xScope, a multitouch pinch zoom browser

9/29 Patch #2
Fixed swipe notification bar bug. Please be sure to enable that.
Added two settings to enable:
1. Clicking an active tab to close it
2. Clicking address bar to directly go to google QSB
3. Enable typing in an HTML file on sdcard to be as homepage
Several other small fixes too.

Thanks! Those are great fixes.

This question is bigger than xScope.

I believe the world is built upon one simple principle: there is no free-lunch or it won't last long. Being said that, I also believe that the world rewards people who work hard and have ingenuity and are willing to satisfy other people's need, because there are more rational and respectful customers than others. Those customers also should be rewarded by having better exclusive services. If you see the comments of paid version, they are mostly constructive. I am into my 40s and I consider the market is more like a mirror. Comments are the reflection of the people posting.

If you don't get it. You don't get it. Peace.

xScope,

Is there some reason you are not answering my question about what exactly the trial version is?

Just look at market comments and other threads, I'm not the only one who doesn't get it. If the goal is to really only have a pay version, that's fine, just say so.

xScope, I think he wants to know if the trial version means it will expire at some point, or if its just a free alternative to the full product with less features.

Which I believe the answer is the latter. Its just a stripped down version with the "Trial Version" watermark.

He wasn't trying to debate the advantages and fallacies of paid vs free apps :)

Sprintfun, thanks for helping clear that up.

And xScope, you must have mis-understood me because I don't understand why you'd reply like that towards me.

As Sprintfun said, I (and I think the negative comment people) just want to know what I'm getting into with the trial version.

Will it fully function forever? Typically a "trial" would be something that expires. Are there features missing? Etc.

I just want to know so that I can make an informed decision as to whether I should
1) Continue using the trial
2) Upgrade to the pay
3) Uninstall

You are free to distribute the app in whatever form you feel will generate you the most rewards (whether it be revenue or otherwise).

As a consumer, I feel that the way in which you are "selling" the app should be more clearly defined though.

Sorry I did misunderstand your original question. Please forgive me on this. Too emotional I guess after I poured too much into this app.

The trial version is the same as paid and it will not expire forever. Only exception is the watermark.

So, am I just unable to find it, or can we no longer set the user agent by website?

I like the new version and liked the layout enough that I purchased the full version, but I really can't use it as much as I'd like without that feature which I considered crucial in the old version.

Great job - just get that feature back ASAP ;)

No problem. That's all I wanted to know.

Perhaps you might want to not call it "Trial" then.

Good luck with your app. It's certainly a solid option for people to use as their default browser.

Need a little help:

I updated without noticing that this was an update to the free trial of the new version. So when I tried to click the original xScope link on my home screen it told me the app has been deleted. Then I found the "free trial" app and tried to open that and it said that I had to first uninstall xScope. But it was already gone from downloaded app list. So uninstalled the "free trial" program. Now I can't seem to get it back.

I wanted to at least get xScope back, so I downloaded and installed the .apk from xscope.net.

So now i have the old version back on my phone. So how do I get the free trial back??

nice browser but I would never pay for a web browser.

I really don't understand this. Just like I don't understand people who wouldn't pay for a home replacement like Launcher Pro.

People will pay two, three dollars or even lots more for a game or utility that they might spend a tiny fraction of their time on the phone using. But a web browser, probably the most used application on the phone, isn't worth paying for?

If you wouldn't pay for this web browser because it doesn't offer anything compelling for you, okay, I understand that. But no web browser, no matter what?

Just seems silly to me. A guy asked if Launcher Pro was worth the few bucks in a thread the other day. Geez, it's a $550 phone. You can't spend $3 for the app that is open every single time you touch the phone?

But on the flip side, I don't have to pay for a different browser on my computer which is much more powerful and can do more things, so why should I on my phone?

I purchased xScope not because I particularly care either way, but because I enjoy the product and have no problem supporting the dev for his hard work. I don't really care if its a program or game or music or whatever, but that's generally how I look at things.

It's a completely different kind of development environment on a computer, though.

Sales channels, exposure, potential market, distribution medium, are all completely different. Firefox and Thunderbird are free, but Mozilla generated $80m in revenue last year. The revenue channels that Mozilla uses aren't nearly as prevalent in the app world. Even if they were there (which, keep in mind, they aren't yet), the potential customer base is only a tiny fraction of what it is on the PC, so the dollar potential is MUCH smaller.

Mozilla doesn't develop for free. It just makes its money in other available channels. Since those monetization opportunities aren't there on the app market, developers primarily make money by charging a small amount for their app.

Seems like some of us have expended more than $3.00 worth of energy discussing whether xScope is worth $3.00 :)

xScope, I for one appreciate your attitude and care in developing this app. You can't make everyone happy! I am even older than you and I make my living developing and supporting software (for astronomy, for the last 12 years). Keeping up with technology is a giant task, and I have dug into Android development somewhat (one of the devs on cSipSimple). I know it was a large learning curve, and I also know how much time you must have spent making xScope so smooth (not to mention your skills!!!).

Well worth $3.00! And I can't understand people who agonize over days and bunches of messages to decide whether to spend the price of half a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of beer.

5. If downloaded file is an APK file, it will pops up a dialog for user to select 'Open'.

This is on top priority list :D along with theme support

Unfortunately the trial is halted. I received too many hassle emails for not giving is free, and I treat them as customer and replied every single email. That's a huge burden (spent whole morning just replying people's emails).
It is 2 AM here and I am still replying emails now.
