apps starting by themselves driving me CRAZY!

The biggest problem that I am having on the droid is the amount of apps that are loading themselves without me touching the phone. I am not talking about the os apps like google talk services or the ones that have widgets running. They are constantly wasting my resources and battery. For example, I ended all tasks and then started creating this thread. Now I checked them again and facebook (which I never opened a single time), music, camera, fml, imeem, last.fm, mototorch, music, pandora, slacker, and youtube are all running when I never opened them and do not have widgets going either.

Now I have read all the people saying it doesn't matter on android and the memory handles itself which one I don't believe because I can see a huge difference when playing a game and as it gets more noticeable I keep checking and more apps have started in the background. I end them and go back to the game and it runs smooth again. But even if this truly is the case I don't understand why this happens in the first place unless its only something with mine. I have seen all the threads about apps starting themselves but those only talked about calender and stuff like that which I understand since a lot of programs probly pull from that in the background. But nobody really seemed to say that downloaded apps kept doing it by themselves. So I thought maybe its just mine, my girlfriend has the eris and she doed not have this problem. I should also note I tried startup auditor, but it would not stop any of the purchased apps.

Other than this, I must say even coming from iphone, I love android and will never go back! Just want to know if other people are having this problem.

I'm interested in hearing what people have to say. I don't have very many apps on my phone (yet), but haven't seen many of them start on their own.

The only one I see that will start itself uncommanded is AK Notepad. I have the Weather Channel app and FB installed, and they are running but they were manually initiated.

I would like to be able to disable some of the core apps from running, too. Corporate Calendar keeps starting, but I do not have it configured, nor do I have an Exchange account configured. I also have HandCent SMS installed, but the Messaging app keeps running.

uhh this has been talked about at length... the phone handles memory differently... just because it shows up in task killer doesnt mean that it is actually doing anything with your resources... there have been numerous threads about people removing task killing apps and the result is that the phone run smoother... i did and havent looked back... let the phone run the way it was designed to

Like I stated in my original post, I have read all of those and have also read the counter arguments to them. I also stated that I can see a huge difference in performance after killing them. I have not heard a reason why the phone starts apps without you telling it to do so. And even if I did not notice the performance difference, when checking the battery info these apps that are running that I never told to start are using my battery as well. I do not see a benefit to random apps constantly loading, even if you were to make the argument that it is so they load faster when u do use them it should still be your option. Specially when it is starting things like youtube and facebook which I don't even use but came with the phone.

The only non-standard app I have installed that *might* be behaving like the experience described in the OP is SportsTap. However, I think that when I originally used it, I may have set it up to automatically pull scores on a pre-defined interval. So even though I no longer have the app running or have a widget on my home screen, the app's preference may be such that it auto-starts in order to update itself.

Is it possible this issue describes your scenario as well? If so, perhaps you could clear caches and uninstall the 3rd party apps in question, and then reinstall them to see how they behave in their unaltered states.

yes i'm having problems with HTC HERO.
apps / programs always auto-launching. i have to use advanced taskiller all the time to see and close what's running. i also know it affects speed and lag on the phone, so find it very annoying, although in general i agree that android is pretty great, as is the htc hero.

I use an app called "Autostarts"-an app that requires root- to control these things. There are all sorts of events(Phone boot, changes in signal state, battery state, another similar program being initiated, emails coming in,waking the phone frome sleep... and many more) that cause apps to start up. The Market itself starts apps sometimes when checking for updates. It is all part of Android trying to do everything for you, therefore spposaedly making it convenient.

Also, whether apps are using CPU resources or not.. they are using system resources(memory) if they are showing up in a Task Killer(Even when just sitting there doing nothing). If you have lots of apps installed, this has the same negative effect as not having enough memory in your PC- read BOG DOWN..

Autostarts lets you control what apps start and when..BUT needs to be used with caution. It is best to leave the apps you know you will be using and have doubts as to breaking their functionality alone. Autostarts also lets you stop syaystem apps from being started(CorpCal, etc.), but warns you that they are system apps before you tap OK. Of course with root, you can get rid of otherwise unneeded things like Corpcal, Amazon MP3, etc.

Long story short, as with many other so-called "issues" with Droid and Android itself, rooting is the only solution.

And as should be said.. yes I understand rooting is not for everyone, and not everyone wants to root.

Edited for content..

There are several ways..

They can be renamed/removed with terminal/adb commands, or the same by an app called Root Explorer, or even Astro if the ROM you use has a Godmode script. I believe a few of the root-related apps can uninstall system apps almost like any other also.

My best suggestion is to look into the Stickies in the all things root section and learn all you can before rooting. There are plenty of chortcuts to get you started, but if you get into a jam or want to do some extra personalization it is good to know the basics, especially so you don't goof things up. Backing up before changing things is key..
