JH7 Firmware Upgrade Successful Through Kies

The phone drivers should already be installed - if you've used Kies previously and it recognized your phone, you should not have to reinstall drivers..

I started Kies first, made sure the "device connection guide" was at the top right corner, then connected the phone..

Interestingly, my experience later today at home on an XP machine was slightly different than earlier at work on a Win 7 machine. I followed the same steps, uninstalling, removing Kies folder, editing the registry, reinstalling Kies, and then rebooting. However, when I first plugged my phone in and selected the Kies (Firmware update) option, the MTP app did not start and Kies did not see the phone. I had to reboot the phone to get MTP to start at which point Kies did connect. Not sure why the different behavior?

The Kies file link provided by the OP provided me with the first version of the software that communicates with my phone on a consistent basis.

- I made sure that any previous version of Kies was gone
- Assured that previous Kies folders were empty
- Searched my registry for the string \kies and deleted all instances
- Installed Kies_1.5.3.10083_66.exe
- Fired up Kies
- Placed USB phone setting in Kies mode
- Rebooted phone (just felt like it)
- Assured phone remained in Kies mode
- Connected phone to PC via USB cable
- Watched while drivers were installed
- Gasped in amazement when Kies and my phone introduced themselves to one another
- Sync'd my Outlook calendar entries with phone (contacts had already been dealt with via a workaround)

Thanks again, OP.

Looks like it is working. WHen i connected the phone it had less than 25% battery. Received a message that said.the device trying to upgrade does not have enough battery. charge and upgrade. how much power should i have..:) thanks for all your help..you are genius..

I can't believe this software. I was finally able to get Kies installed and connected once at work earlier today and then once at home this afternoon using the instructions above. Now, when I try to re-connect to the same phone a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ...... time, nothing! The "Connecting the Device - please wait" message goes on and on forever! I cannot believe how bad written this program is. This is exactly what happened before where I could once connect but then never again?? I've tried all combinations; 1) plug phone in and then start Kies, 2) start Kies and then plug phone in, 3: try different USB ports, ..... Also, Kies will not auto start when I plug the phone in, even though I have that option set in Kies.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Frustrated!

Are you using Touchwiz and have the phone in "samsung kies" mode under usb settings?

I did all the steps you advised. It worked perfect. THanks a lot. My phone had 30% battery level so it is not proceeding with the update. How much battery power do i need to have? It is kind of strange..

I was at 50% and got the error - but I just happen to have a spare fully charged battery and replaced it to continue update.. not sure what the limit is percentage wise. I'm glad to hear it is working! Any idea on what the culprit was?

Just saw this on the Samsung.com support website Samsung - click on Software - Looks like there is a Kies available now :) I'm two steps ahead now.. not sure if I want to install it

UPDATE:
I had issues with using the "Kies Mini" program.. spent the last 2 hours trying to get it to work..(Kept crashing on me) I'm sticking with the UK version of Kies for now..

In that case, let me charge it completely and do the upgrade. I hope it wont through the error message when the battery level is 75% :) i think there were two culprits..the registry entries and last time when it asked me to update the kies for the second time, i went ahead and updated it. this time i followed all your steps one by one..it seems to be working so far. I will reserve my big thanks until i successfully get JH7 :) THanks a lot once again

Are you using Touchwiz and have the phone in "samsung kies" mode under usb settings?

If Touchwiz is the default AT&T Captivate launcher, then yes. Also, I have the USB setting to "Ask on connection". When I plug in the phone I select the "Kies (Firmware update)" option. There are only three options after installing the OTA update, the Kies option above, "Media Player", and "Mass Storage". Kies must be seeing the phone because if I select the mass storage option, for example, Kies says to switch to the Kies option.

The phone is indicating the MTP application, and the USB plug splash screen shows with the connected dots scrolling from left to right.

Changing the USB to "Kies (Firmware update)" rather than "Ask on connection" does not fix the problem.

OK I figured it out...

I was having this problem as well (it would just stay on "Connecting to Device").

Do all the steps others suggested (even removing the program files/Samsung directory after uninstalling Kies).

Again do the steps suggested: regedit.exe, Ctrl-F, find "Kies", delete registry entries, F3 (Find next), repeat.. (don't delete the word "cooKIES").

More steps if you use LauncherPro, etc. - after you switch back to TouchWiz UI, reboot your phone!

The version I reinstalled came from the United Kingdom Samsung website support page for Captivate. The download was way faster than OP's link.

If it's stuck on Connecting to Device, then here is how I got it to work:
1. Quit Kies. Reboot your computer - it will help your installation get all settled and happy.
2. Go to your phone Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> USB Settings -> Ask on Connection
3. Plug your phone in.. choose Samsung Kies... but don't open Kies in Windows yet.
4. It should say "Initializing" on your phone
5. It should eventually say "Connected".. some Autoplay stuff might come up in windows...ignore it.
6. When your phone says Connected, wait a little while, then open Kies.
7. Ignore the Kies software update
8. It should finally connect with your phone and then tell you about the firmware update (JH7)
9. Go through the steps
10. When your phone reboots, the Galaxy S logo will be there for a while. Don't freak out, just be patient.

So pay attention to the order of #1-6.. let Windows get comfortable with the device you plugged in before opening Kies.

Tell me if this helped or not. I am running Windows 7, 64-bit.

I will give that a try, but I can't understand why a piece of software would work once and then not ever again?? What you describe is the way it worked this morning on the Win 7 machine - Win 7 had to reinstall the drivers, then I started Kies and it worked (I didn't try it a 2nd time, however). That did not happen on my XP machine later in the afternoon, but I was still able to connect one time, then never after that.

Last week I found myself in the bucket of those whose phones would get to 50% and fail. I really haven't been to upset about it. Today I was able to update to JH7 using Kies. I then proceeded to test my GPS to see if it either fixed it or enhanced it. I regret to state that I now find myself in the bucket of those who have updated to JH7 and do not have a working GPS.

I figured it wouldn't fix it as I have read many forum posts that claim there was never an actual GPS fix in this release. I honestly can't say either way, but the results I'm seeing tell me either there is no GPS fix in this update or I have a hardware issue.

Did you delete GPS data (from LBS test menu) before trying to get a fix? I suggest going outside for a clear view of the sky as well for your first gps test too.. I tried by my window and waited 5 minutes.. I went outside and the first lock took only 20 seconds. After the first lock, I get a lock in under 10 seconds.. Supposedly there is another update for the GPS - the error seems to be with the drivers for the Broadcom chip in our phones

Not really sure on this..Are you rooted or anything? I'm assuming you are referring to the part when it is downloading the files (binary, etc)?

I am rooted, yes its the part when its downloading the binary files. Its not doing anything to the phone yet while its downloading so i can't figure out why its stopping..

After the update i went outside for the initial lock. It took about 10 seconds to get an accurate lock. I could see significant improvement in gps performance and the choppy TW interface has improved. YouTube widget looks new. Media scanning is a lot faster. I hope it works for everyone. I hope they will make all upcoming updates easy to install. Gosh I can't go back to that back and forth phone calls between at&t and Samsung.
