Root Street View For Google Maps Install Fails

I had the same problem, here's the fix that worked for me:

- Uninstall Street View in Titanium Backup
- Go to Google Maps market page OR access in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications; Tap "Uninstall Updates" (OR "Uninstall" if you happen to be running a ROM that pushes Google Apps to /data/)
- REBOOT PHONE
- Go to market, first install Street View
- then go to Google Maps in market, tap install updates (Or install if you uninstalled the entire app in Step 2)

Now it should work!

Worked for me... Thanks! I've been trying for several days w/ no luck.

And also Thanks to gregory1824 for bringing this up, I didn't even know I was missing out on the new features in v1.6! (Pegman is "OK" I guess, but Compass mode is "cool")

uninstall what updates. Not like that's an option in a list of apps so it has to be under something else but no one says what.

And it isn't streetview because that isn't listed anymore under manage apps.

You're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? I can't help you if you don't know how to read.
no i guess you can waste the same amount of time being an asshole as it would have taken you to answer the question, but then you probably don't actually know the answer so I guess this is the best you can do.

I'll keep playing with it. no google maps, no street view. Still won't install.

Still can't figure it out? Read carefully.

Go to Google Maps market page OR access in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications; Tap "Uninstall Updates"

You ask "what updates?" - The updates for Google Maps, as if you follow the directions you are either looking at the Market page for Google Maps, or the Google Maps page in your applications menu.

Either way, the answer to your question was self-evident. Sorry to be a jerk, but it was a REALLY STUPID question. You can only do so much to help people who can't help themselves.

How To Ask Questions the Smart Way

As far as Street View not being visible in the applications page: No shit. That's why I recommend uninstalling using Titanium Backup. But I guess you skipped the first step? Usually it's recommended to FOLLOW STEPS IN ORDER!

Alternatively you can use Root Explorer and delete Street.apk from /system/app. You must be rooted to do either of these, which is why we're in the "All Things Root" section of the forum.

Got any math homework I can do for you now?

EDIT: If you didn't have Street View installed in the first place, then you would skip step 1.

here's a screen shot of both. Where are the words uninstall updates?

did smart guy, it was there BEFORE I used titianium backup to remove it. Thus afterwards it's not and I was making mention of it so I didn't get some stupid comment about not deleting it or not following steps in the right order.

Yeah it's obviously not in that directory because it's deleted per step one. Should I post a screenshot of that too?

Then you just need to tap "uninstall" rather than "uninstall updates".

The reason it would say "uninstall updates" would be if the Maps.apk was in /system/app but updates to the app had been installed in /data/app. You either have never installed updates to Google Maps, previously uninstalled Google Maps and re-installed it so the apk and all of it's data is located in /data/app, or you're running a ROM that pushed Maps.apk into /data/app (such as BBV0.5). I'm leaning toward the latter.

In any case, the procedure is the same, just ignore the "updates" and uninstall the entire Maps app. You will reinstall it after rebooting.

I will edit my OP to make it less confusing, I had only done it on my phone so I only knew what I saw. It's puzzling how you would expect the original directions to account for unknown variables such as what ROM you happen to be running.

yes i already uninstalled google maps before my first post(put it back on to make a point with the screen shots)
And as I stated in my second post even with google maps uninstalled and streetview uninstalled it still won't install streetview so my original assumption was correct, you don't know the answer, but were good at calling me stupid.

Well your communication skills leave a lot to be desired.

Did you reboot your phone after uninstalling Street View & Google Maps? That's a necessary step (hence it being in all caps). Then install Street View, then install Google Maps.

What ROM are you using?

I had the same install problem as the OP and followed publicanimal's instructions to the letter and it worked as advertised. But now when I run Maps I can't see a way to turn on the newly installed street view.

(I also had the same error loading updates to Gmail and followed the example and was successfully able to get it working right too. Thanks publicanimal.)

Now it would be nice to use street view if anyone can point me in the right direction to do that, please.

Enter an address or search for a business, when Maps finds it a bubble will pop up pointing at that place. Tap it and you bring up a menu giving options for directions, navigation etc. On this menu towards the top right you should either see the "pegman" icon (tap for Street View) or a box that brings up more options, one of which will be Street View.

Make sure you test out Compass Mode, it's awesome.
