Breaking News - Update Does Not Contain GPS Fix

We'll have to agree to disagree here, as I completely disagree with your view point. If the faulty gps is enough for you to repeatedly complain about it on an internet forum, then in my opinion, you should have taken it back for another phone.

There are other options out there, even on At&t. Rather then keeping a phone that you are clearly unhappy with, why not try a different handset.

I feel like if you are keeping the phone while at the same time knowing its flaws, that you are as much the problem as samsung/at&t.

Now hold on just a minute Shelbster. By the time I found out the GPS had a problem, I was close to the end of my 30 days and Samsung promised a quick fix and the ATT rep. I talked to also thought one was forthcoming. Now that I am past my 30 days, we are finding out this might not be an easy fix. Now I can't return the phone.

I have to stay with AT&T for coverage and I want an Android phone. I won't buy an iPhone and RIM is nice for messaging but also not for me. The only other real option is the HTC Aria. Nice little phone but not comparable to the Captivate. (I bet the GPS works though.)

I bought a phone that is advertised as having working GPS hardware. Is this the only thing I use my phone for? Absolutely not. Do I love the other features of the Captivate? I sure do. Did the promise of a fix from Samsung still weigh heavily on my decision to keep the two phones in my house? It sure did. Is it fair for many here to be upset, want Samsung to make good on their promise of a functioning GPS and still like enough of the rest of the phone to have kept it past 30 days? It sure is. Am I not sure what you don't get? Yes, that is correct.

So, instead of belittling people for gripping, why not just read another thread? Hmm, Even I can't answer that one. :D

BTW I spoke to samsung support again today and he told me that even though I searched for the update manually and installed it with no issues that the update will not be complete until I get a message that the update has been "PUSHED" to my phone. What the hell does this even mean? I downloaded the update, accepted it , it then installed, no errors or problems, phone rebooted itself, GPS still broken . so what was the phone doing while it said it was installing new software? this is
total BS.

You raise a GREAT issue here. Others are saying there are TWO(2) updates. One that can be pulled down the JH7 firmware and one that can only be pushed out. I've read this on 3 forums now.

So, has anyone here had the update pushed to them and had the GPS work or has everyone like me only been pulling down the JH7 firmware?

Thanks.

I just cant believe the amount of misinformation. It contains the fix, it doesnt...I have heard both from att and samsung. I was even told that the only way turn by turn will ever work on a captivate is if I pay for navigator. That GPS intentionally will not work unless I pay for navigator in that the navigator program is setup to enable it to work and without paying for it its intentionally reduced in function. No I didnt buy that but I wouldnt put anything past att.

I know call centers suck but I have never in my life in any situation saw a more disorganized bunch of crap. Does it contain the fix or not. What is the problem. This is all basic information that should be easy to obtain.

I've used AT&T Navigator for about three years, recently with a BB 8900. Navigator always worked very well on the BB. When I purchased the Captivate I kept the AT&T Navigator app assuming it would work as well on the Captivate as the BB - NOT SO, AT ALL. Do not think that signing up for Navigator will fix your GPS problems - it won't. Although Navigator will generate a route from my location to wherever it loses signal constantly and begins reprogramming a new route. :(

I've done the update, I'm running a stock, unrooted phone. GPS was lousy before the update and I see no change at all after the update.

I cancelled my AT&T Navigator service today ($9.99/month) until this GPS issue gets fixed.

This isn't anything remotely resembling a hardware issue.

It is a FIRMWARE issue.

BIG difference.

A hardware issue, wouldn't get a "fix", except a mass recall.

If this was fixed you might be right... I think this is a hardware issue Samsung hopes to mask through software/firmware.

I am sorry to hear everyone is still having issues with this. I flashed the JH7 firmware when it was first leaked (over a month ago), then returned my captivate the following day after discovering it didn't help the GPS.

My advice:
-Return the phone. Even if you are past your 30 days, call ATT customer service and throw a shit fit until they agree to take the phone back.
-If you are stuck with ATT, get an Aria (if not, you've got some great phones available from sprint or verizon). The only drawback I see is the size and resolution of the screen. I quickly got over those drawbacks.
*GPS works great! Locks quickly and accurately and I never get rerouted with navigation unless I actually make a wrong turn.
*No lag. The processor might be slower but there is much less lag with the sense UI.
*It's HTC - known for their quality products and better customer support.
*If you want froyo, you can flash the CM6 ROM. It's what I'm running. As a result, I am getting Quadrant benchmarks in the 900s (higher than the captivate)

No, I am not an HTC troll... But I had a Captivate and my wife had a Vibrant. Both were taken back when I realized they aren't likely to ever get fully functioning GPS.

Also, there were some people on this forum who would have classified me as the kind of person who would always find something to complain about regarding my phone. But no... I love the Aria.

I'm heading into the store today. I'll see what they have to say about everything. My last experience left me speechless. AT&T blamed Samsung. Samsung blamed AT&T. I got fed up and hung up. I do NOT want to exchange my phone because I have no other issues other than the GPS. I've been able to get a lock just ONCE after the update. Now i can't. I see a total of 3-5 satellites and can't lock to any of them. My phone doesn't randomly shut down, no other major issues, etc. etc.

Ok let's forget about the gps issue but should I be pissed that after the update my swype keyboard started acting crazy. Slow and printing words I didn't type. My wifi is only picking up one or no bars. When it was a steady 3 downstairs. Now I need to be by the router to have a excellent signal.
My browser is slow has crap I keep getting loss data try again. My apps take 5 to 10 seconds to work. If I scroll it takes off by itself and goes to the top, bottom, or side to side. My battery is draining in 4 hours. I have to sit with it plugged into the wall or car.
Or should I thank At&trash for a fantastic update and viewing experience. Im feeling sorry for bashing the torch when I got this. The only thing this phone has not busted like my BB did. Also now my e-mail says loading all the time. Even the maildroid isn't working right
Oh did I mention my gps still doesn't work. Thought I use a tom tom and realize the phone ain't has good. But still 3blocks away from where I am is un acceptable.

How to be a forum troll:
1. Make a thread that describes a problem with a product, every two days
2. read every post
3. post about how you are tired of reading posts about people happy with their product or people who question why you dont just get rid of the phone instead of you keep posting about it over and over in a bitter negative way and dont listen to any solutions
4. *completely* miss the irony in your post.
5. FACEPALM
6. Mention over and over how you are getting an iPhone because they work so great
7. Stay on the forum and keep complaining about the product long after you no longer have the phone in question

Fixed

Interesting, I hope that's true. I pulled down JH7.

Agree that people are taking this to far but, aside from GPS being a LUXURY on a phone it screws every app that depends on gps, like one of my favs The google Places app. Cannot find restaurants, atms, hotels and such where I am, because it thinks I am 50 MILES, from where I am. On that note my wifes Iphone is more accurate than our Garmin. Infact the GPS on my old eternity was excellent, it was the only gps I ever used period. I think a $559.00 phone should definitely come with a functioning GPS as well as a chauffeur.

Err, actually it's 199 on upgrade. 559 is the unsubsidized price that nobody pays, same as the iphone is at least 599 (Captivate's actually 499). But you knew that.

Actually it's usually available for 149 at Wal Mart.

Actually I've seen it for 99 or 1 cent at Amazon

Actually it's one of the cheaper high end smartphones around. Droid X for example is 299 on upgrade, with $100 rebate (and we all know the issues with rebates) bringing it to 199, same as the Captivate with no rebate.

If you wanted to get technical.

Wow....here's one. Just got back from the AT&T store. One guy was bringing his phone back in because the update bricked it. I sat my Captivate right next to the manager's captivate. First thing he did was check to see if I had JH7. We both had stock, jh7, no frills.. I downloaded the GPS test app and the other one that allows you to get into GPS settings. I pulled down one satellite. His phone, which was literally right next to mine, pulled down 10 and locked to 4 or 5.

Long story short, account noted and they'll exchange past 30 days if the next update doesn't work.

I would agree with all of these except my Captivate and I've seen some others consistently get scores in the 900s without the lag fix and running 2.1.
With the lag fix at least 2100 and often 2200 before Froyo.

Actually it was $199 on signing a new contract, $559 was the buy it now price the first day of launch, salesman told me if I was not  happy with the price I could get it on amazon for $599. I got it the day it came out in New York. But you didnt know that.

Actually it was NOT available at wal-mart the day it comes out. Not where I live. But you didnt know that either.

Actually the 99 cent deals were not around when I got my phone, and its lucky for you because on the basis of monetary value, it would be pretty sad you get to compare a $300 phone to a 99cent phone :(. But you didnt think about that.

actually you making a absolutely baseless statement like the galaxy is one of the cheaper, high end phones and using a technicality to make the droid seem like it cost more is pretty insane, considering you are doing EXACTLY what you are implying I am doing (fluffing the price). Actually other than the GPS Issue, this phone is perfect and really dont see how it runs second to any other phone as long as it has every feature you want. (camera flash, not important to ME) .
The only reason I mentioned that price was to express that if you were to pay full price, you would want a fully working device. But you didnt pick up on that.

BTW the captivate spanks just about ANY phone out right now with the lag fix 2200-2650 quadrant score. Oh and hows that display on the X? Not a SUPER amoled display. But you knew that.

If you want to get technical:D

I know, I wish someone would comment that has had the update pushed to them as opposed to manually pulling it down. Hasn't anyone received the update via text message?

I have read posts on multiple forums now that supposedly Samsung is telling people there is another part to the update that isn't the JH7 firmware. I'd like to find out if anyone's had it pushed and how their GPS is working.

Bueller........................Bueller.........................Bueller....................

Don't go past your 30 days believing Samsung is going to resolve the GPS issue, I don't expected them to do so anytime soon. If you visit their Twitter and Facebook pages, they've stop responding to GPS complaints and Froyo questions. I'm starting to wonder if a recall is in the works. They probably hoped whatever was in last week's update would quiet the masses but it only made it worse.

Thanks for the heads up, but if you notice in phone description at the left, I have taken it back already. Been following closely though, being anxious to repurchase.

Looks like I'm about to enter a tougher decision. Nothing else on AT&T interests me (Aria too small). So its continue to wait for somethign, or move to Verizon, which I really don't want to do, but am considering.

Today I read the "tweet" below, and wondered if it might be true. Personally, I'm skeptical:

"I spoke to a Samsung support person today regarding installing the update and still having GPS problems and got this response: The update received via forcing the download (via settings>software update) does NOT include the "GPS fix", instead the proper update comes direct from AT&T via a text message & link, and that should happen automagically. So, if you - like me - heard there was an update and went into your phone settings and forced the download and are now frustrated that the GPS solution is a lie, well, apparently we did it wrong and should just wait for them to give the right thing to us. Maybe the people who said there might be two versions are correct? Do with that what you will, I'd like to talk to AT&T myself about this and ask them what's up."

This sounds like another BS answer from useless Samsung reps. Every time you contact them you get a different answer. This is one is new though.

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Why would they have 2 different released firmware builds with the same name? Makes no sense. And AT&T having those 2 builds on their update servers at the same time, makes even less sense.

If Samsung rep truly said that, it was just to get the requester off the phone or off the chat.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this. What about updating via Kies then? Or is that a 3rd version of the ROM? Again, makes no sense.
