Where the hell is Nokia with the smartphone craze?

Wasn't Nokia pretty much the top dog in cell phones for several years? I haven't heard a peep out of them since my Samsung e315 was still cool. I'd love to see them introduce an Android phone.

They have Maemo so its unclear if they will release an android phone.

I have heard they were going to release an android notebook though..

eh I some degree respect their choice..

there are quite a few issues to cross when coming up with an android phone.

Would they create their own UI?

How would the hardware differ?

What would be the advantage of going nokia over any other manufacturer?

I just don't see it being a great idea in the long term to come out with another device when everyone and their grandma already knows about it and wants one...

I would love to see a solid release from nokia.. but, I don't think they can really be frowned upon for their choice..

Agreed, the hardware is barely more than a place to hold the OS at this point, just like computers. I brought this up because Nokia has such a reputation for attention to detail and build quality that I would love to own an Android phone with their name on it. I drive only Hondas for a reason, and I would buy a Nokia phone for the same reason.

Don't mistake me! I agree with you.

Nokia is excellent.

I am actually disappointed the x10 from sony hasn't had a warmer receiving and wasn't a better product..

However, I would buy a nokia android in a heartbeat (so long as it was on my network)...

However, it makes sense they are not jumping on board.. too many cooks spoil the broth.

Google makes android - Phone manufacturer changes it - carriers impose restrictions which should not exist (I'm looking at you fail t&t.) and then anyone who is a serious android fan gets dissappointed.

Which it works for tmo/sprint.. but, at&t and verizon is where i'm sure they would want their product to be..and it just doesn't seem like it will work.

Something like an Android OS(as untouched as possible) phone with the Nokia e90's keyboard sliding out of it would be awesome.

Nokia is working with Intel on MeeGo, another Linux-based OS like Maemo, so they have their own thing going on, so don't look to them to release an Android handset. But they are still there and making smartphones, but for some reason, they don't market them in the US. A friend of mine loves Nokia, and her last 2 phones have been Nokia smartphones. Current one is an N900, and both it and her previous phone (don't remember the model) were both purchased unlocked from Europe for $600, because it was the only way she could get them. Seems like Nokia is really missing the mark by pretty much ignoring the US market, because they have some nice phones.

By the way, since the Nokia smartphones are running a Linux variant in Maemo/Symbian, you can install Android onto them. Do a Google search, looks like people actually have put Android onto the e90, although I'm not sure how vanilla the Android version is. But I imagine you could get a vanilla kernel or whatever on there if you wanted to.

I hope although unlikely nokia does come up with some decent competition...

I think Nokia is far more popular overseas than here in the US. Not once have I ever seen anyone running a Maemo phone, but it's apparently the #1 smartphone OS.

The #1 smartphone(by volume) is symbian, which is used on various Nokia handsets, and has been around for many years.

Maemo has only been released on 1smartphone handset so far, the N900. Previously it was on Nokia's tablets, which were WiFi, or BT tether only. Maemo is essentially dead, with a transition to MeeGo for future smartphones.

There is three upcoming smartphones that Nokia will soon release, they are still polishing their own OS though. Think you can call it symbian v.2.

Well, since Nokia is finnish brand it will be more popular in Europe vs America.

Oh yeah, that's right. They're both Nokia, I just got them mixed up.

Although many people say "symbian feels dated"

I must admit.. I advidly loved my e71x.

I felt that it was very very easy to use, I felt ovi suit on my pc was far better than samsungs utter crap for the impression, or apples craptunes..

I loved the nokia experience.. However, I can't say I would go back to it.. if I had a hard limit of 250$ to spend on a phone? maybe.. If I wasn't interested in development of applications? well yeah...

If I didn't worry about phone widgets? absolutely..

But, I love the freedom of android.
