.605.1 w/Fixes & Enhancements

upgraded to 2.7 today, runs great with custom kernel! just did it a few hours ago so can't comment on battery life, definitely seems faster though. Only thing I dislike is that I will have to reinstall the INCredible rEVOlution theme.

I'll probably switch to a different ROM soon, but this one is super stable and performs great.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but when I use a screen-off profile of 245 / 384 - conservative, the phone takes considerably longer to wake when unlocking or receiving a call. Also, after unlocking there tends to be a slight lag when scrolling between screens for a second or two. I guess it's a trade off of performance and battery life.

I personally like the phone to be instantly responsive and snappy when I wake it, so I've been using a screen-off profile of 245 / 537 - conservative, and it's been working great.

Currently running Virtuous 2.7 w/ BFS#4 (just toying with it as the Virtuous Custom Kernal did not seem to have any impact to my battery life)

Just curious, does anyone recommend using powersave as opposed to conservative? I've been messing around with a sleep profile (245/384 - powersave), but when I use those settings it will not show who's calling, only the lock screen while it rings. Sometimes it will not even let me interact with the phone until it sends the call to voicemail. I've since put it back to 245/384 - conservative, and I'll post how it goes.

Also, I've noticed some lag as mentioned in the above quote when I use a conservative profile, but it doesn't seem to go away after a few seconds. The only way it seems to go away is if I set it back to Ondemand. 998 with Conservative seems to have a lot more lag than 514 Ondemand.

Anyone else having these issues, and can anyone clarify how much of a difference there is between ondemand, conservative, and powersave as far as ramping up cpu speed goes?

Powersave is completely useless. It should never even be offered. It basically locks the CPU at the lowest possible operating frequency. I was actually astonished to see a King kernel released with powersave as the default at one point.

Short summary: Never use powersave. It's the same as setting the min/max to 245.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but can the phone still oporate in powersave mode? Meaning can i listen to music and shut the screen?

Or is the music preventing the phone from "sleep" state?

Im so ignorant with this lol. But im just wondering because im underground in tunels with no service a lot, if the powersave might be good for me since i dont get phone calls anyway

I could be wrong, but based on what I've experienced in the last 24 hours in messing with it, I can barely get anything to work correctly in powersave mode. Music skipped and the touch input was hit and miss, it took several attempts to unlock it last night (using pattern lock). I was hoping it may be worth using for a Sleep profile, but from what I'm seeing, its not.

I noticed with Conservative things will work, but with a fair amount of lag. I noticed that streaming music consistently skipped and mp3's stored on my sd card would skip once or twice per song as well.

Did you guys factory reset before installing Virtuous?

Do you guys ever get sick of having to constantly reload everything and redo all of your settings?

No "factory reset" but I always wipe data/cache when changing between ROMS. If you have good backups, it really only takes a few minutes to get everything back to the way you like it. Appbrain & titanium backup are your friends.

As soon as I get things how I like them, I do a nandroid of that ROM. I keep my nandroids backed up to my computer, and have a txt file there with details about each (like: virtuous 2.6 + BFS#2), so I can easily revert back to whatever state I want.

Ah. So if I try this ROM and don't like it or have to revert back for whatever reason.. then I just go into clock work and run my Nandroid backup and voila I'm back to exactly what I had?

I'm still a little confused as to whether Nandroid includes your apps and settings.

I do have appbrain and a titanium back up however.

Exactly! Nandroid's are basically a snapshot of your entire system. Any kernel, apps, settings there when you make the nandroid, will be restored.

Awesome.. Is that the update.zip in my SD card?

I want to do a nandroid backup with my current settings.. will it overwrite the previous nandroid or will I have 2 backups?

No, nandroids are stored in sd/clockworkmod/backups/

I wonder why he removed Flashlight, Youtube, and my Verizon. Kind of strange to me.

I think I might stick with stock and remove my own bloatware.. don't seem to like anyones app removals/customizations as I already see about 4 good apps removed =/

They aren't removed, just moved so you *can* easily uninstall them.

Oh cool. So are you using BS #4?

Seems like people like that one a lot. If you BUY the rom manager than you can include that kernel at the same time you install the ROM right? And if you don't, then a custom kernel comes with the ROM already?

I don't want to install a Kernel with another kernel and brick the phone or something.

No, I am now using the custom kernel in virtuous. This can be installed with the ROM, because rmk included an option to choose which kernel you want on install via ROM Manager.

You can install any kernel via ROM Manager (free or paid), by downloading it to your SD card, and using the install rom from sd card option.

These were not removed or even deactivated. They are still there and fully functional, he just made it easier to remove them if you wanted to, so the choice is still yours. Pretty cool way of doing things if you ask me LOL!!! :D

Update on Virtuous 2.7 & BFS#4. After about 24 hours, I started noticing a significant amount of lag from touch input and a lot of all around sluggishness and more battery drain. I rebooted, but the symptoms remained. I altered my setCPU profiles (and even removed it to see what would happen), but no luck.

Until this occurred, BFS#4 seemed to work best for me out of the KingKernals. Going back to Virtuous Custom ROM to give it another shot.
