sept 16th update killed my battery life!

yea i went to running services and did notice media server service was running, so i stopped that and will recharge and monitor.

I just checked & it was running for me too so I killed that, te sprint hotspot, & gtalk srvcs (even though I'm not even logged into gtalk  ). I have it on the charger now so I'll see how it goes after a full charge.

alright so I was reading on the evo forums and they are having the same problems as us... one thing that I noticed is that my phone is not going into sleep mode since the update. its running 100% of the time just with the screen off.

This seems to be the problem.

On the evo forums they seem to think that the talk app by google is causing it not to sleep along with some other.
Can someone who has not done the update go to menu>applications>running services and let me know what you have running there?

the Talk app is constantly popping up along with the media hub, and amazonMP3. I am hoping that if we can get rid of these that the phone will sleep and it will improve our battery life

SO... I've had the same problems as most of you on this thread. Skip down, if you want to know what I did...

My story:
Purchased phone-
First week: battery lasting 3-6 hours, with heavy use, but that was normal, to break in the battery.
Second week: battery lasted ~22-25 hours, with moderate use and once/day charging
Third week (after the eclair update on Sept 17): battery was horrible, lasting ~4-12 hours, with moderate use
Talked online/and on the phone w/Samsung rep- said to go buy a new battery (nope, not going to spend more money). Went to a sprint store, four of the sales ppl didn't even know what an eclair update was (disappointing), referred me to a technical support store.

My solution:
My friend recommended for me to do a factory reset, but I didn't because I didn't want to lose all of my data and pictures/etc. :p so i waited to see if the battery would get better. But, I backed up my files onto a computer (plug your phone into a usb port, then mount your device, then mass storage- just drag and dump whatever files you deem necessary). I reset my phone last night, in hopes that maybe it would work better. Someone on the sprint forum also recommended for me to do this. I have had the phone unplugged for 5 hours today (usually it would be dying by now), and it's still at 85% after a full charge!!!

SOOooOOooo... go back up your files onto a computer and factory reset your phone, see if this works for you! Home Screen> Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset.

BUT, if you are afraid that this will not work... I will update you in a couple of days, to confirm that this solution has worked, if you don't want to risk doing this and it not working (and having to redo everything on your phone). I will keep you all updated, but it looks like it's working so far.

Let me know if you have any questions!!! ;)

I have heard this fixes the issue but letting go of all my data is a bummer. maybe I will do this though. It may be worth it..

I'll try it tonight and let you guys know what I find.

Oh yeah- another thing to remember to do, before you do a reset: I wrote a list of all the apps that I downloaded (bc they'll be deleted), so I could easily reinstall all of them without having to try to remember what apps I had. An easy way to do this is: Market > Menu > Downloads (then just write this list down).

Yeah, that's why I was so reluctant to do this- but, I'd rather have a working phone than not risking to reinstall everything. Let me know how it works for you too! If you just want to wait, I'll let you know tomorrow if it works for me.. So you don't have to risk doing it to your phone. ;)

ya man please do. Let me know if you are getting any drop at all while in airplane mode. before the sept 16th update. I was not getting any drop while it was in airplane mode... now I get 2-3% per hour loss

I think the main issue is the 100% awake time. mine now does this periodically after the update. It shows android system is keeping the phone awake. I tried killing everything, no change. I then did a factory reset and still not fixed.

I just started a new thread about this...

Many of us have experienced some battery life fall out since the last update. I mentioned this in the battery life thread but I thought it deserved it own topic

I have an app that I downloaded called battery status.

it has a battery history. and it says time without sleeping 7h 10m 25s ago.

Thats exactally when I unplugged my phone. This explains why I am seeing 2-3% per hour loss while not using the phone and while in airplane mode. Before the update I could keep the phone in airplane mode, not usre it, and leave work with over 94% battery life. So this proves that somehow the phone is not going into sleep mode... I can guarantee that everyone else in that is experiencing battery drain since the sept 16th update is due to this reason.

The question is... why the hell is this happening and why won't the phone go into sleep mode?

any ideas?

I don't know. As I posted in the update thread, my battery life is actually a lot better! I get almost a full day out of it now. Before, it would go dead overnight sitting on the nightstand. Now, I get up in the morning and still have over 80%..closer to 90%. So, I don't know why everyone else is having problems. I didn't change any settings or anything other than install the update.

I had the same problem after the update. My battery would drop 40-50% overnight. Pre-update it would drop 5-10% overnight. Spare Parts showed Android System running 100% of the time under partial wake usage. My CPU was partying the night away, lol.

I went to Settings: Running Services: Android System. A service called IQ Agent was running under Android System. I googled it, but couldn't find out which program it was from, but the process "android.iqd" came up in my searches. I assumed they were related. There was some mention on SDX Developers of that process running amok on the Moment, so maybe it's a Samsung thing?

Anyways, I bit the bullet and killed Android IQ Agent. Everything still runs fine on my phone. It doesn't seem to come back unless I reboot the phone (I don't use a task killer, although I may start now, lol). My battery life is now back to it's pre-update levels.

I have seen this process running. However when I stop this process my phone still won't go into sleep mode. One thing that I did notice is that when my battery life gets to around 30 percent the phone will go in to sleep mode I wonder what the issue is.

Oddly... I rebooted my phone last night and since then, it's been sleeping OK. My time running today since unplugging it at 9:00 this morning is about 12%. Battery is still over 50% according to spare parts after 12 hours of normal usage (normal for me at least).

I really want to know what was hanging up and keeping the phone awake. I don't like it when thinks just magically fix themselves.

This has happened to me as well. However the problem returned later. I also noticed that my phone is laggy when this is happening. I have no idea what the problem is but I think I am going to turn my phone in for am evo before my thirty days are up. I can't take this anymore.

:(
So I did a factory reset (no, it won't reset before the update) about three days ago. My battery HAS been a little bit better - from 6 hours average with moderate use to 8-10 hours with little use... My gosh. So upset about this now.
I've tried what taylormah (?) suggested- and killed the DRM application running... But, it doesn't seem to help my battery out at all...
I can't believe I'm paying so much money for a phone that doesn't even last a day (with little use).

So I went to the sprint store today, they did a diagnosis and said they couldn't fix the problem (didn't even tell me what the problem was), and that they're just going to order me a new battery for next week (but by then, I will only have 2 days until my 30 days of satisfaction run out- is that how they plan it?!?!). I'm pretty sad right now. I'm wondering if I should just cancel my service.....

Read this post. Can you get the phone replaced?? That guy said his replacement phone from 10.09 build date has been doing much better in terms of battery life. Also, read this post. I hope this could help.

Update to my post above (#3). After a week or so, my battery life seems almost back to normal. I didn't do any reset, but I may have let the battery run down completely once before recharging (phone says it's been 'up' for 6 1/2 days, though, so maybe not).

~6 hrs since unplugging this morning and I'm probably at ~85-90% (though minimal usage). Interestingly, 'Cell Standby' has now become the #1 consumer of juice over 'Display'.
