iPhone vs Desire comparisons... always the same!

Or I don't like arguments that don't make sense :D You can't have it both ways, folks. You can't say "oh people aren't mindless sheep" and then basically go "They simply rush out to buy an expensive phone they don't need to do basic stuff on because they heard it's good" and think it makes sense.

sorry, i wasn't trying to cause an argument, just a discussion.

but by the same rationale, "normal people" will never buy a Desire because it is also "an expensive phone they don't need to do basic stuff on because they heard it's good".

right?

Yes but this fashion thing is I think the issue.

I just had a bit of a brain wave; I think the reason I (and possibly red and others) don't like the iPhone users a great deal is because of this fashion thing, they think because its the "must have fashion accessory" it automatically is the best phone there is... Most people wont have even heard of never mind know anything about the other options, meaning that they automatically assume that they are a lesser product because they arnt the "must have item", its this poor uninformed sense of superiority that really grates on me and I think others.

What you think, have I hit the nail on the head?

then it's time to put aside your own inferioirty complex and just let it go.

+1

Yes, I agree there are people like this. But it also grates on me when people make grand assumptions about whole populations/consumer groups/religions/races etc etc based on the small minorities they hear about or encounter. It is just so narrow minded!

It's like me saying all Android users are geeky, friendless virgins. It simply ain't true!

Having said that, I do understand your frustrations with these minorities. On campus last year some fresher was bragging to his mates about his 15" MacBook Pro, talking some crap about the processors being more powerful or something than 'regular' laptops. He kept repeating how much he (by which he really means Mummy and Daddy) paid for it and scoffing at everyone else's laptops while cradling the thing like a new born child. Now as a Mac user myself, I wanted to go over, slap him clean round his face and tell him he's the reason we get such a bad name. But, in general, finding people like that is a very rare occurrence so it's pretty easy to let it go. ;)

I dont care so much that they use it or that they think that its superior some how, its the fact that they are so uneducated... I just cant sit by and actively allow them to be so uninformed. It don't much matter at the end of the day what phone they have, I just think this sort of blind decision if left can effect other things that are more important. heh.

The only thing that can catch people out I noticed with Android is the menu key, if they dont realise what it does it can be a problem...

I never said they needed to buy a Desire, did I ? That's my point - I wouldn't recommend a Desire to a family member unless it was what they needed. But at work, the Mac fanboys have been trying to force people to get iPod Touches and iPhones for years now when a much cheaper mp3 player or phone would suffice. Also, HTC doesn't act as if the Desire is vital to people's lives and the best thing since sliced bread. They don't give conferences with a nice trendy couch with a twat with trendy glasses using words like "amazing" and "magic" every 5 secs.

Very true - fashion isn't quality. It won't benefit anyone if people rush out to buy a product just because of its reputation as being "fashionable". It stunts market evolution and harms competition. The iPhone would cost a lot less if Apple didn't know they could get away with it.

I told a friend I had a HTC Desire, and was excited telling about the capabilities and her reply was. "I want an iPhone, it's better". She didn't know a thing about it but she still thought it was better.

it sounds like you've had some pretty traumatic experiences there but you shouldn't allow that to cloud your judgement.

I had the exact same thing happen at my work the other day. One of my staff saw me playing with my phone (he doesn't even know what it's called, who makes it etc) and just said "Nah, I still think the iphone is better."

I wanted to slap him and say "Ok tell me WHY it's better... what can your iphone 3gs do that my Desire CAN'T?" He wouldn't have been able to tell me one thing, not because there is nothing that the iphone can do that the desire can't but because he knows nothing at all about any other phone and is one the people mentioned in the above posts that almost refuses to acknowledge that any other phone other than the iphone exists, and so lives in blissful ignorance that his phone is better than anyone elses and can do stuff that no one elses can.

For me its anyother smartphone but the iphone.
Reasoning why? I condemn any manufacturer who dictates to me how I will surf the internet.
Theres no excuse to not implement an integral part of web browsing such as flash

Sure I believe html5 is the future but technology like all other technology should evolve and replace older or other naturally.
(And im not talking about connectivity through ports etc)

I love the fact that I can go on sites like mono-1.com/monoface/main
and poke about and enjoy the internet on my mobile device as its meant to be.

Buying into a device like the iphone and being censured to what they (Apple) what you to see is totally bogus.

I can only imagine if we bought a new TV and you couldn't receive a few channels because the manufacturer didn't like them

so what? this is typical tech vs normal behaviour.

you care about specs and performance and customisation and he doesn't. big deal.

sounds like you're the one with the problem. not him.

Mainly, I cannot stand the smug, smarmy and slimy Steve Jobs.
This is why Apple will get $0 from me. The other reasons only serve to reinforce my resolve ;)

you might be right but at least stevo has put Apple on the map for whatever reason. love him or hate him, he gives Apple a face (insert own joke/insult here)

a lot of people couldn't even name the CEO of HTC or Nokia (and no googling now...)

we dont need to..neither to google..I dont need how CEO looks or speaks for that matter.. I selected my phone becuase of its qualities(in other means Desire becomes popular becuase of its own qualities:cool:
not by some person bragging about its magical properties or marvelous engineering to make it drop calls:D

PS @Jim you beat me by a wide margin

I don't know, or care, who the CEO of HTC/Nokia/Panasonic/Subaru/Dell/Bosch/Hitachi/Flymo and a myriad of other companies is. I have purchased products from all of the above based on the fit of that product to my personal needs.
Not knowing a CEO will not stop me buying a product. Knowing the CEO and not liking him or her will.

so, if the CEO of HTC turned out to be a complete dirtbag, you'd stop using their product?

nice ethics.

Yep, If I took great exception to the person, then I would not buy their product. I see nothing wrong with that as an ethic - it is my choice. The list is pretty small though:
1. Steve Jobs
2. Michael O'Leary
3. Richard Branson
That's it.
p.s. I am not entering in to any debates about who I should or should not have on this list, since the list is mine, and mine only. Get you own list!

i could make that kind of decision based on a companies policies (production conditions, import/export etc but i'm not sure i'd let one person put me off though.

ah well, each to their own.

I have no ethics when it comes to tech, i simply by the product in my price range, and most suited to my fussy needs. Who actually owns, makes or constructs the product really dont make no odds to me. If money was no object, im sure i would have different values, and probably not even posting in forums, but on my yacht in the south pacific, with lots of females wearing next to nothink , in the sun ! :D
