Have just read this on one of the posts over on XDA Developers

"...I am from India where we guys don't have branded phones and all. one of my good friends working at Sony Ericsson India told me last night that on 23rd Sep India and UK generic will see the update most probably . update will be ota. about 206 mb and no multi touch no 16m colours , you will be able to store apps to SD card. better timescape widget , live wallpapers,hd recording , no flash light for camera , 5 home screens.
another update in Dec which is internally known as 2.1.3 will give single fingers zoom , 16m colors and flash for the browser!!!!
x10 will see 2.2 in Feb after the release of eclario also known as x12"

Not sure how much of this is really true as I've already read that the 2.1 update has got 16m colours from an internet source that claims to have had a hands on.

At least it's good to see that SE have implemented the apps to SD card and flash for browser from Froyo to 2.1.

Not really sure what to believe until we have it on our beloved X10's so best take everything you read on the internet concerning the X10 2.1 update with a pinch of salt :p.

It makes you wonder what problems SE have been having if they aren't able to include the 16m colours in this update. I remember reading on t'internet that initially the introduction of 16m colours was causing the X10 to lag big time and SE were having big problems with it. Not sure how much truth there is to that.

I'm a big defender of this phone and really do like it (except for poor incall volume and tinny speaker) but SE are really starting to annoy me if they can't get 2.1 fully ready for the X10 after all this time when most other companys are looking towards 2.2 .

If this is the update we've been waiting for, it's horrid. Sony is at least 3 months behind pretty much every major Android phone right now and even going to 2.1, they leave out some basic upgrades. I like the phone, but it's falling way behind. I don't see how how everyone else can get all these updates to Froyo with no issues, yet we get delayed peicemeal stuff.

I can likely live without multitouch, but give us something similar now, not in December.

True. Everyone seems to somehow know an SE insider....

I'm not too upset about some delay in our upates, but most Droid phones are already updated to 2.2 and we're stuck on 1.6 for at least a few more weeks, if not months for some areas - and then we only get 2.2. 2.2 is supposed to be way faster than 2.1. If Motorola, HTC, Samsung can do this, why is it so hard for SE?

I think at least most of this is true, I can confirm after browsing the Sony UK website:

[Regarding 16M colours]
Twitter / Richard Stopher: @SonyEricssonUK Why wont w ...
(Sony's reply): @rstopher We can confirm that this will not be implimented in the 2.1 update however all feedback regarding this has been passed on for you. September-13-10 8:41:53 AM via CoTweet in reply to rstopher

I couldn't care less about multi-touch, but for those that do:
"@F1shk We can confirm that the hardware of the handset does not support the Multi-Touch feature, therefore it cannot be implimented."

I wouldn't worry about what you read from Sony regarding something that is or isn't in the upgrade. I am very sure that this is a case of we don't know so let's not promise anything. Nobody will be upset if we are wrong this way.

The local SE guy here told me that 2.1 would actually only have 16 colours, not 16M. The good news is that users can select which colours they want on a first come, first served basis. I particularly liked the teal.
He also revealed that the battery for the new X12 would be powered by hamsters and that the moon was actually made of green cheese, which will be available in the 2.2 update in 2014.

Disclaimer: I had been drinking quite heavily before having this conversation, so I may have got some aspects slightly wrong.

True, but with the updates release date being next week, you'd think by know everything would be set in stone and ready to go.

There is supposed to be 2 parts to this upgrade....2.1 by the end of September...then timescape/mediascape upgrade in the 4q if I have it correct. If neither of these bring 16million colors I honestly will ditch my X10...and yes over the fact of not having 16m colors..I'm tired of my widgets looking like shit...I love this phone and I'm giving them the benefit of doubt but i need 16 m colors...its a big deal to me. If not....the desire hd sure looks like a nice replacement.

The only thing that looks like crap are contact images with they are blown up to 50% of the screen. The only upgrade I need is a high-res option or the ability to change the way contact images are displayed in the contact entry/during a call, possibly in an iPhone style:

As far as the X12....I hope they're working on it! The X10 is nearly a year old. For those in the US, that just got the device like me, I'm sure the X12 won't hit our shelves until summer/fall 2011.

See when I got this phone I had to redo the contact images and when I did they look awesome...when i call someone or someone calls me it looks terrific...did u try redoing your contact images? Its the widgets that bug me a lot because i can see all the little lines in them or gradients I guess would be proper.

Hmm. I uploaded all my contact images through Gmail's web interface. Is there another way that allows for bigger images?
