Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

@GreatBigDog: Just to clarify, the file they are pointing you to (and it's the same place they tried to send me via email) is NOT Android 1.5.

It is a big fix/security patch _for_ 1.5. For some reason customer support seems to think this is 1.6. But it is neither 1.5 nor 1.6.

I specifically pointed this out to Sherri from the office of the president that customer service is sending people to the wrong info.

You need to elevate your email to the next level. Go here: Contact Rogers - Call Us, Email Us, Send Mail and go to Step 3. Send an email via their form to the office of the president, and indicate the name of the person from whom you got the email.

In this case, don't bother asking when 1.6 is coming, just point out that you asked about 1.6, and that the support person is incorrectly sending you to the bug fix/security patch and telling you it's 1.6 when it's not.

Sent an email off to the OTP in regards to the email I received from their CSR.
Hello, I corresponded through email with one of your CSR'S in regards to the availability of the Android 1.6 update for my Dream. Your CSR although trying to be helpful pointed me to the security patch that you have for version 1.5. this is a patch and is neither 1.5 or 1.6. The link that I received in my email is Redirect to the right page I was told to enter the information for my device to download the new version of Android.

Either your CSR's are misinformed as to the content of the patch and are thinking that this is an update or their is a mistake on your website, either way I didn't get my question on the availability of Android 1.6 answered. Someone is going to have to either make sure that your CSR's have the correct information or fix your web site so that your customers are not being incorrectly informed.

The reference number that was given to me on the reply from Danielle D. is 42463681

Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Don Rayner

I have pursued this matter with HTC and they assure me that it is roger's responsibility to provide me with the update to my phone.

This update has been available from other carriers since October 1st.

Quick update: Jesse Hirsh (tech writer for CBC) got back to me via Twitter rr Rogers and Android 1.6/paid apps. I messaged him back with a link to this thread.

Hopefully he will find this interesting, since it is both a business issue, and a tech issue. Rogers is selling phones based on the notion that they are cutting edge tech, but aren't really supporting them. This is holding us back technologically compared to other countries, and is disingenuous on their part as far as their commitment to their customers.

Just to clarify for anyone following this: Rogers not updating to 1.6 is _Rogers_ fault. Not having access to paid apps is _Google's_ fault, but Rogers could be doing more (in concert with other carriers) to push Google for this.

ALSO:

I just sent tweets to both @RogersMary and @RogersHelps with the following:

"Your CSRs are giving users WRONG info re Android 1.6. It is NOT available on Rogers site but this is what they are telling us."

We'll see what they say. Also, if you look at @RogersMary's page, a LOT of people are pestering her re Android 1.6! http://twitter.com/RogersMary

In response to my tweet:
GreatBigDog01: @RogersHelps I need Andrioid 1.6 update for my HTC Dream to use Google Maps Navigation. When will you have the update available?

This is what I get back:
RogersHelps: @GreatBigDog01 Hi Dan. We evaluate all updates HTC makes available for our product and we will inform customers of upgrades if applicable

I sent this back to RogersHelps

@RogersHelps You did not answer my question. Didn't ask to be informed. I asked when it will be available. Please answer question asked.

And here is the responce

@GreatBigDog01 Sorry Don, I misunderstood. Unfortunately, I can't discuss updates before they may or may not be released.

We'll see what they say. Also, if you look at @RogersMary's page, a LOT of people are pestering her re Android 1.6! Mary @ Rogers (RogersMary) on Twitter

Sent @RogersMary a tweet 3 hours ago and still haven't heard back from her. She must be busy with all that pestering. Or maybe they will just start ignoring us.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants the updates this much.

I'm so sick of Rogers providing such poor customer service and reliability in terms of updates. Updates are a big thing and can totally make the phone a whole new animal dependent upon the update.

I, too, do not want to use the ROMs, as I'm afraid I would brick the phone.

Rogers! I'd go to Telus after my contract is up, but they don't use simcards right? My HTC Magic would be useless.

@GreatBigDog: Ask them if they are testing 1.6 in-house yet.

Sherri tells us they won't have it till end of Dec, but Mary tells us they are testing it now. We need to call them out. They are feeding us BS cause they didn't even seem to know 1.6 was available from HTC until we started pestering them.

WOW

I sent this Tweet
@RogersHelps Any chance that you have Android 1.6 in house being tested? Just need to know if I need to look at alternatives to Rogers.

And right after that twitter crashed, it's still not working. Any chance Rogers is taking control of twitter to avoid all the tweets. ;)

You don't have to wait till your contract is up. If they failed to give us support, that's a breach of contract and we should be able to terminate the contract without penalty.

Yeah, it's been up and down the last little while. Last I checked it was up.

Just wondering: since Andorid 1.6 has been deployed to many devices why Rogers wants to test it and why HTC cannot just publish it in their web site?
I don’t want to invent new conspiracy theory but it look like some tension, politics or money issue between these two companies.
Anyway I have paid (and continue to pay) my money to Rogers and I want to get update of free (!!!) operating system for my phone.

Hi,

I'm using an unlocked Rogers Magic on AT&T in the US. As such, I'm totally dependent on Rogers posting any updates on their website. My only other option is to root my phone and I'm not sure I want to do this for several reasons.

Because I'm not a Rogers customer, I have no standing with them. However I wish you folks the best of luck in your quest for adequate support from Rogers.

Thanks for your efforts!

Thank you Andy2010.

Yes, I know the technical details :\
This is just really sad to feel myself like “second priority customer” when nobody cares, nobody listen and nobody gives clears answers (I mean Rogers representatives).
If it takes so long to bring version 1.6 how long it will take to bring 2.0 and further?
Something doesn’t work with sales model adopted by Rogers. Guys, if you don’t want to support branded phones please release them and give ability of OTA update.

RogersMary replied to my tweet about CSRs giving out the wrong info about Android 1.6 being available for download from Rogers site. Here is her reply:

"RogersMary
@mjsoctober Interesting. Thanks for letting me know Michael. I'll try to get that information to the right person. Appreciate it!"

My reply to her:

"mjsoctober
@RogersMary Considering I told Sherri (office of the prez) last week and it's still happening, I'm not hopeful. You need a CSR meeting ;-)"

Here is the reply exactly as I received it. Read into it what you will, but the wink says much with actually saying anything.
@GreatBigDog01 Hey Don. I can't discuss before it may/not be released but I'll update when I can. I wouldn't kept this to myself ;-)
