Root Is there a difference from applying a ROM from the SD card vs flashing?

Is there a difference between flashing a ROM, say DE03 with recovery 3.1.1, versus applying the ROM directly from SD Card?

So far I have flashed the Moment by adding the DE03 3.1.1 Recovery ROM from the laptop's Samsung Moment binary folder. I wonder if I copied that to the root of the SD card, can I just flash it there anytime I want?

The reason I want to do this is because it seems that it is suggested to flash back to stock prior to trying out a new ROM, and it would be faster to just load the ROM from SD card than hooking it up to the computer everytime to do this.

First off there is a difference between flashing and installing. Flashing refers to overwriting to a flash rom (read only memory) chip. Its an all at once deal whereas installing you can do incrementally. You can't flash a .tar file from the sdcard. The recovery only knows how to install from a .zip file or in the case of a kernel can simply overwrite the zImage file in the /system folder. There are stock ROM's that will take the phone back to 'almost stock' but can't access the flash memory chip on the phone. This chip can only be written to in download mode via the updater software (more specifically via the usb bus which has direct access to the chip) which ONLY reads .tar files (actually special .tar files compressed with the retar-moment.c tar software). The only way to get to 100% stock 2.1 is to flash the official DE03.tar that comes with the sprint updater.

Was there a stock recovery console that was available with the stock Sprint ROM? I never tried the recovery console until I flashed to the stock with recovery, so I am wondering if there was a recovery console with 2.1 stock ROM or not.

Putting this: Login on your phone via SWUpgrade (should) put your phone to complete stock. No root. No possibility of changing roms and theming.

Things such as the file I linked to and SDX custom recovery and such, can only be applied via the SWUpdater. ROMs, themes, and random little fixes can be applied by putting onto your SD card, booting into recovery and applying the zip.

edit: just realized that you might not be able to access the file I linked to unless youre a member there too. Might be a good idea to sign up though, since over half of the website is composed of Moment related items. Yet another good source of info and people willing to help you.

http://shop.sprint.com/en/software_downloads/pda_smartphone/samsung_moment.shtml This link is straight from sprint, but I believe it updates you from 2.1 DE03 to 2.1 DI03 which has a few, but not many "fixes".
