JH7 Firmware Upgrade Successful Through Kies

After the update i went outside for the initial lock. It took about 10 seconds to get an accurate lock. I could see significant improvement in gps performance and the choppy TW interface has improved. YouTube widget looks new. Media scanning is a lot faster. I hope it works for everyone. I hope they will make all upcoming updates easy to install. Gosh I can't go back to that back and forth phone calls between at&t and Samsung.

Ok, now I am glad to see it is working! We are supposed to see another gps update, as there is an issue with the driver, but JH7 shows an improvement for most. (edit) You can tell by using Google maps (that there is still an issue) -your location should be found almost instantly.

Just saw this on the Samsung.com support website Samsung - click on Software - Looks like there is a Kies available now :) I'm two steps ahead now.. not sure if I want to install it

UPDATE:
I had issues with using the "Kies Mini" program.. spent the last 2 hours trying to get it to work..(Kept crashing on me) I'm sticking with the UK version of Kies for now..

Did the Samsung download form work for you? It never works for me, on different computers on different browsers. Once I fill out all the info for the phone, it goes to that form that you linked, then clicking on "Find It" doesn't do anything.

Did you delete GPS data (from LBS test menu) before trying to get a fix? I suggest going outside for a clear view of the sky as well for your first gps test too.. I tried by my window and waited 5 minutes.. I went outside and the first lock took only 20 seconds. After the first lock, I get a lock in under 10 seconds.. Supposedly there is another update for the GPS - the error seems to be with the drivers for the Broadcom chip in our phones

Good suggestions. I'll need to find a thread that talks about how to get to that menu now that they've disabled the previous method.

I will give that a try, but I can't understand why a piece of software would work once and then not ever again?? What you describe is the way it worked this morning on the Win 7 machine - Win 7 had to reinstall the drivers, then I started Kies and it worked (I didn't try it a 2nd time, however). That did not happen on my XP machine later in the afternoon, but I was still able to connect one time, then never after that.

Well first thing this morning at the office (Win 7 machine) I tried to re-connect the phone with Kies - no luck! This was after uninstalling and then reinstalling following the instructions earlier yesterday. This behavior is now becoming very predictable, i.e., after initial Kies installation you can connect the first time but then never again. This is the exact same behavior I had a home last night with an XP machine. I think I am just going to give up with Kies.

I am extremely disappointed with Samsung on this software!

After doing some checks on different forums, I have found a method to allow for Kies connection, one-time only.

1) unplug phone
2) open Kies and select "Driver Recovery"
3) set phone USB to the Kies option
4) plug in phone. At this point Windows (7 in this case) will reinstall the drivers (Samsung Android USB Composite Devices and Samsung Android USB Modem)
5) after completion of the driver installation, Kies will connect to the phone.

However, if you unplug the phone and then plug it back in, Kies will not connect again. I am wondering if the recent OTA firmware update has an AT&T kill option to prevent continued Kies use except for firmware updates!

Ok folks with issues with the big kies program try Kies Mini. All this does is check for firmware upgrades and if one is available then updates the phone.

First thing if you are running launcher pro then you need to switch back to touchwiz and reboot the phone. Use home switcher app from the market set touchwiz to your default and then reboot the phone. Make sure you have kies mini running before you plug your phone in. Plug the phone in making sure kies mode is selected.

Hi,

My rooted phone also did a partial upgrade, I believe:

firmware: 2.1 update1
baseband: I897UCJH7
kernel : 2.6.29 jetaek.lee@sep-11 #2
Build number: Eclair

So then I installed Kies per the instructions here (did not have it installed prior).

Kies recognized my phone, in Kies mode etc.

Edit: Running win 7 64 bit, opened Kies as Admin.

But when I go to firmware upgrade (manually) I get the following screen:
Picasa Web Albums - Fahd.Reyaz - Pictures

What it says there is:
Model Name: SGH-I897
Current Version: PDA: JF6/Phone JH7
This device's version cannot be updated

And the update box is greyed out.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I was also able to successfully update through Kies. I received the MSC.Thunder error message as well. I am running Win 7 64 bit. Here are the steps I took to install.

1) Uninstall Kies (If you are getting the MSC error). If running 64 bit, go to program filesX86 directory, and delete the Samsung Kies directory, as it doesn't delete the directory entirely when you uninstall.
2) Re-Install Kies.
3) On the Phone, set it to use touchwiz, disable any autokill you may have with task killer, set the USB settings to Kies. Restart the phone.
4)Start Kies, then when phone restarts, connect. After that, the drivers started installing, and Kies recognized my phone. Immediately, and message came up saying an update was available for my phone. Just follow the prompts.
What is "Touchwiz" ???

OK, got the phone updated to 7 from 6. Interesting ride.

SGH-I897 AT&T
Kies 1.5.3.10093 installed on Win7 64 machine (recently upgraded from 74)

Tried the upgrade phone to 7.
Failed as in all above posts.
Uninstalled Kies as described above.
Installed NET 4.0
Re-installed 74 as that was all i had.
Just for grins, I tried upgrading phone to 7 with old version of Kies.
IT WORKED. Done.
I just got done upgrading Kies to 93. Will see if that is a mistake.

Whew!

Ok... finally got the phone connected to Kies! (tired another pc running XP, could not connect with my windows 7) Now I have another problem! Once i got the phone connected to Kies, it popped up a message saying, to update the firmware click here. I clicked on it and followed the steps, with backing up my contacts etc. Got to the point where it says " Downloading from server... Do not remove the mobile device from your PC while downloading." Towards the bottom right above the status bar, it says downloading Binary files. I have had it connected for over 45 minutes with out the status bar moving or any other progress what so ever! Is anyone else having issues with this? Any suggestions as to what i can do?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I believe I had this issue as well - I think I canceled the download, rebooted the PC and phone and tried again - Also try putting the phone in "ask on connection" too (usb settings). This helps me for some reason to connect to Kies more than once - not sure if this is an issue with Kies or the phone or combination of the two..

This is exactly the problem I am having. Basically a partially upgraded phone. Phone shows JH7, CSC and PDA show JF6.

Will not upgrade for anything.
