Root Best Rom and Best Kernel

This is your best friend: HTC EVO helpful/popular threads (Look here First!) - xda-developers

Anyway, I recommend visiting the link I gave you. But to summarize, its like this.

After you have root, and FULL NAND unlock, you download the zip file of a rom you want.
You put this zip file (leave it zipped) on the main category of your SD card (not in any folder).
Then turn the phone off.
Hold Vol. Down and Power button until phone screen comes to white screen with options menu.
Scroll down to Recovery and hit power to select.

Once phone is running in recovery (Black screen, green writing) then first

Make a nandroid backup. Option is under Backup/Restore.

After that, select Update ....
In that menu select the zip file for the rom. Then let it install, reboot and Done.

It's likely any rom you choose will also require you update a radio, wipe the device, possibly install additional update fixes.

If anything ever goes wrong do this:

Pull out the battery. Put it back in. Boot into recovery (vol down and power) and restore the Nandroid backup you made prior to starting.

Thank you so much sir...I will try the backup, and then try other ROM's.

Not a expert on this stuff but out all the ROMs I tried in the ROM Manager I liked Cyanogen the best. Seemed the fastest and the most noticeable changes including roaming. HOWEVER I'm a having small issue with my texts just timing out. Its pissing me off because I want to keep this ROM. I read somewhere theres a signal update as well...Baked Snack Seemed stable as well.

I can only tell you from my experience. I liked fresh, it was a nice layout and stable, pretty much the same with backed snack, I didnt care for CM6 because i dont really like the ADW launcher. CM6 doesnt have 4G, HDMI, and something else not working in it, i forget what it is at the moment. Really though, it's all about preference.

But CM6 can connect a wii remote. I'm a noob when it comes to root, roms, etc, but I was able to figure it out from reading step by step instructions to root with Unrevoked, then nand unlock, then install CM6. I like CM6 but I'll be switching whenever we get 4G in New Orleans unless Cyanogen comes out with an update to support 4G.

Seriously? I think your response is uncalled for sir.

I don't think it was uncalled for at all.

Look at the OP's last few threads started:

1. Best Rom and Best Kernel
2. How do I Root 2.2
3. How do I Install a ROM

It is clearly evident that the OP has spent very little effort in trying to learn anything about the root process on their own.

I disagree. Your EDIT was a bit more balanced, but the sarcastic story about a driver's license is rude and not needed. this is NOT a developer forum, it is NOT a wiki listing, it IS a community forum for conversation and assistance. Comments like yours, from individuals with that attitude only inhibit the masses from understanding what they don't understand at first.

I would ask how you personally learned about the Android platform, rooting and other tweaks, but I assume based on your posts that you'll likely tell me you discovered it all by yourself. Probably asking no questions, reading no one elses threads, hey maybe you learned it through Osmosis.

Now, food for thought: what would you have done if others hadn't posted informative, educational threads on these topics for YOU to read?

and... Instead of being arrogant and cocky, you could have INITIALLY posted the links to a few threads that would have answered his questions. Don't be a troll.

Step down from your soap box and take a look at who is saying what. I think you have me confused with someone else.

Come back when you are less confused.

I don't get that. Why are you mad at the person who put something out there that others with different knowledge curve can use it. Your anger should be towards OP.

Art,

Do you mind summarizing the few steps of how to flash ROM's in your EVO since you have recently rooted. I have rooted my evo which came with 2.2 by following process on xda which essentially changes to 2.1, and then root, and then upgrades it to stock 2.2.

No problem, and sorry for the delay, been running around all day with the kids...First thing I did was d/l titanium from the market as well as all my apps, set the phone up as you would normally emails, etc....Then I did the most important thing read-read-read and then I did it again. After I felt I had a pretty firm grasp of the darn thing I started d/l some ROMS, and kernals. So first ROM as Calkulins Evio, already been a day and a half so my phone was working great. Most important thing is to backup all of your info with titanium. I did the volume down/power on it went into reboot just like it did the first time, then volume down for no on reboot, then volume down to recovery, which is the black and green screen. Went to backup/restore, created a nandroid and rebooted phone. Made sure everthing worked and hooked up to my computer as a disk drive. Copied the ROMS straight to the SDcard, just drag and drop make sure it is on the root of the card not a folder and do not unzip! Then again with the power off then volume down/poweron again! NOTE: this can all be avoided with ROM manager-you can boot straight into recovery from your phone with an app. Once in Recovery went to wipe, did factory reset, cach and dalvick cache wipe, then Return and just like you did the first one install from SDcard, find your rom and install, reboot device, restore your files from titanium, you may have to d/l again from the market depends on your ROM. I always make sure everything is on my phone and working before I do a nandroid backup. One other thing I did was while mounted as disk drive on the computer I relabeled my nandroids. I have the very first one that I did, one from right before I started with the new ROMS and I have one Named Evio, and I have a stock that I started with kingkernal9-FPSunlock, setcpu, wifi and it is smoking! Wow long post!

Here, let me explain it for you. Xak said:

Hey, I'm getting my driver license tomorrow, I think I'll be able to find the DMV. So does anyone know how to pass the exam? Also, what is the best car based on speed and mileage? Also, if you suggest a car can you tell me exactly how to drive it because this will be my first car and I don't know what "steering wheel" and "pedals" and other stuff means.

EDIT:
Here's how to root your EVO
Fresh is a great ROM
Use this link or this link to find answers to any other questions you might have. Thousands and thousands of other people have rooted, flashed, modded, and done everything that you want to do to your phone many times, and they have posted instructions, questions, and answers about it.

With respect to what Xak said above, TF1984 said:

In which I replied to TF1984 with:

In response to what I said to TF1984, on his comment to Xak, TF1984 said to me (thinking I made the original Xak comment):

So, in a not so indirect way, I was voicing my displeasure with the OP.

Are we all caught up now?

You can also run the rooted version of 2.2 with a custom kernel such as netarchy Runs very stable. I am currently using baked snack 1.7 which I find is very similar to the rooted 2.2, tethering works fine. It does seem to boot faster than 2.2 and I have had no issues. The instructions for installation are step by step on the baked snack 1.7 xda home page

I had nothing but problems with this setup, phone was jerky, kept losing signal, tap icons and nothing happen etc. So I swapped to kingsx and have had no problems since.

That's what was going to say also. Run a rooted 2.2 and use something like Laucher Pro to customize your look of your home pages. I have no problems and can run a bunch of rooted apps just fine. Tether runs really good and I use Titanium backup for saving.

+1 for baked 1.7 sorry i like sense had tp, tp2, then went to a moment and missed sense and now i have it again and im not trading it.

You should give Launcher Pro + Plus a try. Sometimes I forget I'm not using Sense since theyre so similar but the advantage is its smoother and since its an app I can back it up and restore it to however I had it set up. Other advantage is the customizable docks on the button. You can have up to 15 shortcuts, or even tasks like new email, or new text Plus you can add swipe up to launch. This allows you to clean up your screen and use it for other things other than shortcuts.
