JH7 Firmware Upgrade Successful Through Kies

I was able to update using Kies through a Windows 7/Mac bootcamp installation. I had touchwiz enabled. It downloaded the update, put the phone in download mode, updated the phone and restarted it. Pretty darn easy.

I had no problems running or installing Kies at all. No compatibility mode or running as admin or anything.

I was also able to successfully update through Kies. I received the MSC.Thunder error message as well. I am running Win 7 64 bit. Here are the steps I took to install.

1) Uninstall Kies (If you are getting the MSC error). If running 64 bit, go to program filesX86 directory, and delete the Samsung Kies directory, as it doesn't delete the directory entirely when you uninstall.
2) Re-Install Kies.
3) On the Phone, set it to use touchwiz, disable any autokill you may have with task killer, set the USB settings to Kies. Restart the phone.
4)Start Kies, then when phone restarts, connect. After that, the drivers started installing, and Kies recognized my phone. Immediately, and message came up saying an update was available for my phone. Just follow the prompts.

You are my effin hero. lol

I dl the ota update on my (rooted/modded) phone yesterday and hardly had time see how I felt about it before my own tinkering left me with a brick and a day with Odin 3 and recovering 200 apps.

I've not been able to get Kies to work since the day I bought the phone.
This thread got Kies working and the new update back on.

This is my first Android product and I have to day I'm digging the community. Thanks guys!!

My phone rooted, lag fix.. will it install update? heard so many phone brick and want to make sure...

My GPS is working fine and just want to keep the phone update with latest firmware..

Thanks

rooted yes - some claim it took the root access away (not a big deal IMO) - Lag fix, not so sure about - I suggest disabling the lag fix first.

@randy_c I bricked my phone by my own doing. The ota update (prior to brick) went smooth as butter on my OCLF/Clockwork/titanium modded Captivate...I mean like butter smooth.

Maybe it took a few hours to creep in and I just thought my trying to install Cognition was the culprit?

Does Android work that way- things can be ok at first and take a little and deteriorate leading to big trouble?

Not necessarily - if you are working with the stock UI, there aren't many things that go wrong "after the fact." Once you starting tinkering with custom roms, you are messing with file structure which can lead to malfunction - same with any OS.

I did not have any issues with running Designgears Cognition and flashing back to stock - the only issues I ever really ran into when flashing ROMs was the i9000 ones..

_______________
For those of you that have not been able to successfully upgrade to the OTA update released this week, download Kies version 1.5.3 (latest version)

http://down.kr.samsungmobile.com/uploadimg/service/support/download/anycall/sw/Samsung KiesSetup.exe

Easiest way for me to do this was to uninstall the current version of Kies - For some reason the update (when you open Kies you will be prompted that an update is available (to 1.5.3)) would not install fully

Once your phone is recognized, it will say a firmware upgrade is available - follow the prompts and enjoy your upgrade firmware! Make sure your battery is near fully charged or you may get a message saying to charge before it can update.

My phone was unable to communicate to the AT&T servers to download the ota updates - I am now successfully upgraded to JH7!

Also, the LBS menu is not available by pressing the usual number sequence - use LauncherPro and create an Activities shortcut - delete GPS data before you do your first GPS test.

btw- I am not responsible for anything bad that may occur :)

Thanks for this. I'm one of the people who can't connect to the server for an update so I tried this method. Worked perfectly.
For what it's worth I tried the Navigate app on my way home tonight and it tracked spot-on. It's always been hit-or-miss so who knows what it will do tomorrow. Thanks again.

Sorry haven't been able to get on and answer questions/suggestions about your problems - been busy with the family today.

.NET Framework is required if you didn't already have Kies installed - there are numerous posts about using kies properly, and this is one of the caveats of the program.

How I did it:
I was having error after error getting it installed - I ended up uninstalling the current version of Kies that I had installed (1.5.1 I believe) Some have had success getting Kies to do the internal update to 1.5.3 by running as Admin, but I did not..

So once I uninstalled Kies, I did go to Regedit and "find Kies" and removed all instances of "Kies" (note: you will also find "cookies" as well :) )

I then used the provided URL in the OP to reinstall Kies 1.5.3. Once installed, I restarted the PC. I believe I opened Kies first before connecting the phone (I don't have Kies to Autostart either).. with the provided URL, I believe Kies asked me to update, I declined..

IMPORTANT - Before plugging in your phone, make sure you have "device connection guide" at the top right corner - If you do not, you will receive the MSC Thunder error.

I then plugged the phone in and the dialog box came up with the firmware upgrade message.

If you are running Win7 you can try running as Admin or running in Windows Compatibility mode (XP Service Pack 2/3)

I do believe my original problem I had was having kies trying to do the internal update as it would not actually install the downloaded files.. I never had problems with Kies before running that internal update.. which is why I opted to find the 1.5.3 version for installation.

I too have a warranty phone coming in from ATT as I was extremely frustrated with the support from ATT and Samsung - ATT told me to call Samsung, and Samsung told me to call ATT - so after that, I called the warranty department and should have my phone tomorrow. I REALLY wish Samsung would have announced that the firmware upgrade would be available through Kies - but then again, Kies is not exactly official for North America yet is it? I guess it's just one of those things!

Thanks a lot. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling kies method but it did not work for me. Can you please elaborate on "So once I uninstalled Kies, I did go to Regedit and "find Kies" and removed all instances of "Kies" (note: you will also find "cookies" as well :) )" I am using a netbook with win 7 starter OS. What is regedit? I deleted kies folder under c:/program files/Samsung directory before reinstalling kies. Do I need to delete anything else? I spent hours and hours on this today. I want to try again to succeed like others who had the same problem like me. Please help. HELP

Regedit is where your pc stores all of its registry information - In windows 7, go to start menu, and the first item near the windows button is a text box - type in "regedit" in that box - hit enter, Registry editor will open.. Then CTL+F and search for Kies - keep repeating until Kies can no longer be found.

Then install the Kies version provided in the OP. Restart after installation is completed. When you open Kies after reboot, it will ask to update - Click No! Then proceed with plugging in your phone..

Do you have .NET framework installed? Did Kies work prior to this? Are you putting the phone in Kies mode under USB settings before plugging it in?

I deleted Kies (including registry) in order to install the new version, and I am getting a message asking if I "want to completely delete the selected application" and then a UseDLL Failed error when I try to reinstall... any suggestions?

Thanks!

Did you uninstall Kies (from control panel) before going into the registry? Just curious as it doesn't state this :) If you did uninstall from the CP, then go to regedit and delete 'kies', when you try to install the new version it asks "If you want to completely delete the selected application?"

look in c:\program files\kies as well and delete whatever is there too..

It sounds like a registry error to me - I use CCleaner to do some registry cleaning - You can also try doing that as well.. But let me know exactly how you got to this point. Thanks.

Good morning fisherman! I deleted by using the Kies self delete option. I also deleted the Samsung software registry entries and the folder under "programs"... should I delete ALL of the registry entries related to Samsung? If I do a registry search for "kies", all I get are two hits under "cookies", but there is no specific mention of kies... should I delete? I did use CC do clean, but still having the issue. Thanks!

Is there any other way to access the LBS menu besides using LauncherPro and creating an Activities shortcut ?

SGS Tools, free from the market, will get you into the LBS settings.

The strange thing is, I don't see any settings that have changed from before I installed the update. GPS seems to lock faster, but I'm not convinced it's because of the update. Only time will tell.

Thanks fisherman! You were right! I looked again at my registry and found some additional entries. Reinstalled Kies, upgraded phone without a hitch, and GPS still blows  Hopefully the rumor floating around stating that this update didn't include the true GPS fix is true.

'MSC.Thunder.UI;component/controls/exceptionpopup.xaml'.

its really frustrating cuz i would like to get it working :(

Thanks for information. I was finally able to get Kies to work again after several weeks of it not connecting to my phone. I followed your instructions, even though I installed the OTA last week via AT&T. Note, the OTA changes the USB Kies option to read "Kies (Firmware update)". Not sure if this wording change has any significance??

Hi: Thanks. I will try this when i get home from work today. I don't know if i have .NET framework installed. Kies always worked for me. It always recognized my phone when i plug it in. I always change it to TW launcher and i have samsung kies selected under USB settings. I am using windows 7 starter OS on my netbook. I will do the regedit and follow your instructions and see what happens. I am dying to get the update through this route because i lost all hope with at&t OTA path :)..thanks a lot for your help

ok sounds good - it seems like most of the problems are with the registry.. Hopefully Kies can update seamlessly on its own next time :)

Just one final question. After i uninstall, clean registry and re-install kies. Do i need to download drivers before i connect my phone? Do i need to start kies first and then connect my phone with touchwiz interface and usb setting in samsung kies? Thanks

The phone drivers should already be installed - if you've used Kies previously and it recognized your phone, you should not have to reinstall drivers..

I started Kies first, made sure the "device connection guide" was at the top right corner, then connected the phone..
