computer wont boot ):

I have an Acer t135 all stock. I had XP and xubuntu both on one hard drive, and this morning I get a message on xubuntu to download some updates. I download and install them. Then it says to reboot. So I reboot then while its turning on it says Acer aspire like it normally does and after that it says something about grub and a bunch of numbers. At that moment I new I was screwd. So I put in the recovery CDs my computer came with to reinstall XP. It all goes well until the end when it says remove system CD and press ok to configure. So I remove the CD and press ok. The computer then reboots on its own and keeps turning on and off by itself enlessly. so I turn it off by holding the power button until it shuts down. I press the power button and it keeps turning on and off again. I do get the option to press del to enter setup and f12 to boot from specific location though. What do you guys think I can do now? Any help would be much appreciated.

during the restore process did it erase the HDD and re-partition it?
im going to assume since you are using linux you know about partitions on your HDD.
i would suggest formatting and re-partitioning your HDD and then trying to run the recovery disc again.
you can use a windows disc or your linux install disc to do the formatting if you need to.
if its a software problem (which it sounds like based on the update) then this should clean anything off the drive that could possibly be making issues for you.

I'm having a hard time installing xubuntu, now how exactly would I do this through the recovery CDs

hard time installing xubuntu... ?
recovery cds can be very different depending on the computer manufacture and i havent had an acer before so i have no idea what you have to work with exactly.

what step are you having trouble with for the linux install?
im going to do my best to help you here but im at work so im doing it in my head and its been a few months since i did a ubuntu install.

Partitioning the hard drive. It says that XP is installed but I can't access it, also when I put 10 gigs to xubuntu and put forward I got an error message, so I put try again and waited for about an hour and nothing, so I put quit. Ill try it again though

if you can try to delete all the partitions first before making new ones.
im assuming that since you tried to use the restore disc you have given up trying to keep files that were on this computer.

Music and pics are backed up so I don't think i have to worry about that. Also I'm trying to install xubuntu again but this time I chose to let it delete XP and give it the whole hard drive. so I hope it works this time now.

Okay so how to monitor just turned off by itself. The monitor is on but it acts as if the computer were off. With a yellow light showing, should I let the computer keep running? this has never happened be 4

usually it will restart on its own when its done installing an OS.
try moving the mouse and typing a little on the keyboard to wake up the screen. also feel for the HDD vibration or listen for fans to see if its still running.

if its still running i would wait a little while longer.
it it has turned off go ahead and turn it on to see what happens.

I wonder if you HDD is failing on you. When was the last time you also flashed your BIOS?

ya, the HDD could be failing. i usually replace HDDs in my computers every 1-4 years depending on use.
browsing the net = 4 years
downloading torrents/playing games = 1 year

ok xubuntu is working now, but no XP. Is there anyway to install XP without getting rid of Xubuntu?

not that i know of

install windows, (making sure to create a small partition for windows to live in. about 15-30 gigs is good.)
next install linux
allowing linux to partition the remainder of the HDD and keep windows on the HDD.

linux allows dual-booting between OS's but windows does not so linux needs to be installed last.

NOTE: the 15-30 gigs would be enough for windows and very basic programs such as firefox, microsoft office, and a game or 2)
choose a larger size if you think you need it.

usually i have a windows partition of 30 gigs, a programs partition of 100 gigs, and a "other" (music/movies/pictures/documents) partition of at least 300 gigs.

of course the sizes of programs and "other" partitions will depend on you drastically and the "other" partition can be shared between linux and windows.

so basically i put in the recovery disc, and install windows again right? also i think i will do this saturday, because i wont have time during the week to do this. i shouldnt have problems installing windows like before again will i?

yup

but really installing an update should not have done nearly this much damage to your system. i would still lean towards getting a new HDD before reinstalling windows.
