SE Product Blog Announces 2.1 from End Oct

Not the best news...but at least it puts us out of our misery checking for updates every day.

The only thing that worries me is that this delayed September update is now moved to the end of October, what does that mean for the update that was planned in December. Is that going to be pushed back too??

I'm sure it is worth the wait as it can only improve an already great phone in my eyes but it's just annoying having to wait even longer...maybe they'll throwing in 16 million colours display as a bonus :p

As you say... a blow.

A phased roll out from the end of October means, as mentioned in the blog, that some users on unbranded handsets could be waiting even longer whilst those on branded handsets will have to wait longer still until their operator installs their bits and pieces on it before release.

Realistically some handsets will not receive 2.1, or SE's version of it, until next year.

Just phoned my friend with the news and she's "gutted" as she's on Orange UK who are not noted for getting new firmware out quickly.

i like the "key" changes:

Xperia X10:
  • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
  • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
  • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online
nothing really new there apart from the hd camera

backup and restore is already there!!

A very long wait for....nothing!!

Yeah, it's not really adding a great deal to our X10's, i think it it more of an enhancement to an already great phone for me.

The HD recording with continuous auto focus as per the Vivaz should be impressive (well the video's i've seen of the Vivaz are) but the main improvement for me will be the apps not available to use on 1.6 such as LauncherPro and a few games (that I can't remember at the moment :p).

Am also hoping it may get rid of a slight lag I have when playing games from time to time.

Damn, I just came here to post about that lol :p. Just had to write it on me blog first lol.

I've been checking like, literally every hour this week, so at least I don't have to do that now but this is a HUGE let down and i'm very disappointed. I was already considering selling my X10 for a Desire. My partner sold hers and i wish she hadnt. I'm sick of this piece of junk, to the point that I also want to sell my sony blogs  im that angry. Doesnt help that ive just learned that the updates are pointless anyway as it seems the X10 won't support flash/adobe flash wont support non multi touch handsets. Stupidly I went into a contract with this phone as well, so wish i hadnt now, its just more bad news after bad news with this phone.

(also, im not going to post the link but, do i sound too angry in my blog post about the delay? i very was upset and angry when posting it - blog is in ma sig :p lol. my partners not home to check with :s).

well in the great words of the dragons den, im out ! too many letdowns with this phone so its time to get something else a little more up to date with the optimised kernel in froyo. if only se hadnt locked the bootloader so much as with an optimised rom this phone would be the beast it promised to be. personally as a linux user i can appreciate the added performance a new kernel brings which seems to be where se and i disagree, so sorry folks, its been fun reading this forum but after that news its time for me to leave.

See, it wouldn't bother me so much if they were delaying so they could do something useful with the update, I was just saying previously that I wouldn't mind a month or two delay if it meant we'd be getting 2.2 instead. But I guess SE is only halfway psychic and picked up just the first half of that statement :p

That said, I'm not THAT irate. I actually have a HTC Desire running 2.2 (a faulty one from ebay that gave me so much trouble I got fed up and bought the X10 as it's the best Android phone available from my carrier), and to be honest with you the extra stuff it can do isn't really all that impressive to the typical user. I mean I turned off Live Wallpapers because it was a resource hog that lost its appeal after a week or so, and every single app I actually used frequently works on 1.6. The only things it's really hurting for we aren't getting anyway, like Flash support and multi touch. I guess we'll have to wait for the bootloader crack for these things.

It seems that the SE developers have spent more time making the bootloader secure than getting the X10 software running smoothly.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the XDA Dev's crack the bootloader and give us the phone that SE should have in the beginning...time will tell but I have a feeling it's worth sticking with.

So as i was working to work today, (I'm in Toronto) down by the Sony Arts & Performing Centre, there's seems to be a Sony Board Members meeting for Sony Entertainment/Pictures/Ericsson.

If you want to go harass the big boys, now's the day to do it. :D

Just gimme 2.1 so i can connect to the car's system via BT for god's sake for phone calls. My Windows mobile 6.1 phone did it with no issues.

Please don't shoot the messenger! Keep it clean, respectful and calm guys. At least we have some definite news now.

so im just wondering if these same udates will apply to ATT in the US. i had a blackberry 9000 with ATT which was running OS 4.6..and then nearly a year after the official release OS 5.0 finally went came to ATT. so i guess my question is, will ATT see these updates the same time everyone else will? im still wondering if i should just take my phone back and get the new iphone or the blackberry torch..but i really like this phone because the camera is so effing intense..anyways, if anyone has any answers or anything let me know..thanks

well, I'm dizzy now, I've no sooner read that the update will be "sooner than you think" and now it's Oct/Nov/some time in my lifetime (hopefully).

I feel much the same as Kersey, in so much as I am not too concerned about 5 screens (I already have 7) or back up and restore (I already back up), but what I do want to do is to be able to download apps for 2.1.

I must have at least 20 apps that I am waiting to download but can't until the phone runs 2.1.

One last gripe, if I kept to my deadlines the way SE do, I would pretty soon find myself out of a job.
