If you had a choice 4 free, "iphone4" or "desire"?

And despite your claim about battery, in order to compete with the longevity of the iPhone4 the Desire needs to have 3G and wifi disabled, no surfing, no widgets, no background synching and absolutely no multimedia capture or viewing in order to even come close.

I am consecutively getting a little more than a day out of mine for the past week.

Gmail sync, FB, news, Weather on.
Surf like a maniac
Email about 40 to 60 emails a day, 20-30 sms
Screen at 75%
etc, etc.

Yesterday, after 16hrs and 5 minutes, I had 41% left.

I had my doubts about the battery at first and almost went back to my Bold but, now all is good! :)

I personally don't like Apple products (I don't buy into hype when it comes to ANY product) but, to each their own!

I would choose the Desire without hesitation...here's why.

I had the option to do a hardware upgrade and get the iPhone 4 which was my original plan. But with the antenna and proximity sensor issues, and the fact the iPhone is still out of stock, I passed on the iPhone 4 and went with the Desire which I bought outright compared to the iPhone 4 at promo pricing. I was able to walk into a store and buy the Desire and walk out 10mins later. I'm really glad I went with the Desire for several reasons:

1 - It works! A coworker has the iPhone 4 and he drops calls where my Desire continues to work fine in 3G for both voice and data - his signal drops off in the office just holding it normally but he doesn't use a skin/case. That's the big one for me.

2 - The Desire has better and faster GPS performance. Maps locates faster and more accurately than the iPhone 4 in the same location. The precision is higher which is important for several GPS-aware apps. Maps works better on the Android OS with better integration I suppose.

3 - The Desire doesn't need bloated software (iTunes) that takes way too long to put songs or videos or photos on the phone - just copy and paste! This is really great when I use my phone to take snaps or videos, and can then immediately show or transfer them to family/friends on their computer without needing iTunes.

4 - The Desire uses an open source OS that is VERY customizable - I can set it up the way I want, not the way Apple wants.

5 - The Desire has real multitasking that doesn't lag when I perform other functions like looking up another contact. My coworkers iPhone 4 will stutter a bit during a call if he opens another app (could be related to signal level?).

6 - The Desire has slightly better earpiece volume with Froyo v2.2 update. Prior it was about the same as the iPhone 4, but now it's clearly louder and better in noisy environments than the iPhone 4. As for noise cancellation, the iPhone 4 is slightly better in noisy areas so the other caller has a better experience. But I've never had a complaint about the Desire and background noise, even when I ask about the call quality.

7 - The Desire has a user replaceable battery if needed.

8 - The Desire takes standard micro-SD cards for user-expandable memory.

9 - The Desire uses industry standard mini-SIM cards so swapping between phones is easy. My Desire is unlocked so using another SIM card in another country is very easy to do.

Beyond that, everything else is about the same for the important things like audio quality, "retina" ** displays, HD video recording (I have Froyo v2.2), features and performance are similar.

The iPhone 4 has the edge with video calling due to the front camera and rear camera image quality. But since I don't use video calling I don't care, and the camera in my phones has only been used for snapshots, not serious photos (I have a Nikon DSLR for that).

** the so-called "retina" display: the Desire and iPhone 4 both have very high resolution and you can't see the pixels when using the phones at normal viewing distances. When you get the phone really close, pixels are visible on both phones. Technically the iPhone 4 is better, but in actual use and for all intents and purposes, the Desire has an excellent display similar to the iPhone 4. Either works as intended.
:)

I agree 100%

Honestly, if I was offered one free I'd take the iPhone 4...I love my Desire but the iPhone is a much nicer piece of hardware
+1

I like my Desire but I'm getting fed up it because of the reboots / crashes (although I do have a replacement now but I reckon it'll break again) and other niggles such as the yesterday when my Desire told me I was in downtown Beijing!

Although I hate iTunes with a passion, if I was given a free choice of an iPhone 4 or a Desire I'd go for the Apple product everytime. However, as I have to pay for my own phone I chose the Desire. Over two years, it will cost me about

Desire everytime. Yes apple have done extremely well in the app store but how long can this last - also, I am still to find an app that I cant have on android that apple offers that actually makes my life better. - I dont play games on my phone anyway and so I am still yet to find someone with an iphone whatever the op system who can make me feel like.."I wish i could have that on my desire"

By the way I have found things that I can have that iphone owner friends of mine have mentioned that they wished that was on iphone.

I am tempted to say Iphone but my friend has one and he has a lot of issues that I dont have but then I have a lot of problems that he dosen't have. Looking my usage, the thing that i like about the iphone is its camera so I guess if it was free I would got for it. IF i ever get my froyo update maybe It will change my mind.

And video capture quality.
And more memory.
And a better screen.
And video calling (to other iphone4's so I concur this is a very minor point)
And despite your claim about battery, in order to compete with the longevity of the iPhone4 the Desire needs to have 3G and wifi disabled, no surfing, no widgets, no background synching and absolutely no multimedia capture or viewing in order to even come close.

Still, the Desire is, without doubt, an awesome phone.

more memory? think about it. you can buy a 32gb sdcard and the desire for hte price of the iphone.

screen isn't better, its smaller which is the problem.

video calling, you really need to include the very BIG limitations on this.

you're wrong about battery. mine lasts a day easliy. 3g enabled, surfing, widgets, background sync, and absolutely media capture.

  1. Video Capture
  2. Stills Capture
  3. Build Quality
  4. Battery Life
  5. Multimedia Sync
  6. Text Entry
  7. Apps
  8. Looks (highly subjective)
  9. Face Time
  10. Internal memory

Seriously dude, if you think that anyone who has nice things to say about a piece of rival hardware is some kind of "fanboy" then you are failing to recognize what a deluded android fanboy you are!

1 and 2 i don't know, i know my desire takes great pics tho.

3. very very subjective.

4. nope.

5. lol? NO. iTunes is terrible, got to plug in to sync everything. This is a massive negative.

6. there are more apps, but iphone suffers from not being able to multitask.

7. subjective.

8. wifi only iphone to iphone? poor.

9. see my previous post about costs.

1) So, out of the box the 32GB iPhone4 is better for memory, correct? And the 64GB model?
2) 960 x 640, 326dpi (iPhone4) vs. 480 x 800, 240dpi (Desire). Have you actually seen the phones side by side? The small benefit in size that the desire has over the iPhone4 is lost in clarity and sharpness of the image. Also, and this is a huge issue for some users: it is virtually impossible to view the Desire's screen in bright sunlight!
3) I did but I'll concede this point. It's essentially irrelevant.
4) I guess I should be clear here. Stick both on standby and the Desire tends to last longer. But actually use the devices and you will find that the iPhone4 will out-perform the Desire by a significant margin.

I love my Desire and am well aware of the areas in which it beats the iPhone4 hands-down. This thread is responding to the question "Which would you get for free?" It is important, as users of a Desire, to be honest and objective to the person posing this question. The knee-jerk reaction of some people on this forum (I'm not referring to you here, Lekky) is both childish and highly ironic. Forum users blasting Apple, crying "fanboy" at every available opportunity and claiming users of Apple products to be sheep or fashion victims fail to realize that they are just as guilty of the same types of behavior they are lambasting!

...claiming users of Apple products to be sheep or fashion victims

Every "screen phone" is nearly impossible to see in bright sunlight!!

And to your 2nd. point, I'm sorry but when you constantly hear iSheep saying the the iphone is better but not knowing why, I call that being a sheep (bah, bah)!!

I don't see a lot of Desires being waved around like so many Apple "users", sorry!

Lecter, I'm confused. Have you seen the iPhone4 screen outside next to the Desire? If you have you'll know that the difference is huge. If you're simply basing your comment on previous experience with other screens you need to re-evaluate your judgement.

Yes I have and I also don't need you to tell me what my judgment should or not be!

I think the Desire is an amazing device and so is the IP4 , its true to say that the build quality on Apple products are always top quality but IP4 appears to be more vulnerable if dropped , as for the camera the IP4 is better at stills I found the desire needed to have a really still hand to take a good photo using auto focus but its still a very good camera.

I had a 3G for over 18 months and it did have its problems and limitations as most of you will know , installing Itunes is a real pain in the butt and a huge waste on system resources also it always seem to get locked up and required resetting plus a lot of the good applications that I wanted were removed by apple or never approved.

I have only had my desire for 2 days and I think its amazing , I love the phone , Android and everything else as being able to customise it to your requirements is simple plus the phone is very fast.

You're right, out of the box the iPhone has more memory. But umm...what 64gig iPhone model are you talking about?
2) 960 x 640, 326dpi (iPhone4) vs. 480 x 800, 240dpi (Desire).
That's just numbers...in actual use both look the same. And Apple is lying when they say it's a "retina" display...that's just marketing hype.
Have you actually seen the phones side by side? The small benefit in size that the desire has over the iPhone4 is lost in clarity and sharpness of the image. Also, and this is a huge issue for some users: it is virtually impossible to view the Desire's screen in bright sunlight!
My coworker has the iPhone 4 and it's better in direct sunlight compared to my S-LCD equipped Desire, certainly not a great or huge difference. It's a non-issue for most people though since we just turn our backs to the sun when outdoors.
:)
If you want to see a really good LCD display that works great outdoors in full sunlight, take a look at some GPS units (like my Garmin 62s). Now THAT'S how all phone displays should look in sunlight!
4) I guess I should be clear here. Stick both on standby and the Desire tends to last longer. But actually use the devices and you will find that the iPhone4 will out-perform the Desire by a significant margin.
I wouldn't say it's significant overall unless you're a heavy gamer or listen to music all the time. Talk time on 3G is similar, but video and audio playback is better on the iPhone. Standby time is better on the Desire. And the iOS is coded specifically for the hardware in the iPhone while the Desire is using an OS that is much less hardware specific. Android runs on lots of phone hardware and is only somewhat optimized for each. And both have essentially the same battery capacity (1420 iPhone vs 1400 Desire).

Having said that, even if the battery life is lower on the Desire, what's wrong with a car charger or other sources of power? I had a car charger and a USB cable at work to charge the iPhone 3G if needed. I have a car charger for the Desire too...no biggie.
This thread is responding to the question "Which would you get for free?"
"I believe I already answered that question Senator".
:D
Seriously, if I was given a free phone, I'd take the Desire without hesitation. I dislike iTunes and the lack of customization on the iPhone. And the iPhone really does lose signal and drop calls/data in weak signal areas whereas my Desire continues to work fine. If I can't make a phone call or send a text, what good is the phone?

The CPU units are about the same, but the iPhone 4 has a better GPU section, which makes it a tad faster in graphics heavy apps. The Samsung Galaxy S series also has a similar CPU, but again has a very good GPU section which works better than either in graphics heavy apps and games (and is a significant reason why it scores higher in benchmarks over the Desire). Upcoming chipsets from Qualcomm will have impressive graphics capabilities along with faster CPUs and even dual core chips. I believe Samsung is also working on dual cores.
 Wow!
I also hear that new battery formulas are being developed to run these power hungry monsters. The latest battery will be using cold fusion technology and will be half the size of current packs.

if it is for free....
like someone said before... Get iPhone4, sell it to some screaming fanboy (from faraway country who doesn't receive iPhone yet is preferable) for higher price than where you live if possible.
then buy Desire instead with some money to spare.

and the spare money you get? get the new iPod touch instead... then you might get the best of both world. (^^)b

I would go desire as it has automatic text reflow making the internet experience best. Couple with flash its a easy choice fire me.

As a smart phone desire is best for me. Iphone is a better games console, but games don't interest me much on phones.

Screen on iphone4 didn't blow me away, colours seemed washed out compared to my oled desire display. Personal preference I know.

Downside of desire is phone memory even after froyo for me, and I have done force apps to sd thing. Don't want to root to sort this out ever.

Looking forward to two generations time when I will go android again for sure unless apple do something amazing to take the crown.

iPhones don't really appeal to me, it's all hype. I do have an iPod touch that I paid $160 for so I can buy music albums instead of going to a store for CD's that I'm only goin to use once. What bugs me about most Apple products is the proprietary components, you can't remove the battery and replace it with a new one and such, iPod's battery life is horrible. And the iOS UI is bland, boring and too noob friendly and I even jailbroke my iPod.

I'm noticing almost everywhere on TV you see a MacBook Pro in front of someone (be it a talk show, TV show/movie, sports/news cast, etc) it's like Apple is paying these people to flash the silver laptop with the Apple logo on the back of it.

There's just way too many reasons to go with the Desire or any other smartphone besides an Apple, the removable SDcard is a huge plus, 32GB cards can be cheap. The price difference here is Desire $79/449 (Telus throws in a 8GB SDcard rather than a standard 4GB) vs 16GB iPhone 4 for $179/699 or 32GB iPhone for $269/$749, waaaaaaay out of my range. Also bugs me that when I step into Future Shop, the Source or Best Buy an employee comes up to me while I'm in the cell phone section and says "we have iPhones in stock" right away.
